wingnut22 81 Report post Posted February 26, 2008 (edited) I am actually happy we didnt do anything more than we did. I would have been kind fo mad if we would have given up young guys on our roster, or tons of prospects/picks. You cant give away the future, to maybe get far this year. I am beyond happy that Ken Holland is the GM and not any of the "experts" on this board!!!!! Go Wings!!!! Edited February 27, 2008 by wingnut22
arnoldbuck 0 Report post Posted February 26, 2008 I'll admit I'm disappointed that we arent a little richer in the scoring department, but ... another way of looking at this additional cap room we still have. ... Does anyone know what players are Summer 2008 Free Agents? Obviously we will still have to re-sign Cleary, and hold room for Z, but what guys can we put our cash towards this next summer. ... (that is After we win the cup)

bellarina 1 Report post Posted February 26, 2008 Wings who else!!! Our team will soon be the dominating force again. Our 2 new additions will pay off huge in the playoffs. We needed toughness so they added Stuart and D-Mac. No more liberties on our skilled guys. What we didn't need was Hossa to break up our chemistry. Alot of teams don't realize that these huge additions take time to gel and means a lot of shuffling. What Holland did today was Fantastic. All he did was slightly tinker with our defence. What we gained was more puck possession and a big body to help fill the void left by Jiri. Many teams lost alot today and some teams gained. Today the wings gained and gave up very little(if anything).

awingsincebirth 0 Report post Posted February 26, 2008 Okay, hopefully this is the last time I have to write this. Should we have gotten a Prospal or a Fedorov?? Well, considering what they went for, we probably should have. With that said, people are absolutely losing their minds out of pure hatred for Ken Holland, who everyone knows (Wings fans or not) is one of the best GMs in the league, unquestionabley. There is on thread where one veteran member actually goes on a huge rant, then says that this is his last post, and that's that, he left, never to return I suppose. Could we have used an addition to secondary scoring, especially given the cap space we had, and the fact that Kenny all but promised one right from the start? Yes, and I'm a little pissed at Kenny for doing what he did. Is the current secondary scoring absolutely inept and a guarantee to flop in the playoffs? NO. Flip will need to step up, and we know that Cleary will bring it. Huds will need to step up, and I'm quite confident that Franzen will step up. Also, DZH will get over this slump, and get back on track. These guys are very good. The defense will heal up, and return to their spot within the top 2 defenses in the league (Us and you-know-who). We've got TWO good goalies, that is, one to fall back on if the other turns out to be a flop. This is my main point here: Dallas and San Jose had to do what they did in order to get up to the level of US AND ANAHEIM. They've leveled the playing field for sure. However, in no way are they clearly better than they are, as we were obviously superior to them when we were healthy. The West bracket of the playoffs is going to come down to some breaks. If we suffer a couple key injuries, it is very unlikely we will have much success. But, if Anaheim, Dallas, or SanJose suffer a few key injuries, the same goes for them. It's gonna be tight, and I'm excited about it. We need our boys to all step it up, and as Wings fans, I think that we should feel confident that they will. We've seen how this team can play, and how dominant they can be. We've got to get back there. Also, I pretty much guarantee a couple of attacks from pessimists to tell us all how retarded we are, but such is life. Let's Go Wings

The injured stars to come back will be like new additions anyway, and hopefully the likes of Hudler and Filppula will step it up again. Go wings! It's disappointing that we didn't get a blockbuster trade, but people are overreacting WAY too much on here. They're calling for all the management to be fired! Jesus, you'd think Holland did something bad. He DID pick up a physical, solid defenseman. And what do we know about playoff hockey? It's not about goals scored, it's more about how many you allow. You win with goaltending and defense and where I stand, Detroit improved over any other team in the league on defense. Colorado added more, but really, I have doubts over hwo well Salei and Foote will do, Foote especially. So the Wings lost nothing, and gained a solid defenseman? I see nothing wrong with this. Our scoring is still a huge question mark, and should have been addressed, but with strong defense and goaltending, you don't need scoring. All we need is to win a couple 1-0 games and we win the Cup, when you break it down.

The injured stars to come back will be like new additions anyway, and hopefully the likes of Hudler and Filppula will step it up again. Go wings! I'm with you guys. And boy am I glad this is over so now some of the part time fans can go back to watching the Pistons. The Wings are in good shape. Marian Hossa is going to either be a rental player or the Pens will have to pay $6M+ to resign him. We just don't have that kind of cap space. Z could get $8 Mil easily this year. Things are different in the salary cap world. The young (cheap) talented players are MUCH more valuable because you can't fill a team with $6M men. We already have Rafalski, Lids, Dats and Z. There was no way we could afford Hossa, Sundin or Blake regardless of how much some of the people on here were dreaming about them. Kenny did good. He got us a good solid D-man who is big and gritty and most importantly didn't give away our future for a rental. As far as D-Mac, well he cost us almost nothing. If he pans out great, if not then nothing ventured nothing gained. I'm satisfied. Of course I would have liked to get Hossa for a 3rd round pick but I'm realistic too. ashenhigh 9 Report post Posted February 26, 2008 Its going to be one hell of a playoff in the west. Green Wing 26 Report post Posted February 26, 2008 The secondary scoring thing is my only issue too, I thought we'd get someone like Prospal. But I think it's a message to the guys we already have to start delivering. There's no excuses now, they've got to put the puck in the net and prove themselves. It's a great chance for them to have, rather than just being traded away. I hope they take that chance. Tonight would be a nice start

WiNgSowN 0 Report post Posted February 26, 2008 We got Stuart I'm happy Arguably our biggest acquisition is going to be Cleary He will be back for the playoffs as will all the other injured but Cleary is a perfect type player for the playoffs. He makes everybody else better. He can play on the powerplay and penalty kill. He provides scoring, passing, grit, and leadership. In the end after we get everybody back we will be fine. our goal tending is already top-notch, with Stuart now 4 top-notch D-men reliable 3rd pairing with Chelios and Lebda/Lilja they won't have to log as many minutes as they do now, and enough scoring to win Lord's Stanley. Opie 308 Report post Posted February 26, 2008 I root for the guys wearing the winged wheel, regardless if I love them as people or players, or if I loathed them before the wheel was put on their chest. Grittzkey 1 Report post Posted February 26, 2008 Defensive Injurys isnt only hurting our defence, but its hurting our offense because we can keep the puck in the other teams zone.. Im still very optimistic that we will still make a good run. Dallas still had to dump a great pker in halpern and a solid player in Jokinen.. AND sj got a defensmen who isnt nearly as good as people make him out to be, and SJ looses a forward.. so they dont scare me 1 bit. Anaheim is the only team in the west that can beat us, when we got lids/raffi back. and we've proven we could beat them.
