Chicago Blackhawk defenceman James Wisniewski has received a one-game suspension.

Wisniewski received a match penalty for cross-checking Detroit's Mikael Samuelsson in the face on Tuesday night. The match penalty carried with it an indefinite suspension pending a review by the league.

The incident happened late in the first period of the Red Wings 3-1 win over the Blackhawks.

Wisniewski has six goals and 15 assists with a plus-4 rating over his 57 games this season. The 24-year-old was drafted by the Blackhawks in the 5th round - 156th overall of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.

Wisniewski will miss tonight's game against Carolina.

Hahaha... Good ol' James...

He just wanted to hang out here with his buds... had to think of a way to get out of playing. Canton, Mi in da House!!!

I think that is fair. Mickey and Larry didn't think there should be a suspension at all, or at least that is what they said during the game last night. I'm on the fence about it. One game isn't a big deal, so I think it is fine. I don't think it deserved more than that though.

Fair enough. Samuelsson started it, though. Not like that's an excuse or anything. It has been suggested that by having the ref come in when he did, he lifted Wiz's arms to hit Samuelsson in the throat. I'd have to see it again.

When all is said and done, that was a dangerous thing Wiz did, and he has been punished accordingly.

I'm actually a bit surprised he got a suspension on top of the match penalty, can't say he didn't deserve it, but for all intensive purposes this is a 2 game suspension from a team perspective anyways.

And Woywitka gets squat for the clothesline on Kopecky? Doesn't make sense.

It's because nobody got injured, and because Woywitka has no previous history. If, say, Steve Downie or Chris Simon had done something of that nature instead, the situation would have been different.

It may be wierd coming fron a Detroit fan, but I like him alot. I really think that in the years to come the Hawks will be able to challenge us in the long run. I actually look foward to tight races in the central, but I'm not going to ***** so long as we make the playoffs, which may make me a hyporite.

I love him because he was friends with my sister before he was sent to Chicago... Loved him in the Whalers!

Now she just sees him occasionally when he comes back home to Canton to hang out....

I personally think 1 game is outrageous for that play... Once again horrible use of suspensions by the league office. They blow when it comes to dishing out suspensions. THE END.

You don't think he deserved at least 1 game? They were mixing it up but only one guy jammed his stick into the other guy's face. And it was no accidental kind of play. He didn't control his temper nor did he control where he crossed check Sammy in the jaw/neck.

Me thinks your position has something to do with your personal connection to Wiz. Because clearly, its a suspendable offense anytime you cross check somebody in the head or neck.

PS: I like Wiz. He had a fantastic scrap about a week ago I think against a bigger, tougher opponent (can't remember who) but I thought while watching it that this guy is freaking awesome. Exactly the type of solid guy who sticks up for his mates and can throw down despite not being a really big guy.

PPS: I really don't like Samuellson. So that's just to clarify that i'm not being a homer (not that i've ever been called one anyway) just pointing out.

My stance is.... Pronger, UNPROVOKED, took off holmers head... 1 Game... This was provoked Sammy awaked the beast and got taught a lesson in instigating.

Holmers missed more games than Pronger missed... Sammy missed what, A shift?

I don't remember did Pronger get a match penalty also?

First, while Sammuelsson did turn around and jab Weisnewski, it was Weisnewski who belted him in the back of the head first, a normal scrum, not a big deal. I don't believe Weisnewski meant to get him in the throat, but he does need to be more careful about that sort of thing. It's one thing to hit someone with your glove, another to use a crosscheck.

Holmstrom and Samuelsson missed about the same amount of time, both incidents were within the last five minutes of a period, both players left to the locker room and returned at the start of the following period.

Pronger didn't get the match penalty, Rob Nediermeyer did. When the league reviewed the match penalty they made the decision that the wrong guy was assessed the match and gave Pronger the suspension to rectify the mistake.

The Wotywika play wasn't a match penalty so the league wouldn't have automatcically reviewed the play. The Wings didn't ask the league to, the Blues certainly wouldn't ask the league to, so the league probably didn't even look at it.

The biggest thing that I can't understand is how Weisnewski gets the one-game for this one incident and, yet, we watch TooToo do worse on a continual basis and the league says, "hey, no big deal, no suspension needed here."

Thats what i was trying to get at just with the wrong examples because i really don't care about all that stuff other than there is no rhyme or reason for the tools in the head offices suspension hand downs.

If you want to fight the other side... how many games the McClemman or whatever his name was for his stick work to the gut of Franzen get? 5 I think... yet a stick to the throat is 1... rock on NHL!

Pronger provided several 1-game suspensions in a matter of a single playoff run spanning what 2months...if I recall... all of which seems worse than James scuff.

Oh well thankfully he will be back after only 1 game.

I was honestly surprised that it was only a one-game suspension, though I didn't see the hit so I can't speak from a firsthand view of it. I gathered that since it was a cross check up high, it would have been "more suspendable", but I guess not.

He fought Douglas Murray of San Jose. The guy is about 4 inches taller than Wiz. Wiz is awesome.

The league is certainly pretty inconsistent with suspensions and fines and things like that. I think some rule changes/upheavals are necessary in this league. Scoring is down (or so they say), and now we have to minimize goaltender equipment or make the nets bigger. Maybe Bettman's the problem, not the goalies. Which really doesn't have a whole lot to do with the suspensions debate going on here, but it is mildly relevant.

Your point is well taken. However I think it clear that the league f***ed up the Pronger call. So instead of looking at it like Pronger only got 1 so Wiz shouldn't have gotten anything. Instead we all know Pronger should've gotten more.

The league missing the boat on Pronger doesn't mean they didn't get it right with Wiz. It just means the league still has a problem suspending marquee players, especially come playoff time.

Its a joke, we all know its a joke. But the mistake was made with the Pronger suspension, not the Wiz suspension. On Wiz, they definitely got it right. No major injury, everybody is fine but in the end, it was a high shot to the face/neck area with your stick. That should be a minimum 1 game suspension every time.

They seem to keep missing the Pronger boat... how many times can a player be mistakenly "overlooked" for a suspension before you start see it become the norm and not longer just an overlook or a f*** up.

Kudos to Prongs for yet again today escaping any hard time off the ice. Wis, should file a name change in the courts to be James Pronger then all would be will with the world and he wouldn't be missing a beat.

LOL!

Yup, a definite joke the way Pronger gets a pass by the league.

I wonder if enough people made enough noise that somehow we could forcer Campbell to have to address the issue publicly.

What can we as fans do short of writing his office, which will get s***canned anyway? Can we keep sending in letters to somebody like Bob McKenzie and see if he'll make a stink of it?
