96warrior 11 Report post Posted March 12, 2008 http://redwingscorner.blogspot.com/ Hasek's back is sore, will rest Thursday Dominik Hasek left today's practice early, experiencing soreness in his back. Hasek won't start Thursday's home game against Dallas -- Chris Osgood will -- and coach Mike Babcock said that he didn't know if Hasek will be available for back-up duty or if they'll have to recall Jimmy Howard from Grand Rapids. Hasek said that he might be ready for Thursday's game, if not then he said that he wants to be sure that he's ready for Saturday afternoon. Hasek said that he left the ice early to get some treatment. Babcock said that Hasek will start Saturday's game. The netminder hurt his back in the second period against Nashville, Sunday, in a play that involved Radek Bonk. Also from today's practice ... -- Defenseman Andreas Lilja was home sick. He will not play Thursday night with Brett Lebda skating instead. Lebda was a healthy scratch, Tuesday. "I didn't have to make a decision," said Babcock. -- Valtteri Filppula sat out today's practice to rest his sore thigh. He'll be in the lineup Thursday. -- Mikael Samuelsson had a froggy voice after being cross-checked in the throat by James Wisniewski in last night's game. Samuelsson practiced and is good to go in tomorrow's game.

40#1Fan 0 Report post Posted March 12, 2008 from MLIVE: Update from Wednesday's practice: Dominik Hasek won't start against Dallas Thursday, as originally planned, due to a sore back, coach Mike Babcock said. Hasek left practice early but said it's nothing serious, he just needs a couple of days off. He's hoping to be ready for Saturday's game against Nashville. Chris Osgood will start against the Stars. "My back, I felt it the last few days and it didn't get better, so I decided to leave the ice and get treatment,'' Hasek said. "I don't think it's anything serious. I don't know if I'll be ready for tomorrow, if I won't be I definitely want to be ready for Saturday's game. I just didn't feel well today on the ice.'' Valtteri Filppula was given a day off for "maintenance'' coach Mike Babcock said. Filppula's leg has been sore but Babcock said he will definitely play Thursday. Andreas Lilja, who might have been scratched anyway, missed practice with the flu and won't play tomorrow, as Brett Lebda was scheduled to be back in the lineup anyway. cirov19 1 Report post Posted March 12, 2008 Oh man Hasek.. don't keep this up for the playoffs. Although, it is good to know that when Hasek is injured we will have another solid goalie right there waiting.

haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted March 12, 2008 Maybe this was the plan all along, but I think they need to go back to a more 50/50 split between Hasek and Ozzy, so Osgood will be more ready to go if Hasek goes down in the playoffs.

Exactly. Hopefully Dom gets better soon, but I am really excited that I get to see Ozzie play tomorrow since I'll be at the game.

Yes, I agree. Maybe you need to call up Babcock and tell him yourself! I would hate to have 2 goalies not ready 2 go in the playoffs

HenrikRules40 14 Report post Posted March 12, 2008 lol I bet it was a mistake and they meant to but went instead of was. Oh! Well I hope so because otherwise that makes him sounds like such a sissy! Lilja: I miss my mommy. Babcock: Don't you know you're fighting for a spot on the roster??? Lilja: Yeah but she smells like cookie dough and tucks me in at night. Babcock: I don't think you understand! Nobody even likes you! Lilja: I want my mommy!
puckloo39 5,686 Report post Posted March 12, 2008 (edited) Exactly. Hopefully Dom gets better soon, but I am really excited that I get to see Ozzie play tomorrow since I'll be at the game. HC, you didn't stick a pin in a Dom voodoo doll's back, did you? J/K, you know I am just messing with you!! I am glad Ozzie is going to play for you, of course. Makes getting to go to the game even more special for the world's biggest OZZIE fan! I always am extra-happy on the rare occasion that I get to go to a Wings game and Dom is in net. This ought to be fine, so long as there's nothing really bad wrong with Dom. Ozzie being prepared and all warmed up for the playoffs is a good thing. I am in the minority I am sure, believing in this particular case, a goalie tandem in the playoffs would be just fine. No, it's not normal. But no other team has the luxury that we do, having two #1 goalies. PS - does anyone remember the play where something happened with Bonk on Sunday? I remember Dom getting mowed down behind the net, but was that Bonk collided with Dom? I have it DVR'd, but I am at work. thanks! puckloo39 5,686 Report post Posted March 12, 2008 never mind, it was Dan Hamhuis who collided with Dom behind the net on Sunday. That was what I remembered, not Bonk. Hope it's just soreness and nothing more serious. Stupid Predators... I hates them, I do.

The problem with that is that if Hasek is the guy you view as your #1 (that could change if his body can't hold up for any reason...but sitting out one game doesn't indicate that..just that he's getting a rest) then you have to play him the majority of the time so he's ready to do the same come the playoffs. You can't split time 50/50 and then expect him to jump to full time once the playoffs start.

You can't split time 50/50 and then expect him to jump to full time once the playoffs start. He missed games due to the hip flexor problem in November and February, and now the sore back. When you're talking about a 43 year old goaltender, I think you have to factor in the potential benefits of playing him more than half time versus him wearing down before the playoffs. If it were me, I'd go 50/50 for sure. Hasek's been in a few playoff games in his career, I don't think he needs to start a lot of games running up to the postseason to get momentum or anything. I disagree. If you have those concerns then he's not your starter anymore and you move Ozzy up. We don't know how bad this injury is. It could be a small thing but because of his age and the fact they don't need to win games right now they are resting him. But if he's your starter...then he gets most of the games.
