Let's face it people. As much as everyone would have liked the addition of a second liner like Prospal or Richards, the terms of the deal or the personnel were just not right for Holland. But, I think the main reason why Holland stood pat on that issue is because this team is based on solid defense and goaltending. We are a dominating team when we can posses the puck and play our style of hockey and that will not change just because we didn't get some guy that MIGHT help us on offense IF he gels with the team.

I have great confidence that when all our guys come back from injuries, you will all see this dominating team once again. Cleary is going to be the difference in the playoffs and our defense and goaltending will be stellar.

Here is to a long playoff run!! GO WINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Overly optimistic people are also annoying.

I think we still have a really good shot at the cup this year. We're way better than dallas and the avs, and we're still better. At most we're even. anahiem is still our top competitor, but stuat should definietly help there. I am disappointed at not getting a new forward, but our offense is still up to par. Better than Anaheim's I would say.

With all the talk on here lately. you would think the Wings are in last place. We have the same team that started 41-10-4, so obviously we have the personel to get the job done. Stuart was a good pickup, as right now our D-liners are depleted. Once everyone is healthy, he'll fit nicely into our top 4 and add some physicallity to the blue line.

I think people forget what a good prospect Stuart was. He might come in here with a new attitude ,like Dan Cleary ,and become the Norris candidate everyone thought he would be coming out of junior. I'm a little disappointed we didnt get a top 6 forward but we do have McCarty coming back and maybe the boost of confidence that not getting that forward gives Hudler and Filpulla will boost their production.

You know, we just don't know what other teams were asking the Wings for in exchange for some of the "sexy" names that were available today, like Hossa, Foote and yes even Sergei and Marty. Just because Sergei went to the Caps for a no-name prospect and Marty went to Ottawa for a fourth-round draft pick doesn't mean the Wings could have had them for the same. Teams are out to make the best deal possible - they may have been asking for roster players from the Wings, because they know we have a lot of injuries right now and while I wouldn't exactly say we are "desperate" (it's not like any of our injured guys are done for the season), the perception is still, the Wings need some NHL-experienced bodies, especially defencemen. Holland is not going to let the team get raped for anything.

Besides, once everyone comes back from their injuries, this is pretty much the same team that went all the way to the Western Conference finals and lost to the eventual Cup winners. There is no reason to think they can't at least get that far again this year.

As for all the Holland bashing, well I just simply don't get that. Holland is widely regarded as one of the best GM's in all of sports, not just hockey. Because he didn't make the blockbuster deal he's getting skewered, just as he would if we gave up Flip, Hudler and/or Kronwall for Hossa. With some people there's just no satisfying them.

The last time the Wings did a blockbuster trade deadline deal it didn't turn out so well, anyway - 1999, when we got Cheli, Ulf Samuelsson and Wendell Clark. Cheli's still here and has turned out to be a good acquisition, but the other two are long gone and didn't help us do anything in the playoffs that year. And then there's last year when we got Bertuzzi (not quite a blockbuster, but a big-name player). We gave up Shawn Matthias, whom many thought was a middling prospect, at best. Well, Bert bolted during the summer when he became UFA and Matthias is proving to be better than anticipated. And we got...nothing. No Matthias, no Bert. So it's only natural to be a little cautious when dealing your prospects.

Will the Wings win the Cup this year with the current roster? Who knows. So much can still happen between now and then. But when they get their injured guys back and start playing like they did before all the injuries, they are like a force of nature that cannot be stopped and are the best team in the league, bar none. If they can stay healthy, they are pretty much unbeatable. There isn't one team that scares me.

I'll be more than happy to cook up a big pot of crow for all the naysayers and bandwagon jumpers and deliver it personally to the rocks these people have crawled back under when the Wings at least make it to the WCF. If they can win the WCF, they'll win the Cup. There is no team in the East that can beat the Wings.

I am actually happy we didnt do anything more than we did. I would have been kind fo mad if we would have given up young guys on our roster, or tons of prospects/picks. You cant give away the future, to maybe get far this year. I am beyond happy that Ken Holland is the GM and not any of the "experts" on this board!!!!!

Go Wings!!!!

I just looked at your avatar for the first time. Then looked up to read maltbys lips saying "Oh my god" lol

If we would have added Hossa, it wouldn't just be a matter of fitting him in with everyone else. It would also be us giving up a lot of young talent that could really help us. Look at Ericsson tonight. And it's not like we didn't do ANYTHING. We fixed our defense issue, and signed McCarty, a grinder with a big heart. He will look out for his teammates and put fans in the seats. When we get all of our Wings back, we are gonna dominate the world.

Sometimes, I feel like there are very few people out there who can say "I love my whole team. Unconditionally."

Everyone is just down on the Wings right now, and I think it is because we jumped at the start so fast that everyone was expecting us to keep it up. You cant keep up that breakneck pace without risking injury and the like which we have now. When we get to the playoffs *fingers crossed* we will be healthy, and will be able to dominate like before after all the rest from injury time off. Do not be faint of heart my Wing fans, we are in it for the long haul.

Props. You've got the right idea. I don't understand those who seem to feel that their negativity will produce something. Short of assaulting the players or forcing performance-enhancing substances upon them, the only way that we can affect how the Wings play is via our support or lack thereof. If one is a fan, one will support the team.

The Wings went into the 2003 playoffs facing zero challenges along the way. When they got there, and problems occurred, they hadn't the mental toughness or physical grit to get themselves out of it. Losing streaks suck, but they let your team know where its weaknesses are and hopefully, how to improve on them. Right now, if feels crappy--come playoff time we'll have fixed these problems (and gotten healthy).
