Who gets signed?

Recommended Posts

Just something to talk about other than the playoffs. I was just at the http://nhlnumbers.com/overview.php?team=DET site. Curious at who stays and who goes.

Unrestricted Free Agents with contracts up are:

1. Drake (retires or resigns for a 1 year deal)

2. Downey (1 year deal for a little more money)

3. Hartigan ( I am not sold on him yet)

4. McCarty (resigns for a 1 year deal)

5. Cheli (retires or resigns for a 1 year deal)

6. Lilja (a good conversation piece)

7. Stuart (does he really want to be here?)

8. Stafford ( I like him, needs more time in GR though)

9. Hasek (retires no matter what, especially if he's not used in the playoffs anymore)

Restricted Free Agents with contracts expiring are:

1. Flip (will need a decent deal from us or excellent trade bait)

2. Ericsson ( Liljas or Chelis replacement if they didn't return)

3. Quincey ( Good trade bait, ok decent)

4. Howard (our future after ozzie, unless history repeats itself, trading our youth away)

Players we need to get signed sooner than later (imo).

1. Z (sign him KH, lets do this)

2. Kopecky

3. Franzen (they are going to have to pay this guy, if he keeps this up)

And imo if we were to win the cup this year, these players hang it up.

1. Drake

2. Cheli

3. Hasek

Disclaimer: Most of this is just my own opinion, and how I feel about certain players. Please comment about what youguys/gals think.

Cheli is not going to retire until no one will sign him....

DMac will be back.

I think Stuart will be too.

I am unsure about Downey.

Stafford, he isn't an NHL-er so really I dont know if they value him for depth...

Hartigan isn't worth anything with Helm around.

Drake is very intresting but prob will retire.

All Restricted players will be back.

Lilja is the most uncertain as I think there are alot of options out there they can afford to explore.

Hasek... HAHAHAHAHAHA no.

BTW, in case you didn't know players can't be signed until in their last contract year. This includes Zetter and Franzen. They will be paid.

Yeah I knew that, I guess am making more of a statement about having to pay these guys soon. I just dont want Z to go anywhere else. He's making 2.7 this year and 2.9 next year, while Dats is making 6.7 a year.

Zetterberg stays.

Franze stays.

Kopecky goes (if they have a replacement lined up)

Flip is trade bait, but if no one takes him, he stays.

Stuart stays if he wants. I really don't know what he will do. I think if we win the cup the euphoria will keep him here.

Ericcson and Quincey stay.

Howard stays.

Lilja is trade bait, but I don't think anyone will bite. He stays.

McCarty for sure stays. He's a no-risk investment and is paying dividends.

Hartigan goes.

Downey stays.

And Samuellson is traded. With the talent blossoming on this team, I think Sammy's usefulness is outlived. Ideally traded for someone with a little accuracy. But since we won't get much for him, I expect him to go to a crappy team in need of a decent defensive forward for cheap. Maybe they'll give up some young talent for him.

I don't think we can really do this till the playoffs are over and we can assess where we're at; but at the same time it's always fun to play "armchair Kenny Holland" so here goes.

At forward I would give Mac another year; he's cheap, can stand up for teamates, the fans love him and he can contribute too. Drake I let go as we need the roster spots and Mac gets in over him. Downey I give another year too for the fans and the grit factor. I make everyone here mad and keep that logo hunting shinguard assassin known as Sammy. He's versatile, can play 2nd or 3rd line duty and has been doing better on the 2nd pp lately. I don't expect too many changes other at forward really, our "search" for a power forward may have ended with finding one who can score (Mule) combined with one who can fight (Mac). I expect Helm, Kopecky, and Abdelkader to fight for time next year and bounce between GR and Detroit. The odds of not having at least one forward out with injuries at any given time is pretty rare so I'm sure we'll see lots of these kids up and down all year. If Brunnstrom is signed however that may spell the end for Downey though as Babs will probably choose Brunnstrom over Downey if it comes to that as the final roster spot, which is too bad cause I really like Downs, but he's replaceable.

The defence could be in line for more changes though. Goodbye Cheli, thanx for everything and if you want a job as an assistant coach it's yours, but I've seen you get burned too many times in these playoffs to count on your 48 (next season) year old legs for 82 games + playoffs next year. There's a lot of depth in the organization and the Wings need to see what they got cause we may need to deal some of it for a young goaltender next year if Howard craps the bed. Did anyone notice Pyett was on Team Canada's roster for the Worlds? If he has a good showing it will be hard to keep him down in GR for long. I think our 3rd defence pair is weak; whether it's Lebs or Lils it's still weak. To address this I would let Lilja go, sign Stuart for 3 years, not resign Cheli and start to develop Meech, Ericcson, Kindl, Pyett and Quincey at the NHL level for various callups and see which one or two of these guys has what it takes to be the 6th and 7th defenceman. Lebda because of his skating and team first attitude gets to stay and hopefully develop into a Rafalski/JM Liles type D-man. Personally I think Meech is better than either Lilja or Lebda right now anyways.

The goaltending looks pretty simple right now; Ozzie is signed for a couple more years and Howard gets to start the year in Detroit. Hasek retires. At the All-Star break we see how they're doing and if everything's peachy we leave well enough alone. If Howard hasn't shown he can play at the NHL level and Osgood is just "average" then we deal a couple of those D prospects for a proven goalie at the deadline. An intriguing prospect however is Huet or Kolzig. If Huet doesn't resign with Washington then I would offer him a 2 year deal for around 2.5mil. Or if nobody picks up Kolzig then I would offer him a one year 2mil deal with a team option for a 2nd year. Kolzig would be nice to have around for insurance and I think Huet is a bona fide #1 guy too.

The wild card here is Brunnstrom; if we win the Cup I don't see how he can turn the Wings down. If he signs here and is as good as advertised that means we could afford to deal someone like Hudler or Samuelsson along with a good D prospect for whatever we need at the deadline or sooner. At some point and time we have to decide who to keep and who to trade as I don't think we can afford big new deals for everyone if they keep developing. Franzen looks like a 3mil or higher guy now and Flip and Hudler probably won't settle for anything less than 3 either. Z is gonna command at least 6-7/year and I think we want to keep Stuart too (another 3.5/year). I hope Kenny can convince Flip and the Mule to take less than market value in exchange for more years (like Dats), but if we have to "lose" people then Sammy and Hudler would be first to go in my book. I'm not saying they're bad players, it's just that I would rank Dats, Z, Franzen, Homer, Flip and Kopecky as bigger priorities to lock up long term.

I think we're in a pretty enviable situation at every position except for goal though; a lot of teams can't scrape together a solid 2 lines and 4 D while really we are wondering who will play on our 4th line and who gets the 7th D position. If Howard turns out to be a go-to guy we could be set for years to come. Holland and co. have done a superb job so far and deserve all the credit they're getting.

1. Drake = gone

2. Downey = 1 year deal for min.

3. Hartigan = gone

4. McCarty = 1 year deal for min.

5. Cheli = another year for him

6. Lilja = gone

7. Stuart = if he wants to stay and if we can keep him for 3.5 keep him

8. Stafford = Grand Rapids

9. Hasek = time to go :(

Restricted Free Agents with contracts expiring are:

1. Flip = keep him

2. Ericsson = KEEP HIM

4. Howard = keep him (at least until '09)

Players we need to get signed sooner than later (imo).

1. Z = longterm deal

2. Kopecky = keep him

3. Franzen = keep him

Trade Sammy and Lebda... go after Malone and Erskine (he was great for the Cap's) or Jason Smith.

IIRC, they can be signed to extensions starting in July. I expect Zetts to get a Pasha-like deal and Mule to get a very nice contract as well this summer.

Gone: Drake, Downey, Hartigan, Hasek

Maybe Gone: Lillypad, if Cheli retires he'll be here because of Bab's man-love for him

Maybe Gone: Cheli, if he is counted on for top 4 minutes I don't think he'll want to stay, if he knows he'll be the 5th or 6th D-man he'll stay

Hopefully Staying: Stuart, Stafford (We need depth in GR)

Staying: D-Mac>Drake, Downey, Hartigan, Stafford. We need him and he needs us.

RFA:

Goes: Quincey, I think he won't want to stay because he could get first team minutes somewhere else, so he'll ask for a bit more thna expected

Stays: Flip, Howie, Big Jon E

Others:

Zata: he won't get a long term deal people, not with his reoccurring injuries, it'd be suicide to sign him to a long deal for management. Needless to say though i hope we sign him come July 1st to a 30 year deal haha

Mule: He needs to be more consistent throughout the whole season, but he has shown his worth in the playoffs to get a nice 4-5 year deal

Kopecky: I'm indifferent, we got JA, Helm who can do what he can, plus they don't get smoked every game like Koppy does.

Given that Lilja would not have played at all but for injuries last season, and given that Lilja has been benched in the playoffs this season, I fail to see the origin of the 'man-love' you specify.

Drake is old and it seems a lot of people don't want him back or don't expect him back but along with Kronner he's been far and away the most physically punishing Wing in the playoffs...I've been so surprised with how he's stepped up his hitting game in the postseason.

p.s. Mark my words, The Glass Domino will be back, I'm guessing for the Avs.

Forgive my lack of contract knowledge here, but is there something available akin to the two way contract that would let Chelios be a player coach, without taking a roster spot all year (i.e. he is an assistant coach, but can be called up to fill a spot in the case of injury or need)? What would the cap implications be in such a scenario?

Edit: Didn't think this warranted a new thread. Apologies if this seems like a hijack, and feel free to move if so.

My guess is that any salary would have to be under the cap if the person plays at all that year, and was a previous player. It would otherwise just be a loophole and not respectful to the other teams.
