bellarina 1 Report post Posted April 21, 2008 I'm surprised that there is no thread here for Helm. This kid is great to watch..far better than Hartigan. Thoughts?
betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted April 21, 2008 I dunno if I'd say I'm "seriously impressed." Certainly very pleased. Dude's MUCH better than Hartigan. With all of seven games' NHL experience before his baptism by fire in the playoffs it probably would have been a plus if Helm could hop on the ice without tripping on the boards, but unlike with Hartigan, I never felt like he was in there just to rest the starters and we'd be doing good to escape his shifts unharmed. But I think Hudler being "demoted" to the fourth line is more like Babcock's way of rewarding Helm by giving him a linemate who can help him produce, and it worked. If that line stays together, it would be great to see them chip in the odd goal here and there. Those are the types of goals, from those types of lines that you need to be successful in the playoffs. With the return of Maltby, it should be real interesting to see how Babs handles the change.
WhiteLightning91 105 Report post Posted April 21, 2008 I was impressed, but since I've seen him play in juniors and thought he was a solid player I wouldn't say I was seriously impressed. I thought his speed was great. He seemed to be generating chances and was really good in the transition game. Give him a puck-moving defenseman out there like Kronwall or Lidstrom and I bet you would see multiple odd-man rushes between him and Hudler.
e_mcgrath88 0 Report post Posted April 21, 2008 Made a few rookie mistakes but ya.. I really like his game.. I watched him in Grand Rapids a few games this year and he was one of the best players on the ice every time..
Aussie_Wing 354 Report post Posted April 21, 2008 It’s no wonder he’s my favourite prospect! Not afraid to get into the corners to fight for the puck and he will always take a hit. What a tough little player he is. I managed to see Game 5 and he was flying out there. Just had to resort to highlights from Game 6 but from what I saw he played really well. Had a few scoring chances and set up Hudler for a goal. Certainly very impressed with his ability to stand up to the intensity and the way he’s going he might have played himself out of returning to GR.
Frozen-Man 144 Report post Posted April 21, 2008 I was impressed with the young guy. I mean its a matter of perspective, compared with Dats or Zetts I'm not impressed but considering he played on the 4th line and only has 7 games of NHL experience before the playoffs and got an assist, was a +1, took no penalties, and just seemed to play well and with composure I thought he did great. Turkey 0 Report post Posted April 21, 2008 I liked his speed and he hits a lot for a little guy. I also thought he did a good job of creating chances. I'd love to see him stay in but I suspect that once Maltby is healthy, he'll sit.
Bender 0 Report post Posted April 21, 2008 Helm was solid. He played with a confidence way beyond Hartigan. If he has good chemistry with Huds, then by all means Babcock should play him again.
wingslogo19 281 Report post Posted April 21, 2008 I like Helm... But I think he'll sit once maltby comes back, though i don't want him to
DraperFan MN 0 Report post Posted April 21, 2008 I like Helm... But I think he'll sit once maltby comes back, though i don't want him to When Maltby comes back, Sammy sits. I am seriously impressed. Uses his speed, holds on to the puck, plays bigger than he really is, and has good ice vision. Oh yeah, he plays well along the boards and grinds when necessary. What on God's green earth does it take for the rest of you to be seriously impressed? Hockey snobs... He and Meech will have roster spots next year.
Reds4Life 51 Report post Posted April 21, 2008 When Maltby comes back, Sammy sits. I wish Babcock sits Sammy, but I doubt it. Babcock really like Sammy, I don't understand why. ashenhigh 9 Report post Posted April 21, 2008 that McCarty-Helm-Hudler line was awesome yesterday. They seriously are bringing some heat. They had that awesome goal, plus in the first Mac threw a perfect pass from the blue line to a streaking hudler that was saved. I just love how the 3 of them are playing together. I really hope Helm doesnt get benched when Maltby comes back. Sammy needs to be benched.
Superman54 91 Report post Posted April 21, 2008 I love this kid, he showed soo much confidence and I expect him to have a bright future. I would be suprised to still see him in the lineup once maltby comes back though.
gowingsgo 3 Report post Posted April 21, 2008 Scotty always shyed away from playing the young uns, I hope Babs keeps him in the lineup and lets that youth infuse some much needed energy into the lineup.
revmo10 3 Report post Posted April 21, 2008 He played really well except when he lost the battle for the puck that lead to an almost breakaway for the preds.... but all in all I like him a lot. I'm not sure I would sit Sammy. He seems to be making better decisions in the playoffs than he did for the second half of the season. I suppose its a good problem to have when its tough to decide who to sit!

I don't think Sammy is by any means great but the guy did have 40 points this season which tied him with Homer for 7th on the team. I know he takes a lot of shots and all but 40 points is pretty good for a role guy.
Guest drwings1 Report post Posted April 21, 2008 kids got heart drive determination, and thats my favorite qualities. he looked so slick yesterday, with and without the puck. hes got great speed also
Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted April 21, 2008 I'm not surprised. This guy was Medicine Hats best player in the Memorial Cup last year. Hopefully he gets to keep playing, he grows a wicked playoff beard
Ti-girl 0 Report post Posted April 21, 2008 I've been pimping Helm since the Wings drafted him. Way better than the 5th round that he went in. And to think, four years ago he was playing Jr B.

Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted April 21, 2008 Has there been an explanation yet for why Hartigan played all those games instead of Helm? More "team toughness". But Babs realized we had enough of that and decided to put some real toughness in.

Yemack 1 Report post Posted April 22, 2008 Who are you kidding? His playoff beard looks like mold. wow Ti girl.. you really are a dedicated fan of a player I'll give you that. I think Helm def. earned more chance. Plus Huds-Helm-McCarty line is a real good one IMO. However when Maltby comes back, which line does he play? He isn't going to be in 1st or 2nd. Maybe Cleary will get promoted to 2nd and Maltby will be in Drake-Draper-Maltby

Maybe Cleary will get promoted to 2nd and Maltby will be in Drake-Draper-Maltby I try my best. I think he earned a chance. His speed adds something to the lineup that no one else has. He's defensively responsible, has a good scoring touch, and speed to burn. His only problem is the fact that he weighs about a buck seventy. And his playoff beard DOES look like mold, though last year, they did the whole "lets dye our hair black for the playoffs" thing. So. effing. Ugly. Makes it worse that he's blonde.
