Parade Attendance? 1.4 MILLION?

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

What makes everyone here pros at estimating people on streets for parades? Whoever officially estimated has done it for YEARS and not just for victory parades, but the thanksgiving day parades as well. There is without a doubt enough space for over a million people, and don't say the whole population thing, because Detroit + it's metro area + Toledo + Windsor + Sarnia = something like 6.2 million people. Quit trying to degrade this great great celebration of victory and go back to bitching about Lilja, Samuelsson, or even Lang if you want to.

So what makes you the pro, then?

Where do you put a million people? And their cars?

It's not degrading the parade to call bulls*** on the numbers.

 You are just hell bent on this, aren't you?

It doesn't matter, does it? Maybe there were 200,000 people there. Maybe there were 6 million people there. Either way, the Detroit Red Wings won the Cup! Woot!

OK I Just got done counting the people from all the aerial shots and I got 1,329,678.5 people

So the number was just a little bit higher ok?!?!?

The .5 is counting the dead homeless guy that was along the side

No he wasn't dead, just looked and smelled like it...

People there are roughly10,000 and some change parking spaces in Downtown Detroit. The Joe holds 20,066. I'm calling BS on how many people can be packed in the Joe, since their is not enough places to put 20,066 cars. This also goes for the Tigers 41,782 and the Lions 65,000. Plus the square mile meter of the area were the Joe is at can barley hold 5,000 people too the root of the power 8.

:)

P.S. GO WINGS! 2007-08 Stanley Cup Champions!

where can you fit 1.4 million people and their cars in detroit you all ask?

Simple, you can't!

But you can and DID have people walking over 2miles to woodward, parking at the casinos... parking as far away as Fairlane Mall and 12oaks mall and taking shuttle busses into the city...

it is more than possible... its a reality

If there was 1.2 million in 2002, then it is definitely possible that there were 1.4 this time--there were much more people. In 2002 I showed up at 9:30 and was in the second row of people, this year I showed up at 7:30 and still was barely first row.

I believe those people just answered your questions. And yeah, actually, it is degrading to say there were a lot less people than what was said to be there. That's the exact same thing as saying the Wings don't have that many committed fans to go down their and support them. Are you really saying that? f***in' A, you might as well be one of the people saying that Detroit isn't Hockeytown if you're gonna say that.

Then I suppose every single media outlet, including the News, the Free Press, ESPN, AP, Channel 7, Channel 2, etc. etc. are bashing Hockeytown, and you should go write nasty letters of protest. All of them spoke of "thousands" or "hundreds of thousands", not millions. One article claims an outrageous figure among many that don't, and everyone's ready to fall head over heels believing it.

Use your head instead of just believing on face value everything you read.

There are TONS of Wings fans in Windsor. Population of over 200,000, and it seems the majority support either the Wings or the Leafs, some Habs fans too.

Everywhere you look there's Wings flags flyin around now.

I've lived here my entire life, and have been a HUGE Wings fan for over 20 years now.

I know heaps and heaps of people from Windsor, and surrounding areas who went to the Parade.

1.4 Million seems around what I figured would show up.

They've had over a million in previous parades. And like you guys have been mentioning. There are many people from outside Michigan who attended to show their support.

A couple hundred thousand? Are you kidding me?

That's almost an insult.

Tampa and Anaheim bring in 20,000 people, and getting ten times that is an insult?

Try something. Pick the year these photos were taken. They're two different years.

My guess is the first was this year and the 2nd was in 02?

Pictures were taken at different times of the parade day. first one was taken AFTER the parade down woodward and only so many 100,000's or thousands can fit in Hart Plaza for the rally... many MANY people leave after the parade (aka me as one of the many) and listen to the rally on the Radio heading home with the air on.

Also the pics don't even show the number of windows PACKED with people in a bunch (if not all) of the 20-30 floor building lining the entire parade route

2nd was '97 actually.

The one that was supposed to have 300,000 fewer than this year.

I still cannot find an online copy of the picture I'm thinking of, but it is roughly the same only with a much wider view. I have the newspaper somewhere, only not here.

Hart Plaza is packed and as you can see, so is Woodward. Jefferson is lined with people as well. I think the picture was taken after the parade and as the speeches on stage are going on, as people flood down Woodward toward Hart Plaza.

The point is to show that there's no way the '08 parade exceeded the '97 parade. Look how many people on Woodward; look how packed the plaza is. It's packed this year too, but not like '97, which was said to have 1.1 million. I'm sure both events had people staring out the windows.

I would guess about 600,000 for that first parade and about 200,000 this year.

How can anyone wager a guess or even speculate when you have two completely different shots, the only things similar in those two pics are:

they are both photos

both have people wearing red and white

They are not even the same angle, not that I care if it was 7 million or 7 thousand, but your photos do not make any kind of justification of either side possible.

Actually as Opie just pointed out above... they aren't even the same shot nor the same part of hart plaza.

If this years pic would have been a shot during the parade (as the 97 one was) and also the same angle you would have seen the crowds.

But who really cares... all i know I was there in person, it was HOT, it was PACKED and they were giving out all you can drink MONSTER... life was good!

:edit: no i don't think that is the case for the 97 one... i was there, woodward was just as scattered as this years when the speeches were going on.

True....sort of. But in the parts that overlap, Hart Plaza is packed in '97 and thinned out in '08.

See the tall twisty post? Surrounded by people in 97. Not in 08. See the street in front of the One Woodward building? Packed in 97. Not in 08. The intersection that was jammed with people in 97 is empty in 08. It's simply false that the photos have no areas in common.

It doesn't take a lot of deductive reasoning to guess that the rest of Hart Plaza in 97 is as packed as the part that does show.

Where is the stage in the 1997 picture? It’s not in the same spot as the 2008 picture.

The 1997 picture shows it during the parade and the 2008 shows it when people are arriving early to the parade.

In 1997 the police did not do crowed control around the fountain. That is why you see fans by the fountain. In 2008 the police did crowed control around the fountain, which is why you don't see fans by the fountain. But you should of known that since you were at both parades.

However, you are using inductive reasoning.

200,000? :ranting:

i'll take a hit of whatever you're smoking!

let it go already.

clearly you have an axe to grind and you're not winning much respect by carrying on about this nonsense.

I GUARANTEE THERE WERE OVER 500,000 THIS YEAR. as has already been pointed out, the same measurement

from previous years was used to calculate last week. they have this down to a science so let's leave this one to

the professionals and officially close this thread on a good note.

Im sure many of the people who were near Hockeytown Cafe didnt attempt to get near Hart Plaza and perhaps left the parade after the floats / trucks with the players had passed by.
