After a hard fought series with the New York Rangers, New Jersey Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur has turned down the invitation to play for Team Canada in next month's World Championship in Quebec City and Halifax.

Brodeur told the New York Post that the emotional five game series against Sean Avery and the Rangers has taken away desire to play right now.

When talking about the loss to the Rangers, Brodeur called the series a "circus" and wouldn't refer to Avery by name, calling him only "You Know Who".

"I was really disappointed with how it unfolded," Brodeur told the Post. "To play a rival and get dominated like that, it's not fun at all."

On Monday, Brodeur was announced as a finalist for his fourth Vezina Trophy. He is up against San Jose Sharks goaltender Evgeni Nabokov and Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist.

Wow, who would have thought he would take it that bad?

Yeah, the guy needs to calm down a bit and play a couple less game during the season so he's fresh for the playoffs. He didn't look alright in the series vs. the Rangers. And it didn't help with Avery's antics and the continuous nudging by most anyone in the Rangers who came close to Brodeur. Probably not the best idea to go the internationals then...

this is the article on sportsnet. has a little more to it and i really dont think he is used to this sort of thing. brodeur has been around forever and has earned the right to take some time off.

The Devils' goaltender told The Record on Monday that he does not respect Sean Avery because of the personal insults the Rangers' trash-talking pest bombarded him with throughout this season and the first-round playoff series between the rival teams.

That is why Brodeur refused to shake Avery's hand following the Rangers' 5-3 series-clinching victory Friday night at Prudential Center.

"Why should I have?" Brodeur asked. "When you shake hands, it's a sign of respect. That's what you're doing. I didn't respect the stuff he said. I respect him as a hockey player. He contributed big time [as a player], but the stuff that he said, a lot of it was pretty bad. It had no bearing on the game or anything."

Brodeur confirmed that Avery made many references to Brodeur's divorce in his many verbal attacks at the New Jersey goaltender.

pre-zactly! How are ya, Duckie? OK??

Marty needs to get over it. Maybe Avery's on the team, and that's Marty's problem. ;)

How Brodeur is acting right now is called "bad sportsmanship."

It's a game, you lost, grow up and get over it. Wow.

I really doubt this is all on Avery though. Using Avery as an excuse would be the thing I'd expect him to do. I think he's just upset he got owned and is now putting the blame on Avery.

I trash talk so much in sports, get trash talked... get pushed around and distracted and NEVER have I not wanted to stop playing.

I suspect this goes beyond Avery. It kind of sickens me how people are jumping on this Pro Avery, Anti-Brodeur bandwagon. I am no Marty or Devils fan, but Brodeur is one of the most decorated goalies on all time, and he is a baby because he wouldn't shake Avery's hand and he doesn't want to play in the WC? He just lost a really disappointing series against an arch-rival and had all the wind knocked out of him. If you were in his shoes, you probably wouldn't have much motivation to play in a half-assed tournament made up of second rate players.

People need to get there s*** straight - if anyone is a baby, its Avery and his name calling. "Fatso"? Give me a break - an 8 year old could have come up with a better insult than that.

I'd love to see the Wings play the Rangers in the finals, then everyone will be crying about Avery and his antics, as they should, and you guys will understand what kind of dick this guy is. Average hockey player on an average hockey team.

I'll point out my sig. quote here; 'When you lose say little, when you win - say less'. A real hockey player with any brains or class follows that rule.

Hey Zata, I was looking at your sig. and its pretty darn sweet - but I noticed something - you have the Czech and the Slovak flags/players backwards. I think Hasek, and Hudler are Czech, and Kopecky is Slovakian.
