Antilles328 0 Report post Posted April 3, 2008 I was at today's Wings/Hawks game and don't get too upset we lost on purpose. I had nosebleed seats as usual but I spied an interesting face in the press box nearby. Who was it? Darryl Sutter, coach of the Calgary Flames. Either they are anticipating us falling behind San Jose, Nashville or Vancouver taking 7th place from them, or already looking at their potential second round match up, because Sutter was definitely not in Calgary tonight. Calgary is playing tomorrow night in Minnesota so Sutter decided to pop on down to Chicago and check out the competition. The Wings realized this and instructed Downey to throw the game. Redwingsfan18 1 Report post Posted April 3, 2008 The Wings did not throw the game tonight, they just got outplayed in every aspect and looked terrible. Sure they're playing slightly timid but you shouldn't throw games in pro sports, it ruins the integrity. Regardless, if he was really there, he was doing his job and scouting a "potential" match up. He can't sit back and wait til the last day, it'll be too late.

daniel1 32 Report post Posted April 3, 2008 Keenan is the coach for the Calgary Flames. Sutter is the GM now but he used to coach them before Keenan and Playfair. He's probably anticipating a second round matchup, which would be a good series. The Flames are playing pretty good right now and if Kipper gets hot then they would definitely give us a battle. Kp-Wings 3 Report post Posted April 3, 2008 Sutter must be a genie. Only that could explain how he used his mind reading powers to learn that Babcock had planned on Downey throwing the game! Right? RIGHT?
Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted April 3, 2008 I am so confused right now. I think he's saying that because Sutter was at the game, the Wings lost on purpose so he couldn't scout us and exploit all our weaknesses, but the Wings just got their butts kicked. Antilles328 0 Report post Posted April 3, 2008 I think he's saying that because Sutter was at the game, the Wings lost on purpose so he couldn't scout us and exploit all our weaknesses, but the Wings just got their butts kicked. Fact: Sutter was at the Wings/Blackhawks game Fact: The Red Wings got demolished. Fact: Flames are playing Minnesota tomorrow Fact: We are currently 1st in the West, Calgary is currently 7th. Everything else is merely conjecture. I just thought it was interesting that he was there since chances are that Calgary will not play us until the second round (assuming we both win). Yzerfan1999 81 Report post Posted April 3, 2008 Who cares, the Wings will thrash anyone they play in the first round. This is the first year in a long time that I am actually confident of that.

Third Man In 2,091 Report post Posted April 3, 2008 What's the big surprise? Teams scout each other all the time--especially if it involves a relatively short trip from Minny to Chicago to watch a couple of teams you might play in the first or second round. Sutter got an eyeful tonight, too, at least from the Wings.
TTownBigMan1980 0 Report post Posted April 3, 2008 Well if they told Hasek to throw the game, why pull him so early? Did he make it too obvious? CONSPIRACY!!! RUNS FROM THE GHOST OF J. EDGAR HOOVER!! AAHHHHH!!!

calfan 0 Report post Posted April 3, 2008 Who cares, the Wings will thrash anyone they play in the first round. This is the first year in a long time that I am actually confident of that. It's interesting you're so confident about that. Not that I necessarily disagree, but of the teams in the top 4, the only team more beatable than Detroit is Minny. Sutter is probably scouting the Flames' potential first round matchup, not second. He'll have plenty of time to scout the second round matchup once he knows what the possibilities are out there. Calgary can still finish 3, 5, 6, 7 OR 8. Two scenarios play out for the Flames playing the Wings, not just if the Sharks catch the Wings. And besides, with the way the Flames have played all year, there's no point in worrying about a second round matchup when its unlikely they get past the first round. I'll probably say it several times today in several different threads, but the question "are the Wings tough enough to win the Cup" isn't the biggest question. The biggest question on this team should be "are the Wing's strong enough in goal to win the Cup". Despite any stats or anything else you want to put out there, in a conference that has some of the best goalies in the league, the Wings don't want to be in a goaltending battle - they'll lose. The Sharks, Ducks, Nucks and Flames have better tenders. The Avs, Wild and Stars have guys who can be incredibly hot and steal games. The Wings will need to rely on the other 5 guys on the ice to limit the chances on goal. The Wings win as a team - their goalies steal nothing. Don't be too surprised by last night's result. The Hawks have not been eliminated yet. They believe they can make the playoffs and they are playing playoff hockey. Of course they're gonna thump the Wings. They're gonna beat the stuffing out of the Preds too in all likelihood although the Preds are still trying to make it to the dance as well. The Wings have nothing (really) to play for. HockeyCrazy3033 168 Report post Posted April 3, 2008 (edited) I don't get the knock on our goaltending, I really don't. Both Ozzie and Dom have had their share of being great this season *Ozzie the first half, Dom most of the second* Yeah they've cooled down, but so had the whole team last month. Now don't get me wrong here, they have NOT been the same the past month or maybe even recently and neither has been 'stellar' but I don't have any doubt in my mind that come next week Dom *or Ozzie when needed* will step it up. The playoffs are a whole different beast. Goaltending has never been the Wings problem and I don't see it to be the case anytime soon.
