Sergeiwasmyfav 0 Report post Posted May 6, 2008 Most of the analysts are picking the Wings it seems, and I don't like it one bit! I like it better when no one thinks the Wings have a chance, and then they can go out there and prove them wrong. I guess this time they will have to prove everyone right! GO WINGS!! Xitium 272 Report post Posted May 6, 2008 Barry is 6-6 this year. Maggie the monkey is 6-6 this year. Clearly, he knows nothing about picking winners.

Frozen-Man 144 Report post Posted May 6, 2008 Well Melrose only got 50% right in each of the first two rounds so I guess that means either us or the Penguins won't make it to the finals, too bad for the Penguins. Just kidding I think even Melrose got these right.
SouthernWingsFan 854 Report post Posted May 6, 2008 WHAT?! ANOTHER DIMWAT PICKED AGAINST THE WINGS OR IS DOUBTING THEM? CLEARLY THEY DO NOT KNOW THE WINGS ROOL AND DO NOT DROOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh wait somebody is picking for the Wings. Let me change my sarcastic tune a little bit. WOO HOO! SOMEBODY IS ACTUALLY PICKING FOR THE WINGS! HE KNOWS WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT CAUSE HE PICKED THE WINGS! HE KNOWS THE WINGS ROOL! Wait, it's Barry Melrose who did it? Seriously, doesn't really matter to me one way or the other if analysts pick the Wings or not whether we think they are knowledgable or nimrods. They don't play the game on the ice or determine the outcome, and you or I could make a halfway educated guess and get some of these series just as right or wrong in terms of the winner. stormboy 47 Report post Posted May 6, 2008 it's funny that if melrose doesn't pick us we're mad because he clearly knows nothing about hockey. if he does pick us we're mad because he's "cursed." *sigh* i guess you can't make us happy.
RedFX 48 Report post Posted May 7, 2008 I'm getting kinda sick of all these prediction threads. First we're pissed because were picked to lose, then someone picks us and its a curse? Seriously guys, he's an analyst, this is his job. Who the hell cares if he picks us or not. Hockey games aren't decided by how other people pick games. Just my two cents.... TheOctopusKid 19 Report post Posted May 7, 2008 I may be speaking out of turn here but I am an advocate of Barry Melrose (commence the boo's and hissing). Melrose was a Red Wing which I will always honor his connection to this team. But I remember him fondly from the days when the NHL was relevant with Gary Thorne and Bill Clement (Clement Clement Hands of Cement). This during the 9-'s before the unnecessary expansion of the NHL, the dissolvement of the old divisions and when the NHL would be mentioned in the same breath as the NBA, MLB and NFL. Sure, he might be the equilivent of the Stephan A. Smith of the NHL. Flamboyant to the point of comedy, horribly incorrect in all of his predictions despite constant immersionn in the league and privleged access to players and organizations and hideous suits. Barry is a victim of this immense access that he will often jump from the coat tails of one superstar or hot team to another. Yes, that is infuriating since he is supposed to maintain an unbiased and objective analysis but he is generally harmless and often funny when taking in the right context. Plus, he is willing to admit his mistakes like his review of the Game 4 of the COL vs. DET series where he said, "Well I think they are sending a message to the so called experts that they are pretty good at what they are doing." I can appreciate that. I guess ultimately what it comes down to is the fact that I see Melrose as a positive advocate of the NHL and any amount of national face time that it can get, the better. He (for whatever reason) was chosen by ESPN to be the voice of the NHL and he does everything he can to champion a great sport and increase it's visibility. Wait 'til you see him and Don Cherry covering the games together now 'til the end of the playoffs on ESPN! This should be very entertaining! Seriously - Melrose had to pick us this time. After he was completely humiliated by "Avs in 6" there was nothing else for him to do. He does kind of have some manlove for Lidstrom. Anyhow, it is a bit odd that they all picked the Wings. I think it will be a long tough series - and the Stars like being the underdog. Wings in 6! Oh, and btw EJ Hradek picked the Wings to win the Cup before the season started - he's been with us all the way - no bandwagoning there.

RedRockit 0 Report post Posted May 7, 2008 (edited) I am shocked they all picked the Wings and Pens. I've been calling for that final for quite some time now. *last july to be exact* lol Anyways hope they both win this round. I've been calling for a Wings/Pens final for some long time now as well, mostly because I've been forced to watch a lot of Pens games this year (guy I was seeing is a PenFan), and I think Pens will win out in the East: they've got all the weapons and there's just that "feel" to the team ethic this year. Having said that, I can make everybody feel a lot better about Melrose with this: PenFan boyfriend predicted the Wings would lose against Nashville-- they didn't. He then predicted the Avs would win Round 2 (even after we won the first two games, he said we'd lose the next 4, citing history). After Game 3, he grudgingly conceded we'd PROBABLY (!) win the series, but that we'd lose to the Stars in the WCF. While I'm superstious enough NOT to predict anything this round, I WILL say this: PenBF has been SOO wrong so far, AND for the kicker: he dumped me for a skeeze who wouldn't know a hockey puck if it flew up her arse (even though I'm sure a few have). He's been wrong about EVERYTHING so far, both hockey and personal, and I'm pulling for a Wings/Pens final. It will be sweet if our Wings win it, and lovely vindication for me (if that's not being too selfish). Edited May 7, 2008 by RedRockit

Seriously guys, he's an analyst, this is his job. Who the hell cares if he picks us or not. Hockey games aren't decided by how other people pick games. Just my two cents.... is it jus me or is your memory just too short to see one important factor here: it's Mullet. not some John Smith in XYZ media but the very silent but deadly killer - Mullet. almost every single time he picked Wings to win something in last 10 years it was a kiss of death which eventually cost Wings the playoffs. it really isn't about why or how justified this guy is picking us. it's about the kiss of death. just as most fans hate to see a player on their team touching Presidents Trophy because it brings bad luck. the same way Mullet's pick has been disastrous for Wings. whatever happens I'd rather have my Wings fight without Mullet's curse. unfortunately for us he's been extremely succesful in destroying our chances. chrisdetroit 189 Report post Posted May 7, 2008 I don't know if this is good or bad http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/playoffs2008...tory?id=3383942 There are 12 seies in rounds 1 and 2. Here's how the "experts" did Melrose 6-6 Amber 8-4 Buccigross 8-4 Cohn 5-7 Hradek 9-3 None of them are great. Melrsoe is 6 and 6. Might a well flip a coin rather than listen to him. Incidentlt every one of the 5 ESPN experts picked the Wings and Pens.

Barry's stats as a Red Wing: Only 35 gp. 0g, 1a. 144 PIMs. Unless you count his Adirondack stats which only add another 13g and 26a, but also add a staggering 637 PIMs.
