schulzte 18 Report post Posted March 4, 2008 NHL average attendance per game in 2007-08: 17,147 NBA average attendance per game in 2007-08: 17,141 Hockey is winning by 6 fans per game! (Winter Classic probably helped) Also, we rag on Phoenix and Nashville for low attendance, but the NBA has 6 teams under 14,000 in attendance per game, while the NHL only has one. Somehow we never hear about those numbers, just that the NHL is struggling in Southern markets so much.

It's all the negative reporting in and around hockey. First you have you hockey haters. Secondly you have traditionalist hockey fans who hate newbies. I'm from New Mexico and have never gotten to go to the Joe yet but I hope to this November after that they can get a new arena (I feel inclined to state that I am only kidding about getting a new arena before November as some moron will probably put up a post stating that it would take longer than Novmeber to get a new arena). schulzte 18 Report post Posted March 4, 2008 (edited) My level of interest in the Detroit Pistons is somewhere in between Canadian Women's Curling Championships and Senior Golf (the curling on the high end). Here a plan for a New Red Wings Arena to check out if anyone is interested. Edited March 4, 2008 by schulzte

There was talk last year before the playoffs of a new arena. They've bought the property for it by Comerica park but I think they were counting on the Wings to win the cup. They have to make a decision by 2009 when the lease at the Joe expires. An outdoor rink by the arena would be really cool! It's that or the Joe gets renovated. I hope it's a new arena. Kp-Wings 3 Report post Posted March 4, 2008 There's an obvious reason for that... basketball sucks! I don't know... maybe it's because I've never played it as a kid, or was ever any good at it, but I loathe the sport like you wouldn't believe. It's only exiting in the last final minutes; the rest is just trivial details. I mean, didn't the Pistons blow a 24 point lead or something the other day? That's what I heard anyways. It doesn't matter, since basketball still, for some reason, get's better national media coverage. I don't see what these networks like ESPN and such see in it, because I think it's one of the most boring sports around.
CrossCheck24 2 Report post Posted March 4, 2008 I wouldn't pay $20 to go see game 7 of the NBA finals if my 'favorite' team was playing. The only reason they are still around is the fact that the players are in with the pop culture scene, which keeping the league afloat. If Lebron did not hang out with P-didy or Jay-Z or whoever then that league would turn into the CBA real quick.

kylee 727 Report post Posted March 4, 2008 i love threads like this cause last year and this year all i hear from certain detroit sports talk show (singular) that say that Hockey is irrelevant in this city and around the US. i think hockey might be on the up, honestly. US hockey is really starting to show itself here with great young players and now the numbers prove people care about the NHL. if the NY Islanders are the only team below 14 K per game, thats a great sign. attendence up, Wings are selling out again, Versus ratings up. but i thought the nhl was dead rob parker and mark wilson
sverige 0 Report post Posted March 4, 2008 Hey, I'm happy that the NHL has better attendance than the NBA but I will not tolerate any Pistons bashing. I support ALL Detroit sports, Lions included *sobs*. Sadly this in NO WAY means hockey is more popular than basketball. Pro basketball may not be well attended but lets not kid ourselves, this month is March Madness, all we will be hearing about is basketball, basketball and more basketball. Everybody and their mom follows college basketball. I was even on HFboards and just found out that Canada of all places knows about March Madness. Why Canada cares about US college basketball I don't understand, but that just goes to show you how big it is.

Seriously, I sound like somebody who doesn't care about Red Wings history, but I do, just the past is the past and you really can't remake something that amazing. Like I am going to compare it to something incredibly stupid ...(please don't comment on this comparison unless you aren't chirping me)... Well it's like them (whoever) making the movie The Sandlot, which happened to be one of the greatest movies of all time, and then making another one, The Sandlot 2, which happened to suck and completely ruined the image in my mind that I had of the legendary Sandlot movie. If anybody understands what I'm saying, awesome, if they don't I understand 100%.
