Helm the Vet?

Did anyone notice the vertern play by Helm? It occured around the 10 minute mark of the third period. He moved Kronwalls broken stick slightly so it would potenially block a shot from the point. If anyone has a video of this could you please post it?

I love this kid. And hes from Winnipeg to boot!

Yeah I saw it but my only criticism is that he should've given his stick to Draper. He got close to him and a kid shouldn't hesitate to give his stick to someone like Draper when you're on D.

Disagree, Draper is better player without a stick and is probably more familiar with the situation.

This guy is just getting better and better. He is really starting to show what he can do when he is comfortable

If he gets bigger this offseason, there might be a pretty good battle for roster spots next camp.

I can't believe no one has mentioned the sirdrake factor yet...

Heads up move by Helm though, for sure. I really like what I've seen out of Helm this run. He's working hard, and has good speed through the zone. He's stayed on the roster for a reason, I'm guessing Babs likes what he sees too...

Ya I agree Helm has looked better as the playoffs have gone on. Today he showed that he has a great set of hands I think, and his confidence is really growing. It's crazy because he really didn't play a lot this year so he just came out of nowhere.

I think our future is starting to look bright with Helm, Abdelkader (who I REALLY look forward to seeing play) Kindl, Ericsson, Smith and Howard. If we can manage to get a top end forward prospect I would think we would have some of the best prospects in the league.

Is that a joke?

How many plays can any player in the world break up without a stick? Zero. All you can do is block shots. The better defensive players MUST have sticks.

Thank you for refreshing my memory of an all-time classic!

Have you never seen Draper control the puck with his feet and eat it in the corner?

 Pointless argument.

It would have been a better argument if it were a defenseman who broke his stick that Helm didn't give it to. I don't see a problem with any forward keeping his while another other forward has a broken stick.

Yes it would've. Doesn't matter though. Kris Draper is a very important defensive forward. That's why Drake ended up giving him his stick later and Draper broke up the play. But you guys probably didn't know that.

I watched the game, too, ya know. I did, in fact, know that. It doesn't make Helm not giving his stick to Draper a bad play though.

I think this is the point he was trying to make.

Draper is a better player without a stick than Helm is, therefore the Wings are better off to have Drapes without a stick than Helm.

Personally, playing d I might be a little bias, but it's more critical that a dman have a stick than a forward. However, given the option between one of my most defensively sound forwards and a forward who is average on d not having a stick, I'm taking the stick away from the guy who is more defensively sound. It's more than just blocking shots, it's getting in passing lanes, work in the corners, and puck pursuit.

In that situation, Helm needs a stick more than Draper.

Helm is absolutely fantastic, I love him. I thought he played great last night, he was flying out there! There was a shift with about 6 minutes remaining in the second period and Helm was out there for about 70 seconds, and in the final stages of his shift he went from one end of the ice to the other and got off a shot. Then he skated off, clearly exhausted. He is a terrific player though and he creates so many scoring chances. He is unbelievably speedy and back checks very well.

To think he started the season as a rookie in Grand Rapids who had about 10 points in the first 30 odd games. Now he looks comfortable playing in the Western Conference Finals. He will be a gem of a player and I can’t wait to see him play on a line with offensive dynamos in the future. For a small guy he sure does throw his body around and he isn’t afraid to go into congested areas. And he’s a smart player, he knew a check was coming his way so he braced for it as two Stars came crashing into him, but he braced for the hit and as a result one of the Stars players lost his footing and Detroit came away with the puck. He will be a GREAT player.

DID I NOTICE IT? I thought I was crazy. I had to hit rewind.

And the way he kept his HEAD UP ON THE PLAY while doing so? Hey. I mean....Hey.

I rewound TIVO to show it to my sister too. (I had to explain)

The way the stick lays after he moves it also blocks some passes to that point too, not just shots from.

Don't lose this kid Kenny. Little s*** moves like that, done consistently, win games and stuff. Smart hockey.

Thanks for the thread.

Helm must've personally set off the fire alarms or rang a loud siren in the Stars wing of their hotel room, b/c I saw them throw checks at him the most all evening. :P

Seriously, so far he's been one of the better behind-the-scenes feelgood stories I think this playoffs. As much as I'd like to see Maltby and McCarty get some more playing time due to their playoff experience, you just can't take Helm out right now. He's making little/no brainfart plays and he's doing a solid job of getting the 4th line some realistic offensive chances.

There were also a couple of plays where he either got hit in a corner, was digging in the corner, and then when the play went to the other end he was one of if not the first guy in the opposite corner. Speed is unfair and slow people like myself should be given some sort of head start.

This kid is a solid defensive player, and again I have to give credit to the poster (I forgot your name again, sorry!) who said this kid is like a Draper Jr. great wheels, great skater, solid positionally.

Thats what has impressed me most! As Mikey would say, "he must have tree trunks for legs to be able to fend off those big guy's hits"

This kid is great, I love him. He played the same way when he was playing for the MH Tigers. His speed is unreal and is so strong on his feet. Keep up the great work Helm, I know you'll get a goal here soon
