Red Wings Assistant General Manager Jim Nill just told me that both Brian Rafalski and Dominik Hasek have been put on IR. Forward Mark Hartigan and defenseman Jonathan Ericsson have been called up from Grand rapids, and are already on their way to Detroit. Nill also confirmed that both Hartigan and Ericsson will practice with the Red Wings tomorrow before leaving for Calgary.

Just cuz he's injured now doesn't mean he can't get injured again

That's not the point of making the statement "better now than April". What he means is "better to have suffered this exact specific injury NOW rather than in the first round of the playoffs."

Of course he could get hurt again. (obvious)

Better now than in April...

I wonder if anybody will surge and maybe take the Norris lead away from Nick in the next 3 weeks, or at least make a case for themselves.

ehh...probably not. Lids has an astronomical point lead amongst dmen and nobody is even close to touching him on +/- except Rafalski and he's not going to get it.

Hell, the more I look at it, if Lids doesn't play the rest of the year he might still win the Norris. Only Gonchar and Markov are even in striking distance points wise and you know they aren't going to get any Norris love.

Next to Rafalski, only Phaneuf could be said to be having a great year. 13 goals, 44 points, +6, 118 pims.

Well, I think I answered my own question.

Let's here it for Nick's SIXTH NORRIS WIN!

This is a bit more encouraging from the Detroit News:

Here's the story I just filed moments ago...Lidstrom looks good and seems definite about the 3 week timeframe.

Nicklas Lidstrom will be out of the Red Wings line up for approximately three weeks with a sprained right knee. Lidstrom was hit hard into the boards by Colorado's Ian Laperriere in the first period and suffered the injury when he fell awkwardly onto the ice. Baseline tests thus far have ruled out a concussion, said Lidstrom, who still has one more such test Thursday. The Wings are awaiting one more set of tests concerning the knee which were done Wednesday morning, but three weeks seems like a definite timeframe. Wings doctors don't expect to find anything more than a sprained ligament. "I was hoping for something shorter but right now they're saying three weeks," said Lidstrom, who was wearing a brace on the knee. "They think it's just a sprain. It's a little sore walking around. "It'll be different (not playing). I won't be making the road trips, sitting at home and watching, and that'll be different." Lidstrom didn't think Laperriere's hit was dirty, although Laperriere did follow through with an elbow. With Lidstrom out, and the status of defenseman Brian Rafalski (groin) and Niklas Kronwall (clavicle) both day to day, coach Mike Babcock said the Wings have called up defenseman Jonathan Ericsson from Grand Rapids. Dominik Hasek (hip flexor) remained off the ice and Babcock said there's no timetable on a return for Hasek until the goalie gets on the ice. Dallas Drake was given the day off to spend with his family, and Babcock gave Pavel Datsyuk a day off for rest. Babcock also also told Henrik Zetterberg to stay away Wednesday, but Zetterberg came to the rink anyway. "Sometimes they just don't listen," Babcock said.

Psh...this is exactly what Bettman needs to give his favorite team's main D-man Neidermeyer the Norris...

Well ADVERSITY time is here!! On the good side, we only play 6 games in the next 3 weeks. @Calgary, @ Vancouver, @ Edmonton, SanJose, @ Buffalo, St Louis. After that we hit the central division full tilt, which begins March 9th, with a home date with Nashville!! This is a great chance to see our young guns!! I'm looking forward to the next 6 games or so!! I would be willing to bet Cleary may be back for the Nashville game, by then it would have been over a month, where he could play with a cage, but we'll see!! Oh by the way there is no Panic button on my keyboard!! LETS GO BOYS!!!

I remember a few years back now when Matt changed the front page to say Detroit Griffins ... this injured D is going to be the Detroit Griffins and I hope that like last time, we continue to roll. Should be good to see how Quincey and Ericsson handle the pressure.

i've looked at TWO threads today, both of which you seem to try and derail with useless retorts aimed at flaming a response.

so, i'm not gonna call you an ass or anything. i will just say, PLEASE stop with the anti-LGW user semantics and stick to hockey. please. we don't need people cutting others down for how nervous they are about how long nick will be out, or making comments about the fact that our best player night in and night out could get injured again. hell the guy could take a puck to the dome tomorrow that ends his career. but do we say that? NO. NO we don't. its unnecessary.

note: any responses you leave from here on out will go unread and without reponse. just wanted to say that we come here for comradery and positive sentiments and nothing else.

as to nicks absence for 3 weeks, it could be worse. it does suck, especially with kronner and raffi sitting. but it does give the youngins a chance to show us something (meech is a prime example).

Way to stay positive, people.

I feel the same way. We'll get through it, and we need this exercise in adversity before the playoffs. The season has been too easy otherwise, and recent experience has shown that too much ease in the regular season does not translate into success in the playoffs (especially in the first round).

That cheating *&&^% won't come near the Norris. Electively sitting out half the year and then strolling in mid-season when he's bored? That would be the end all for hockey for me - noone who pulls that stunt should be elegible for trophies. He wouldn't be able to catch up points wise anyways - just the thought makes me sick though.

Another thing that makes me sick is that this was concocted by the Avalanche. Since they can't beat us - why not just take our our best player for awhile? What a bunch of whining *&&^%. They have little shot to make the playoffs and I'm going to be ever so happy to rub it in to their fans out here.... :furious:

I want them to be the 8th seed so I can say the Wings record against the Avs this year was 8-0.

Assuming Nick misses three weeks from today, he will miss eight games.

That projects him to 68 points at his current pace over the 74 games he'd play. Sergei Gonchar is the only defenseman scoring well enough to pass him; Gonchar over 82 games is on pace to score 71 points.

Nick still will almost certainly win the Norris. There are no defensemen out there who are anywhere near his defensive game that ALSO have matched his offensive output this season. The closest to that is Rafalski...and he plays with Nick Lidstrom. Redden is the only defenseman other than those two with more than 30 points and better than a +10, and Raffi is way ahead of Redden in both categories.
