I think Chells has a shot because of his age, the number of games he has played, and that he has played more playoff games than anyone. I think that shows great dedication to hockey and he has a good shot at being rewarded for it.

I hope he wins it. Chelios has been my favorite Wings since he joined!

I think this part is more telling than any numbers:

""The biggest thing is that I've been able to have so many great years with the Red Wings' organization and team," Chelios said. "There's nothing better than winning, and I've been given the opportunity to contribute to a winning team. The fact that I've never had to uproot for the past eight years has also been important. For me, hockey is still as much fun as it has ever been."

There ya' go. Masterton.

Chelios is certainly deserving, but any player that beats cancer and continues to play is the winner in my book. Jason Blake should win the Masterton, and there shouldn't even be any doubt about it in my opinion.

Props to Cheli regardless for the nomination.

He hasn't beat cancer yet. He's still far from done battling it.

It kind of looks, from recent past winners, that the Masterton has become the "get horribly injured or get cancer and come back to hockey" award.

If this is the case, the Chelios would never stand a chance to receive it.

I guess being an ageless cyborg has its disadvantages as well as its advantages.

Cheli has no chance. And he was nominated by the Wings last year if Im not mistaken.

This either goes to Blake or Pisani (I suggest you check out his story if you dont know why). Next year itll likely go to Richard Zednik. This trophy is basically the pity award nowadays. Whoevers had worse health issues and is still in the NHL. Thats basically what it comes down to nowadays.

Favorite quote "I played a ton in Chicago, and this is far better." He deserves his jersey retired here, sound slike he would rather have it here.

As much as I like Chelios, he should NOT have his jersey retired by the Wings. Having a jersey retired is a really special moment, and Chelios hasn't done enough for the Wings to get that honor (he's done a lot, and is a great player, but not enough for a jersey retirement).

The Wings are not the Divealanche - they don't just retire numbers because they feel like it (who, at last check, are now preparing the jersey retirement ceremonies of Steve Konawalchuk and Mickey Mantle for next season). A jersey retirement is a special event, and the next jersey retired in Detroit will be Lidstrom.

Again, nothing against Chelios. I like him a lot (met him a few times, really great guy), and he's a good player that has done a lot for the Wings, and hockey itself, but a jersey retirement is a stretch.

You may say, this isn't the Avs org and they won't do it. But Cheli is not Ray Bourque. He didn't come to Det just to finally win a cup, he came to Det because he wanted to be a winner. And he stayed here longer than 1.5 seasons.

I LOVED RAY BOURQUE so don't take this the wrong way, but Cheli's situation does not compare with Ray's.

Having said that he won't get it retired, just wanted to point out that the situations are not really comparable.

NOW, if they win a cup this and next year with him on the roster, and he continues to embody the red wing philosophy of putting the team ahead of himself, he has a chance.

He has accepted play on the PK without complaining about not being on the PP. He accepts being the 5th dman when he could be a 2-3 on a bad team. He sacrifices his minutes and stats(potential minutes and stats) to play a defensive role on a winning team. And even though sitting out back to back eats him up inside, he does what is best for the team. Hell he may have played in other cities, but he has almost played a career in Detroit!

I would love to see #24 in the rafters but I am not sure I see it happening.
