What are the requirements for a player to get their name on the cup?

I looked for info on this, and I can't seem to find anything. What are the requirements for a player to have their name engraved on the cup?? I was thinking about Downey and Kopecky, who have'nt played a game yet these playoffs. Are they eligible regardless because they played the in the regular season, or do you have to play a certain number of games in the playoffs to get your name on it??

Wasn't it forty regular season games and at least one finals game?

Obviously the team can petition to have players added.

It's something like that, except ~40 regular season games or at least one finals game. Kopecky will definitely get his name on there.

To have one's name engraved on the Stanley Cup certain requirements must be met. A player must have at least 41 games played with the club or one game played in the Stanley Cup Finals. However, in 1994 a stipulation was added to allow a team to petition the Commissioner for permission to have players' names put on the Cup if extenuating circumstances prevented them from being available to play.

That's how Kevin Hodson got his name on the Cup. He didn't play 40 games nor did he play in the Final, but he was an integral part of the team and the Ilitches and the team wanted his name on there. They petitioned to get it on and succeeded.

Mac will get his name on the Cup, even though he didn't play close to 40 regular season games - he played in Game 1 against Pittsburgh and by the rules, that's enough.

Can the team petition for Grigorenko to have his name on the Cup?

After all, in a way he's been part of our organization for years.

Ummm, I'm going to take a wild stab at it and say no. Just call it a gut feeling. <_<

Same with Jason Williams in 2002 as well. I don't remember exactly how many regular season games he played that season, but it was under 1/2 the season I think, but he filled in the playoffs for 9 games I think in the beginning of the playoff season as well as when Igor Larionov was injured, but didn't play in the SCF against Carolina at all. Nevertheless. he did a pretty solid job overall in the playoffs and the players pushed for his name on the Cup even though he didn't fulfill all the beginning requirements.

First, the team must win 4 games in the Cup final, not two. Too many people getting ahead of themselves here.

I don't think we're getting ahead of ourselves. Someone just asked a question out of curiosity and others have answered it, based on the rules and past history. That's all.

I thought you just had to be a full time rostered player.

What happens to the guys who do down early with an injury?

Or the clowns who come back like in Feb or March ala Selane?

That's where the petition part comes in. It's up to whichever team wins as to whether they want to petition the league to get the names of players who don't fill the games-played requirement on the Cup.

In the case of an injured player, like Kopecky, I think it's a slam-dunk that should the Wings win, they will ask the league to put his name on Stanley.

As for Selanne, if his team made it to the Cup final and he played in one game of the Final, it wouldn't matter how many games he played in the regular season, he would automatically be eligible to have his name on the Cup.

Red Wings HAVE TO win the cup. That's the only way I can see it here in Slovakia...and I really don't wanna go and look at it if Hossa brings it. Slovakia had SC only twice...by Bicek from NJ and Cibak from Tampa...that really sucks. But when I imagine cup 3rd time here...by player of Red Wings....Doooh :yowza:
