Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted March 22, 2008 They are on such an insane hot streak (including destroying the Ducks last night; holding them without a single shot in the third period), have good physical players, good forwards, good defense, and you can tell they're hungry for a cup. In fact, I think a lot of last year's victory over the Sharks was based on momentum gained off of luck. Datsyuk stealing the puck from the goalie, Lang's (yes Lang) clutch shot to keep us in the game. I remember watching the first two games thinking, "theres no way we're getting past these guys", but somehow we did. i know regular season success doesn't mean much in the post season, but if we end up versing the Sharks, we're going to have to play out of our minds. Zion 93 Report post Posted March 22, 2008 They should scare us. I've been following them all season, and they're finally playing the way I expected them to with their roster. They won 3 in a row before getting Soupy, and if Ryan Clowe comes back, they're going to have ridiculous depth. Too big, too fast... that's how I would describe them, and now that Marleau is actually trying, the second line looks very good. Torrey Mitchell and Devon Setoguchi have come out of nowhere and earned roster spots. "Little Joe" Pavelski shoots like Paul Kariya in shootouts and Craig Rivet put quite the beatdown on Jason Chimera earlier this season. He's one of my fave D-men on that team. Nabokov is top 5. 'Nuff said. They can take the President's Trophy. Wings don't need it.
HockeyCrazy3033 168 Report post Posted March 22, 2008 They are definitely a scary team. But I'll worry about them when and if the Wings face them.
edicius 3,269 Report post Posted March 22, 2008 I wouldn't be totally heartbroken if the Sharks took it all. They've been "that team" for the past few seasons and they deserve some playoff success. Obviously, I'd prefer the Wings win it all, but if the Sharks do it, it won't kill me. As long as it ain't the Ducks again.
Cern 0 Report post Posted March 22, 2008 It's good that San Jose is becoming a threat, actually. The last few years the Wings have waltzed into topping the league they've had early exits in the playoffs. Last season they struggled even to top their own division for most of the season, lost out on the President's Trophy, and went the deepest they've been into the playoffs since they last won the Cup. If anything a change in perspective going into the playoffs (ie - second place) might be exactly the kick they need.

DaKineMaui 8 Report post Posted March 22, 2008 I'll root for SJ. (was the last NHL game I attended) Hope to meet them in the Conference final. I also hope they have a blistering and brutal first 2 rds. 7 games in each......155 OTs total. (And on the other side, I can't help but root for the Washington Ovechkins to somehow claw their way into that 8 spot.) aloha
awingsincebirth 0 Report post Posted March 22, 2008 Ya, they are a damn good team. Nonetheless, I'm gonna wanna see some proof that a few of their players can play in the playoffs (Marleau, Chechoo, etc.) before I start to get too worried. I kind of doubt they are going to catch us for the Presidents, as I think that we'll finish strong against the division, but that really doesn't matter to me at all anyways. I thought that they were GREATLY underachieving for much of the season. But they are really picking it up now, and it looks like Campbell was a tremendous pick up. However, if they end up drawing Vancouver in the first round (which is very likely), who honestly knows what could happen. I think that Vancouver can get any team, no matter how stacked, into the trap of those boring, 2-1 games. Luongo could easily steal a series against anyone. It's gonna be one hell of a run to the Cup in the West, that's for damn sure. PS. On a side note, do most people argree with me that the West is far superior to the east, both in depth, and individual teams?? In my mind, not only does the West have stronger teams deeper down the standings, but I'd also argue we have the Top 3 teams, and 4 of the Top 5.
Doggy 130 Report post Posted March 22, 2008 I watched the game yesterday against the Ducks and I'm convinced the Sharks are very beatable. The Ducks were awful. They were undisciplined, sloppy and reactive (especially in the 3rd). The Sharks should've won by 4 goals minimum. They did a great job of having the puck but did nothing with it. The Sharks are a very good team and I've always said our biggest threat. But they're nothing to be scared of. If we're supposed to be a champion team, we can beat them. GMRwings1983 8,803 Report post Posted March 22, 2008 The only thing that's scary about the Sharks is their logo. This team's so-called stars have disappeared too many times in the playoffs for me to sweat over them.

It makes me laugh when I hear Leaf fans say, "All we need to do is get into the playoffs and anything can happen" and they start naming off Anaheim 2003, Calgary 2004, and Edmonton 2006. Yes anything can happen, but those are all teams from the Western Conference. Anything can happen in the West, not the East.

wings_fanatic 677 Report post Posted March 22, 2008 Seriously, the Sharks don't scare me at all. Last time they played us, they had their entire team playing, meanwhile wings were missing cheli, rafi, lids, clearys.... and Dom was rusty on his first night back in 3 weeks.... and yet they barely beat us, and technically didn't becasue their 3rd goal shouldn't have counted. They are not a big threat, they are just playing well right now, wings can and will easily match them in the playoffs if they make it to the finals with the wings... 'Nuff said. They can take the President's Trophy. Wings don't need it. People have short memories. Al the experts were saying the sam ethings last year. There was no way that Detroit could beat them. Luck? I guess it depends how you look at it but... That shot that Lang scored with 30 seconds left in game 4 was a bad goal by Nabokov. Call it luck or bad goaltending. If you remember, in game 5 we KILLED them. I think it was 4-1 and in the following elimination game, we also beat them soundly. Remember game 2. They blew a 2-0 lead. In fact if I remember right they blew leads in 3 of the 4 games we beat them. Luck? Or poor coaching? Yea they are bigger, younger and faster but they have proved repeatedly that they don't have the mental toughness to get to the finals. Two years ago they had a 2 games to 0 lead on Oil and lost. I'm not worried. They are on a regular season streak but they still have basically the same guys the same goaltender and the same coach. On paper they should win it all but the same goes for the last 2 years........
Zion 93 Report post Posted March 22, 2008 Game 6 was a 2-0 shutout. Mikael Samuelsson earned his spot in Ken Holland and Mike Babcock's heart FOREVER, scoring both goals, and explaining why he still sees PP time.
Zion 93 Report post Posted March 22, 2008 Kidding aside, my wife and I follow both teams, and that is what we were saying to ourselves last night, when the Sharks just couldn't finish, but were dominating the game (especially the 3rd period) was, "This looks like a Wings game".
