... and you have Tampa Bay # 2 ... great!!! We are not in 90's - this is a new (cap) era where you need at least 3 solid lines!!! Right now we have only 1 scoring lines...

I would rather have 2 real 2nd liners... but that's me

*edit* It's not even worth it

A common theme among the Red Wings and ESPECIALLY this board is loyalty. Sundin has played for one team, where in a city he is for all intensive purposes a god, what makes you think he would not be bolting back to Toronto?

Because wherever he goes, if he doesn't win the Cup, he'll know that going back to Toronto means he'll never win one period. I don't think this rental player bulls*** is going to happen every year with Sundin, because teams will eventually see that it's too big a risk trading away young players for a guy who won't be back with their team next year. Leaving Toronto permanently is his only good chance to win the Cup.

The logic some people have here is amazing.

You would rather have a bunch of second-liners who can't be counted on to consistently finish a play, isntead of lines including Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Hossa, Holmstrom, and Cleary?

I know it would suck to see any of the players go, but really people, take off the homer glasses. Hossa is a no-brainer.

This news cycle is just bizarre. First, all signs point to Detroit closing the deal, then, Montreal?

Looks like we'll have to wait a couple more days for anythign to finalize. I just hope Holland has a backup plan.

We are deeper than TB in regards to defense and forwards.

TB has Vinny, Prospal, St.Louis, Richards and Boyle. After that, there's a huge dropoff.

The Wings have Zetts, Dats, Hossa (if they make the deal), Homer, Lidstrom, Rafalski, Kronwall.

We have 3 allstars and 1 very good player (homer) to make up our top 2 lines.

And next year we could have Brunnstrom and Dick Axelsson. Both guys could net over 20 goals on the top 2 lines. And we might even be able to resign Cleary.

So losing Hudler and Filpulla would not hurt us nearly as much as people think.

I'm in total agreement with Dallas27 - it's a no brainer getting someone of Hossa's calibre for two unproven NHLers.

And remember, in this cap era, there are very few teams that have an abundance of scoring depth up front.

Having 4 very, very good players sprinkled on your top two is more than enough.

If we did trade Huds and Filp these would be our potential lines for Game 1 of the playoffs:

Cleary-Dats-Homer

Sammy-Zetts-Hossa

Maltby-Drapes-Drake

Kopecky-Franzen-Donwey/McCarty(who knows?)

That looks just as good or better than the top 12 skaters on any team in the West.

I agree, but I think that Homer might be bumped down to the second line. They'd toy around with who Hossa plays best with, but I'm betting he'd fit in perfectly as a finisher for Datsyuk. I also think hope that Franzen would be put on the second line, not Sammy, but we all know how Babcock refuses to punish Samuellson for playing like crap. I'd also like to see Kopecky drop out of the lineup in favor of McCarty. Right now Kopecky doesn't offer much.

And frankly, going into the playoffs being able to rely on a supporting cast of Quincey, Meech, Ellis, McCarty would make Detroit the clear favorite for the Cup once things get really heated.

All of this hinges on picking up Hossa. Other players would improve Detroit, sure, but only Hossa would prove to be the cement this team needs to push us over the edge.

Take out Sammy from you 2nd line...

I see your point - Hossa is great player - but are we going to be able to resign Zetterberg next year (Holland is going to offer him a contract this summer).

We need some upgrade on DEF also...

Could someone explain all the facebook stuff thats been going on? I've read quirps about it here and there, but I don't want to scan over 985423984 pages of material to find the origins.

Basically someone had befriended "Filpulla" as a joke, not thinking anythign of it, and then he noticed that a status update listed him as being traded to Atlanta.

So most people were skeptical about it. But as time went on, there were some strange events. The comments board was taken down ebcause it was full of people asking about the trade, the status was changed. The pictures on there seemed to be personal photos, and of the many friends, most were family and minor league hockey players. So we basically concluded tha tif it was a fake, it would have to be the most obsessive, creepy thing a fan could do. All the signs pointed to it being either legit or so well done to the point of being stalker-ish. And then I guess someone asked Flip and he said it wasn't his. I don't knwo if there's any other evidence, but all those coincidences still seem bizarre to me.

I can't see anyone else feeding the puck to Hossa on the wing. I also don't see Homer being able to keep up with Hossa and Dats, that would be one quick and shifty line. In my perfect world we somehow get Feds as well, Feds / Dats / Hossa. I think that line would be producing a lot of goals and points.

Those coincidences aren't bizarre at all, IMO. The person behind the account probably realized he was getting in over his head and freaked out, hence things disappearing.

Could be, except that it's not really "getting in over his head." It's just a bunch of posters. he could've just left it and never gone back to it. But yeah, I guess it was a fake, but it was a pretty darn good one.

As for the facebook things, its been my experience with my friends in the OHL that the players are the last the know about themselves being traded, ergo their facebook status usually is updates after the trade is posted live on actual tracking sites. I remember when Tom Kane was traded away, i posted "sorry to see go" on his wall before he even knew he was traded.... which is why i 'd at taking the facebook angle for truth without considering it wasn't on any other news source.

I agree. It would be tricky to get Zetts and Hossa under the cap. That's why I think it's essential to find out how ready guys like Ericsson, Quincy and Kindl are. If 2 of them or even 1 can step up to replace Lilja we'll be good.

And if we did get Hossa I think he and Zetts would be perfect. Hossa has put up some very good goal totals but he still seems to be more of a passer than finisher. If anything he and Zetts are very similar in that they will pass and shoot.

The weirdest thing about it all is why would someone go through such an elaborate hoax for a fringe player?

Not to say there couldn't be some obsessed Wing nut that took a liking to Filpulla.

But the page certainly seemed to be real when you looked at all the circumstantial evidence that was on it (pics, friends, associates, etc).

Whatever the case, it helped kill the day yesterday for me so I'll always be grateful. ;)

I feel sorry for those that have read 20+ pages of gibberish that could've been summed up in a page.

41 actually... :)
