Can/Should the Wings Sweep Colorado?

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

Anybody CAN sweep another team, anybody CAN beat another team on any given night. :P

I never expect sweeps these days in the NHL even though one happened last round. More often than not the separation between 1 and 8 seeds is not much, we all know Nashville and Calgary gave Detroit trouble as 8 seeds the last two years.

COULD Detroit sweep Colorado? :P Of course. Will they, not likely. My sort of homeristic prediciton is 6 games for the Wings.

Are you kidding? We were lucky to survive that one.

Wings need a much better 60 minute effort in Game 2.

Lucky? Every hockey game in the playoff is about who got "lucky". Most games are 1 goal decisions and each teams have their fair share of luck. There are wide open nets missed, pucks that rattle off of posts and cross-bars, etc. And usually on both sides - Just like game 1.

The way to win is to have more chances than the oposition and that way the odds are in your favor. We need to out-chance the Avs and then will win by the law of averages - Usually. Sometimes it doesn't work out that way and the team that outchances the oposition actually loses. That's why they play a seven game series.

This is why sweeps are not very common. The sweeper has to overwhelm their oposition with chances so that even when they don't get the bounces, they will still win.

So were we "lucky" to win game 1. Yes. But were they "lucky" also, yes. The difference is we had many more scoring chances than them. The better team won game 1. The Avs could have won the game but it would have been a robbery because the Wings clearly outplayed them

I'm not expecting a sweep by any means. I think the avs have too much heart to roll over and die. and Lord knows the wings haven't played a complete series since 2002.

wings in six

Huh? I don't know what you mean by a "complete series". You mean a sweep? Sweeps are rare especially after round 1.

This thread reminds me of one last year during the playoffs, when we were playing Anaheim. I believe it was cailling for beating the Ducks in 5 and that it felt like a cup winning year. Sure enough, it jinxed us. But maybe we're okay, because you were just talking about a sweep. I don't think we'll sweep, especially if Foresberg returns. He'll get the denver crowd in a frenzey for one game and steal one. But then we'll recover from that once last final punch from being backed into a corner and finish them off.

Last years Ducks were a far superior team that this years Avs. The first two games against the Duckies were close hard fought affairs that we split. Game 3 was a 5-0 laugher in our favor in their building and they were going into game 4 without dickhead (oops...Pronger).

This year games 1 and 2 were blowouts in which they pulled their starting goalie in both games. In both games the Avs just haven't even shown up.

That said, I expect the Avs will steal 1 game in Denver and we will finish them off next weekend 4-1. Keep your finger crossed.

This series is far from over. Two games in Colorado we COULD win easily, or the return of Forsberg and a hot Theodore could cause problems. Of course I still think the Wings will win, but Colorado isn't out yet. I would think Wings fans would have caught on by now given the WIngs' history as recently as last round.

Somebody said this on one of the other forums and it bears repeating:

The Avs will have to beat us in 4 of the next 5 games to win the series. The chances of that happening are somewhere around zero unless we completley fall apart and they all suddenly start playing a lot better. So the goal is to finish them off as quickly as possible so that we can rest up for Dallas.

San Jose is imploding again this year. After having Calgary down 3-2 last week, they couldn't close them out and Calgary forced a game seven. The Sharks didn't even show up for game 6.

Then they go to round 2 and drop the first game at home. No mental toughness. Poor Coaching. No killer instinct. I expect to be playing Dallas in the WC Final.

Yes, I think the Wings can sweep Colorado.

Granted, it is sort of a longshot. Colorado always makes a series out of things against us, and of course they'll give everything they've got, especially since it's the Red Wings, their "rivals". Plus, if you look back at recent history, the Wings haven't swept a playoff series from a team in something like 8-9 years, when they did it to Los Angeles back in the 1999-2000 playoffs.

I still think it can be done, though, and I hope it does happen. I know some people want this series to actually go on longer (for whatever reason, most likely rivalry nostalgia), but I could care less about that. The faster we eliminate the Dives, and send those stupid turnip-colored losers home, the better chance we have of winning the Cup. Rest is very important in the playoffs, especially for our older players, and if the San Jose - Dallas series drags on to (hopefully) 7 games, it'll be even better.

The more likely prediction would be for the Wings winning in 5 games, but a sweep is entirely possible, and would be nice (for bragging rights and all). We'll see what happens.

I know. Game 4 is Thursday, which is four whole days away. That's a long wait for me.

:D

EXACTLY. For the first time in a long time I looked at the way the Wings were attacking Nashville in game one and thought "DAMN...we look GOOD!" Then I watched games 3 & 4 in that series and thought "where did that other Wings team go?!?!" I think even THINKING about a sweep is a waste of time. Just worry about winning the next game and then the series.

It's only been 1 GAME. Don't count your chickens before they hatch in a 7 game series, especially after just 1 GAME.

I hope the Wings don't sweep, I have tickets to game five which will be my first playoff game which I really want to go to....

I thought I'd bump this back up to the top. Not only was I starting to think we could sweep them after watching Theodore's first couple of saves in game 1 when his rebound control was terrible and you knew he was going to get smoked. After watching game 2 i'm even more convinced its a possibility. Home or away, it doesn't change the fact that our depth is better up front, better on the back end and better in net.

The only thing bothering me is that we aren't scoring on Budaj. I keep thinking here's another relatively unknown, upstart goalie just waiting to pull some bulls*** on us and make life difficult.

That 5th goal we got in game 2 on Budaj was huge in my mind. Finally, we got 1 past him. Too bad we did nothing on our cutesy, fartsy, POS 5 on 3. I didn't like that PP at all and thought we looked terrible.

All in all we beat them soundly. They aren't even beating us physically. Kronner and Drake are by themselves matching the physical output of the Aves. Lappy has pretty much been a non factor, McCormick can't do much of anything on skates and McCleod is even worse. How these guys find jobs in the NHL continues to baffle me.

Sweeps are hard to come by but I wouldn't be shocked if we managed it. We're better in every aspect of the game and game 2 showed just how much better we are.

GS&T

The only thing I can say about the 5-3's (I know plural, DOH!), is that the team was trying to conserve some energy. They played almost the entire last half of the 2nd on a constant PP. I think Babs had them lay back a little to conserve energy. They did have great puck control, but it was the same 10 guys that played almost the last 10 minutes in a row.

But other than that you are spot on, I thought what killed the wings last year was PP ineffectiveness due to Schneids injury, Ralf has a great tip-able shot, however it is tip-able for his guys and the other team. Don't get me wrong I think Ralf >> Schneids, I am just commenting on the PP.

Those are my two largest concerns. Though Q might end up stubbornly sticking with Theodore, which would be great. I was just praying we would score *one* goal against Budaj... definitely made me nervous if he went two games stonewalling the Red Wings.

Makes me a bit nervous we could not score on two 5 on 3's -- reminds me of Anaheim. Hopefully we were just conserving and hanging back -- but why? Play different lines on that PP if that is the case.
