From TSN and Douchebag Mackenzie:

The Marian Hossa Sweepstakes are on hold – for now.

Amid published reports out of Montreal, that the Canadiens have ordered equipment for Hossa in the event they secure his rights, and out of Ottawa, where the Senators are apparently in a holding pattern on Hossa, the focus in Atlanta today is strictly on the Thrashers' game tonight against Carolina.

Sources say Atlanta GM-head coach Don Waddell is in full coach mode today and won't be working the phones or advancing any trade talk for the talented winger who is likely to be dealt before Tuesday's NHL trade deadline.

But sources also told TSN that before Waddell resumes trade talk on Hossa, he wants to take one final stab at seeing if he can sign the winger to a contract extension. That effort, the source said, would likely take place on Friday. If it's unsuccessful, and Hossa himself has been quoted as saying it's a longshot he would re-sign in Atlanta before July 1, then Waddell will attempt to close a deal for Hossa this weekend.

Teams reportedly interested in Hossa include Montreal, Ottawa, New Jersey, Detroit and San Jose, amongst others.

This is updating up to Page 37.... that still gives you guys a few pages of meaningless opinions w/ few facts included.

For the record, and for the 500th time it's been menioned in this thread....

Hossa is not a rental! Although nothing is set in stone, it's also been proven he is affordable for the Wings. Atl wants players to replace him right now, so they are not looking for picks or future prospects, it will be a player for player(s) trade.

YoungGuns1340 - Opens thread with news article from Spectors of trade rumors for Hossa

Ducks are mentioned as being interested, Duck Guy posts the following cap info for the Ducks.

Expected '07-08 Upper Limit Charge 50,193,061

Projected Payroll Room 3,879,439

Expected '08-09 Upper Limit Charge 49,180,000

Filppula is mentioned regularly as trade bait for hossa before any of the Facebook 2008 Drama.

Cleary, Hudler, and Sammy (of course) are also regularly mentioned.

Viperar -

"Hossa told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution last week the chances of him re-signing before the trade deadline are "very slim."

And that increases the likelihood that Hossa, due to be an unrestricted free agent this summer, will be moved before Feb. 26.

Waddell has received calls from at least 10 teams, including the Stars, Canadiens, Bruins, Senators, Rangers, Ducks, Red Wings and Sharks, according to the Sun."

As per ESPN insider, dated Feb 19th.

YoungGuns1340 -

Detroit will have absolutely no problem having Hossa on the books next season, as Hanks contract wont kick in til the season after that. 09/10 is what Im more worried about. And hopefully, they can offer Cleary a longer term contract (5 years?) at a cheaper price (2.5?), which in reality is a deal Cleary might take, as thats a lot of security for such an inconsistent player as Cleary. Now, hopefully when/if Detroit re-signs their players, they'll re-sign them all to at least 2 year deals (except Chelios), so they can calculate how much money theyll have booked for 09/10.

A look at 08/09

Cap: ~54M

Hudler(1.1) - Hank(2.65) - Hossa (7)

Cleary(2.5) - Datsyuk(6.7) - Homer (2.25)

Kopecky (.5)- Franzen (.94) - Sammy (1.2)

Maltby(.88)- Draper(1.5) - Dmac? (.5)

Downey (.55)

Lidstrom (7.4) - Ericsson (.65)

Raffi (6) - Kronner (3)

Lebda (.65) - Cheli (.8)

Quincey (.65)

Osgood (1.4)

Howard (.8)

Total: ~49.9M

09/10

Estimated cap ~56M

Hudler(2.5) - Hank(7) - Hossa (7)

Cleary(2.5) - Datsyuk(6.7) - Homer (2.25)

Abdelkader?(.6) - Kopecky (.7) - UFA (1.2)

Maltby(.88) - Draper(1.5)- Dmac?(.5)

Downey (.55)

Lidstrom (7.4) - Ericsson (.65)

Raffi (6) - Kronner (3)

Lebda (.65) - Quincey (.65)

UFA/prospect (.65)

Osgood (1.4)

Howard (.8)

Cap: 55.1 - If the Wings can talk Hudler, wholl be an RFA if hes still around, into taking a one year deal at maybe 1.8M for the 09/10 season and wait to see what they can give him after Lidstroms salary comes off the books in 10/11, then we'd be looking at a around 54.5M payroll, which would still give Detroit some space under the cap in 09/10.

It is doable.

(Scroll down to the Feb 17th article, it was what was current at the time)

It is debated if Hossa could get 8mil open market, but no one really points at a team.

-----------------------

The Falcolner (1:05am)-

Greetings Wings fans. I grew up in Michigan and still root for the Wings in the Western Conference but Atlanta is my home now and I write a Thrashers blog. A lot of you have come over to my blog tonight and I've been reading this thread. A couple of comments:

1) Hossa turned down a solid offer from Atlanta because he wants to win a Stanley Cup and realistically that is not going to happen in Atlanta in the next 4 years. If he were traded to Detroit I think the odds of him signing a long term deal are VERY good. However, he will expect probably $8 million a year.

2) If you have not seen Hossa play much he can bring some power forward moves the Wings have lacked since Shanahan and Martin Lapionte left. He can get the puck in the corner and just bull doze his way to the net. He is also extremely strong in the corners and along the boards with the puck. It is nearly impossible to take the puck away from him along the wall.

3) He is extremely solid defensively. He back checks harder than most offensive forwards and he is the Thrashers best PK forwards (the opposition almost never scores a PP goal when he is on the ice). He's quiet and won't do much media stuff but he is no prima donna and will be very well liked by his team mates if he goes to the Wings.

Somewhere along the line his account (Facebook Fill's) has been hidden. It will reappear in the morning for a few hours, and has ever since been hidden.

Let's take a look at this. The Cap has been raising by about 3m per season steadily. The cap figure is 54m for next season. So we'll go assuming a 09-10 cap figure of 55.5; this would be half of what the increase has been to date.

So here's some projections based on that figure.

This is the Wings' contract situation for next season:

FORWARDS

Datsyuk $6.7m

Zetterberg $2.65m

Holmstrom $2.25m

Draper $1.583m

Samuelsson $1.2m

Hudler $1.015m

Franzen $942k

Maltby $883k

Kopecky $500k

Ellis $475k

Filppula RFA

Cleary UFA

Drake UFA

Downey UFA

Hartigan UFA

DEFENSEMEN

Lidstrom $7.45m

Rafalski $6m

Kronwall $3m

Lebda $650k

Meech $483k

Quincey RFA

Chelios UFA

Lilja UFA

GOALTENDERS

Osgood $1.417m

Howard RFA

Hasek UFA

That's 10-5-1 at a price of $37,190,000. This leaves just shy of $17m to finish out the roster if the Wings spend to the cap.

Now let's fill in some numbers. Cleary should be getting $2.25m, Filppula should be seeing maybe $1.5m, Drake and Downey will either resign or be replaced for less than $600k...so we'll use that for their roster spots. Chelios and Lilja can be marked down for $1.25m. Howard will likely be up next year at a maximum cost of $900k, so we'll use that.

We've just bumped the payroll to $45,640,000 and filled the roster out to 14-7-2. So we still have 9m to play with for next season. Looking to the 09-10 season, we'll say Z gets bumped to 7m even, a raise of $4.35m. Samuelsson, Hudler, Franzen, Kopecky, and Ellis are free agents after next season. So let's mark them down for 1.5m, 1.45m, 1m, 650k, and 550k for a total of 4.95m, a bump of 818k from their current salaries. Payroll is now at $50,820,000. We have 3.18m free if you assume that the cap is at 54m in 09-10.

So let's look at a Hossa deal.

He'll likely cost at most 7m to sign, so we need to shave off about 2.32m in 09-10 salary from my example just to fit him under the 54m cap. The Thrashers would want a couple of roster players, so this can be done in one deal. Filppula and Samuelsson would combine for $3m. So if the Wings can trade Flip/Sammy plus a pick/prospect for Hossa and as part of the deal sign Hossa to a deal of 7m or less, there is NO reason not to do it.

Bring on Hossa!

I just got done reading the Thrashers forums just to get a perspective from their fans.

1. They fully expect DW to screw this trade up

2. They seem to want a trade with SJ more than anyone, mentioning setoguchi, cheechoo, marleau...the usuals

3. Mention of detroit is active, some idiot posted he wanted huds flip and kronner. I laughed but the more serious guys posted flip + an up and coming d-man would suffice.

From their points, i think giving up flip + one of our young D men would be completely acceptable. Hell throw in a draft pick if we re-sign hossa.

------------------------

YoungGuns1340-

Its doubtful Anaheim is in the running to get Hossa. Montreal, San Jose, and Detroit can all afford to re-sign Hossa. Anaheim (and Ottawa) would have to move players and/or risk losing other players to offer sheets if they re-signed Hossa.

Ottawa has nearly 40M tied up for next year. With an estimated cap of about 54M, that leaves 14M for Ottawa to re-sign Hossa (7M), Commodore, Kelly, and Meszaros, find a replacement for Redden (who they dont want to re-sign) and possibly re-sign Stillman. Even assuming they trade Emery, its still not enough.

As for Anaheim, they've got cap problems of their own. In order for them to have room to re-sign Hossa, theyd have to hope that Niedermayer retires, replace all of Niedermayer, Selanne and Weight from within, hope that Hiller (and particularly) Perry sign reasonable contracts, and probably trade Marchant (good luck) to booot.

-----------------------------

eva unit zero -

Hossa has historically been a better playoff performer than Datsyuk...he's bigger and stronger, and uses his size more in respect to physical defenders.

Hossa has 13-23-36 in 55 games.

Datsyuk has 11-20-31 in 60 games.

And this is including his 16 points in 18 games that proved he's a playoff performer..yet only ties Hossa's best performance of 16 points in 18 games. Hmm.

-----------------------------

Viperar - "Right now, I've got nothing that's imminent," Burke said Wednesday. "Usually by this time, you've gone past concepts and you're down to names and picks. And I'm not there yet with anybody. So, either I'm slow, or it's a slow development market. The fact that so many of these deadline deals went awry last year has probably calmed things down a bit."

-----------------------------

YoungGuns1340 -

You know what, just so everyone is clear on this Anaheim bit, ill post the numbers

Nidermayer - 6.75

Pronger - 6.25

Schneider - 5.65

Beauchemin - 1.65

ODonell - 1.25

Huskins - .625

Dipenta - UFA

Bertuzzi - 4

Marchant - 2.5

Neidermayer - 2

Pahlsson - 1.4

Perry - RFA

Getzlaf - 5.35

Kunitz - 3.75

Ryan - 800k

Carter - RFA

Parros - 550k

May - 600k

Moen - 900k

Sutherby - 800

Total without Hiller/Perry/Carter/Dipenta = 50.825M

Viperar -

I just got done reading the Thrashers forums just to get a perspective from their fans.

1. They fully expect DW to screw this trade up

2. They seem to want a trade with SJ more than anyone, mentioning setoguchi, cheechoo, marleau...the usuals

3. Mention of detroit is active, some idiot posted he wanted huds flip and kronner. I laughed but the more serious guys posted flip + an up and coming d-man would suffice.

From their points, i think giving up flip + one of our young D men would be completely acceptable. Hell throw in a draft pick if we re-sign hossa.

eva unit zero -

Hossa has historically been a better playoff performer than Datsyuk...he's bigger and stronger, and uses his size more in respect to physical defenders.

Hossa has 13-23-36 in 55 games.

Datsyuk has 11-20-31 in 60 games.

And this is including his 16 points in 18 games that proved he's a playoff performer..yet only ties Hossa's best performance of 16 points in 18 games. Hmm.

Viperar - "Right now, I've got nothing that's imminent," Burke said Wednesday. "Usually by this time, you've gone past concepts and you're down to names and picks. And I'm not there yet with anybody. So, either I'm slow, or it's a slow development market. The fact that so many of these deadline deals went awry last year has probably calmed things down a bit."

jim3033 - Posts this, thought I believe Ansar Khan was working off of old info, and was talking about Hossa as a rental (WHICH HE ISN'T).

Most complied research ever. Should be edited into the first post so people can just skip 43 pages of bs =D

I concede to the fact that I am fighting a lost cause in this thread, so I'm out, we will just have to wait and see until Tuesday.

Yeah,we just have to wait and see what happens.

No need to argue too much about this.

But I can tell you this much - Things will go ugly in LGW if we don't land Hossa.

And that thread will have 100 pages,if this doesn't make it.

I just claimed the movie rights. Chuck Norris is starring as me.

Well that leaves only Seagal to play me.

Great job CaliWingsNut

Here is yet another reiteration that the Wingsgate 08' is bogus

Mlive

"Myth: Valtteri Filppula said on his Facebook page that he'd been traded from Detroit to Atlanta in a deal for Marian Hossa.

Truth: It was a fake. Filppula has contacted the Red Wings front office to alert them that somebody is using his name on Facebook. Actually, it's fairly common for people to do that, which is pretty scary. More than one of the Thrashers has said people have used their names online, and had conversations with friends and families posing as them. Hey, that's a story."

Once again proving Facebook is retarded and that Harvard alumni aren't superior beings bound to run the world. (Burke and the creator of Facebook went to Harvard)

Damn.... the forum won't let me do quick edits to my post... it's too big lol!

But then again.... is the creator liable for what others do on a free site? I'm sure he's made a pretty penny of it too.

***SPOILER***

Hossa is the killer.

Ahhh, (doing my best Bear Grylls voice) but in the wild you can't count on sheer size, speed, agility, dominance and a wicked snap shot. Sometimes you have to think about what keeps you going. And for me that's my wife and kid.

I don't care if you stayed in a hotel Bear, you still eat raw goat ********, drink your own urine and jump into bogs with dead deer bits.
