Swayze 81 Report post Posted May 4, 2008 Okay, I meant to write this thread a few days ago, but kept forgetting, so here it is. Has anyone noticed that the playoff setup is kinda like it was in '97? We won the first round in 6 to a division rival. We swept the 2nd round. (We'll see what happens in the third round, but it has a decent chance of going 6 games, like it did in '97). And we have a chance to play Philly in the Stanley Cup Finals. Just something that's been going through my head recently that I thought i'd share, and if you guys see any other similarities between then and now, feel free to add on

nkuehnl 0 Report post Posted May 4, 2008 (edited) There's parallels to all of our successful playoffs runs. Round 1 '96-'97: 4-2 win over division rivals '97-'98: 4-2 win over a team that did more damage than most people thought, with crazy loud fans in their building '01-'02: 4-2 win over a team that looked to have the momentum - center ice goal by Lidstrom crushed their hopes Round 2 '96-'97: 4-0 sweep '97-'98: Massively outscored an old rival '01-'02: Complete domination of an old rival In fact, the best way to look at it: Round 1 was '01/'02 with the 4-2 nerve wracking series featuring a center ice Lidstrom goal that deflated the other team Round 2 was '96/'97 with the 4-0 sweep Round 3 will be '97/'98 versus Dallas Round 4 can either be a rehash of the '96/'97 finals or a new piece of history for this team against Pittsburgh Edited May 4, 2008 by nkuehnl

Because I remember the series against Dallas was one of the most hard fought battle in playoff. We fought and paid price for every inch of the ice. Of coures there is no two line pass anymore and Ken Hitchcock isn't behind the Dallas bench, but I expect Dallas Stars to be just as tough and well executed team. 10 Minute Misconduct 104 Report post Posted May 4, 2008 how are people so sure it'll be against dallas? am i missing something here? if san jose wins tonight dallas might as well not even show up to the shark tank.
marcaractac 3,963 Report post Posted May 4, 2008 if san jose comes back to win there gonna be a hard out. if dallas blows this ill be raged. I don't think it would be. They'd come out flying in the first couple games, but after that I'd say they'd get pretty tired and we'd get by them without too much trouble. STAT: no team who has gone 7 games in both the first 2 rounds has ever gotten by the conference finals. And it is quite obvious it is because the wear and tear of that many games at the halfway point is just too tiriing on any team to bear. Just think back to the blowout in game 7 vs the Avs in 2002. By that game, they had nothing left in the tank, no matter how bad they may have wanted it.

You are right but I don't think it is unrealistic to think that Dallas will be our next opponent.

Yzermania19 1 Report post Posted May 4, 2008 (edited) The 96-97 second-round "sweep" was against the Ducks, and IIRC, three of those four games went to OT, and two of them went to multiple OT's. So although it was a sweep it was a hard-won sweep. I remember at the time some people were calling it the first 5 1/2-game sweep in NHL history, because of all the OT's that were needed. LOL At this point I don't know who I'd want to face in the conference finals. You could make an argument for either team. One thing, though is that the Wings really do have Turco's number. And yeah, if they come out the winner, they are going to be a little deflated after being up 3 games to none and letting SJ back into the series. BlackhawksFan 4 Report post Posted May 5, 2008 if san jose comes back to win there gonna be a hard out. if dallas blows this ill be raged. And why is that? Detroit will then face a Sharks team still dogged by playoff ghosts and done with two exhausting, physical 7-game series.

Did a little homework...what do teams who come back from 3-0 to win do in the next round? * 1942 Leafs against us was in the finals, so nothing to go on there. * 1975 Isles against the Pens though...in the next round, they faced the Flyers and...get this...went down 3-0 in the series, only to force a game 7 AGAIN, but this time they lost to the eventual Stanley Cup champs.
