Comparing the Red Wings parade

In leu of our great parade and some comments I've heard recently, I wanted to start a serious discussion about how our parade measured up to other teams' celebrations/parades. I heard Rafalski's comments about this beating the "parking lot celebrations" they had in Jersey and someone on this site said the Duck had only 15,000 people at their "celebration." Does anybody know the real facts about this? Just wondering if anyone knows for sure how these celebrations and others really went down, in detail. Because if these other celebrations were really as lame as they sound, then can anyone really still say we are not hockeytown? Can anyone really bash us anymore?

From all I've seen nobody has had a turn out in a city for a Stanley cup celebration in a long time. 1.5 million people parade compared to all these teams doing parkinglot rall'y? no contest lol. every time a team does celebrate big the city seems to always get trashed (look at the habs after just winning one round). Proper to the people of Detroit!!

I think Anaheim had no more than 20,000 people, tops. Jersey's parking lot celebration in 2003 had the same attendance.

Carolina's parade (basically a lap around the RBC Center, then a rally) in 2006 had 30,000 people. Not sure how much Tampa Bay had in 2004, but I'm almost positive it was at least 100,000.

I thought I read somewhere that Tampa's Parade only drew about 20,000. But hey, if it was 100,000, that's not too bad. I've noticed that Tampa actually has some decent fans, and that the St. Pete Times Forum always seemes to be filled no matter how badly the Lightning are playing.

But hey - compare the parking lot "rallies" with basically a sold out arena crowd (no more than 25,000) to a parade downtown with reportedly over 1 million. Not Hockeytown? I laugh at you :sly:

Maybe just cuaght them at a bad time but i went down there in February to watch the tigers play in spring training and we caught a lightning game against the wild and there were no more than 12-13 thousand there. it was however quite loud in there.

After hearing all this crap the last two weeks about Pittsburgh having better fans than we do, selling more playoff tickets, having better tv numbers, and selling more merchandise, I wonder how many people Pittsburgh would have to a Stanley Cup Parade? 200,000 tops?

I think we proved to everyone again that we're Hockeytown USA. No USA city has anywhere close to the passion we do for Hockey. Actually I'm really impressed that we had more people come out in 2008 than our other 3 Championships with Yzerman, Shanahan, and Fedorov on the teams. I thought the numbers would be about the same as 1997, 1998, and 2002, or a little less. Excellent job HOCKEYTOWN USA

Probably the only NHL cities that would have more than 1.5 Million to a Stanley Cup Championship Parade would be Montreal and Toronto.

If Tor or Mon brought the cup back to Canada I am pretty sure most of that half of the country would be closed and at the parade.

You could easily see 2-3 million if the Leafs or Habs brought the cup back, especially since it has been a little while!!!

No doubt. There's about 7 Million people within an hour's drive to downtown Toronto. A Stanley Cup Parade down Young Street would be massive. I don't think the city could handle it.

Actually it was 20,000. I'll try to find a link.

Does Carolina even have 1.5 million people?

Avs are reported to have had around 200-250,000 in 2001. Even they are outdrawing the likes of Anaheim, Tampa, Carolina. Just another good reason there are certain locals that shouldn't have a hockey team. I kind of liked the SC Tampa team - but seriously 20,000 fans? Move those teams somewhere else Bettman - you idiot!

It wouldnt be down Yonge st it would follow the Santa Clause parade route along Bloor and University. Much wider streets with more boulevard to stand or sit along, but this is a silly comment anyway because they are no where close, maybe in the next few years they can have a "we made it to the playoffs parade".

Toronto would go nuts though, the city would stop, back in the mid 90s when Pat Quinn took them deep they would cheer all into the night along Yonge st, after they made it to the next round of the playoffs, it got a bit out of hand and annoying stupid stuff would happen like not letting a car full of girls past until they flashed you.

I was at the '96 Avs parade and I don't know exactly how many people were there but it was alot... I can tell you that. Even though it was their first year in the city they had awesome support from the fans. After all, they were Colorado's first Champions... the Broncos were soon after that and had just as good, if not better of a turnout.

I feel that overall, Denver is a good sports city. Particularly for the avs and broncos.

I live in Anaheim, not 10 minutes from the Honda Center, and I didn't even know the Ducks had clinched the cup till I listened to the radio the next morning, and that wasn't until AFTER they talked about Paris Hilton's jail sentence for 30 minutes.

I was talking to Mark Hartigan & his brother just after the Red Wings parade ended, and they were telling me how great Detroit was. Bonus points if you remember that Hartigan was on the Ducks last year. Of course, they mentioned the Anaheim "parade" was merely a rally in the parking lot. They were both just blown away by how many people turned out all along Woodward. Everyone was loving it, I walked myself down Woodward just before the parade started, all the way from Hockeytown Cafe to Hart Plaza, and indeed, there was people packed 10 deep along both sides of the street the entire way. My guess is we wont see a city top that unless its in Canada, I'm guessing Vancouver, Montreal, or Toronto would be insanity.
