Stuart taking wait and see approach

"I think I'm hoping things go well and that maybe I find a spot here," he said. "I can see myself enjoying it here and wanting to stay."

Good boy.

Although, even if he didn't want to play in Detroit it's not like he would admit it to the media.

Brad Stuart

Talks briefly about his future here.

Thanks for posting this.

Doesn't this ring 'de ja vu' to anyone else? I recall Bertuzzi saying the same things.

I'd love to have Stuart here but I don't think the numbers add up. If we were to keep him, Lilja would be gone for sure and so might Chelios. Or Lebda might get dealt.

I think Babs wants Ericsson here full time next year and we'll lose Meech and Quincy to waivers.

The Wings would probably prefer to re-up Cleary and re-sign the other RFA's while keeping some space for another dman/winger rental at the deadline (heck, it'll probably be Stuart again ;))

I hope he stays. The Wings definitely need his size and physical play on the blueline.

Realistically though, can the Wings afford to spend that on defense? I think Stuart made 3.5 mill this year.

Exactly. He could probably get between $4-5M on the open market. While I'd love to have him for the reasons you described, I'd rather spend it on a power forward and go with what we have on the backend.

P.S. If we were going to spend that kind of money on Stuart I'd rather have Markov.

No prob, I agree with you. I think we need Stuart because of his physical play more so than say Lilja and Lebda. But at the same time 3.5 is a lot and we have Ericsson and Chelios if he returns which he probably will then I don't see Stuart staying especially if we keep Lebda and/or Lilja.

Well, can Anaheim or San Jose afford him? Anaheim have the big three on defence eating up the cash, and San Jose will make a pitch to sign Campbell I imagine.

And if Stuart wants to play in California, this leaves LA. Does he really want to go back there?

If Stuart can't find a fit in California, which seems likely, then why not Detroit?

I'd like to see him stay as well, but with so much money tied up between Lidstrom and Rafalski, I don't see us affording Stuart.

I know he's the forum's personal whipping boy, but this is why Lilja is a valuable commodity to the team. He's a cheap D-man with size and experience.

If Niedermayer retires for real this summer, I think Anaheim could.

I don't know a lot about their total cap situation, but relatively speaking San Jose hasn't spent much money on their blueline.

Back to my original point. I'd like him to stay here, but could the Wings swing it even if they wanted to?

Really? I'd take Stuart. Bigger. Younger. More offensive upside.

He hasn't thrown the dramatic hits Markov did, but hopefully that will come in time.

I don't think Lilja will accept 1 million, so that money might as well go to a better all around D-man like Stuart.. Tell me if I'm wrong, but he seems to play very well for the Wings right now, good stuff!

If not he can easily be replaced with Ericsson.

This'll all depend on what happens to the cap next year and in negotiations for re-signing our other UFAs-to-be.

That said, Markov is not worth $3.5m. Not in a million years. His physicality last year was limited to the hit he put on Stoll, which somehow convinced everyone that he was an ultra-physical defenseman. He is solid and only makes the occasional mistake, but he is not overly physical, can at times be lazy, and has absolutely no offensive ability. Stuart is bigger, is more physical, can move the puck, and has the ability to produce points.

I will go on the record to say that I was highly impressed by Markov's stickhandling-fest in game six against Anaheim last year. I don't know where on earth that came from.

The only reason I'd rather have Markov is because we could get him much cheaper. I like Stuarts size more but I think Markov is actually more reliable in his own end and both seem to be willing to drop the gloves when needed.

I will be surprised (and very happy) if he stays. Stuart's whole life is in California. He even made the 'sacrifice' to go to the Kings to get out of Boston. The trade with Sturm and another Shark to Boston for Thornton really traumatized Stuart, who thought he would be a Shark forever, I guess.

He knows he's lucky to be a Wing, who wouldn't want to play for Detroit? Dave Lewis even called and told him how fortunate he is. I hope he loves playing in Detroit so much that he is willing to uproot from California and come here for more than the playoffs this season.

I fear Stuie may be a rental and that he will flee back to sunny California if there is any opportunity to do so. Hope I am wrong about that.

let's not all freak out cause he hasn't already signed a 3 year extention in his contract - he's been a Wing for what, a week?

i dont know if i want him to stay or go, he's played two games so...

Markov wanted $4m this year and went to Russia when he didn't get it.

He was, in any event, a completely replaceable part of our team.

I really, really hope he stays. He's a great fit so far.

Honestly I think it all comes down to his wife. Since that is who he constantly talks about. If she will support him and leave sunny Cali to see her man have a chance at winning the Cup, then he'll stay. Otherwise I don't see it happening.

Sunny California. Pffft. I'll take 7 inches of snow we got yesterday/two days ago and the 5-10 we are getting over the weekend.

On a more serious note, if the price is right I hope he stays, when I yell at the tv to knock someone on their ass Stuart answers the call. But if he wants upwards to 5 million forget about it, that can be money spent on Hossa.
