Could Alexei Yashin be back with the New York Islanders?

According to Newsday, the Islanders have discussed the possibility of bringing their former captain back for one year after buying out the final four years of his $10 million contract.

Yashin's agent, Marc Gandler told Newday he spoke with Islanders' general manager Garth Snow on Thursday but no agreement was reached.

"We've had discussions," Gandler told Newsday. "But it's been very slow because I told them in the beginning how much I wanted. They're obviously not happy about that. But clearly, they missed him. They didn't have a first line last season."

Last season, centre Mike Comrie led the team in scoring with just 49 points while veteran winger Bill Guerin led the way in goals with 23.

Currently, the Islanders are paying Yashin $2.2 million per year over eight years for a total of more than $17 million. At the time of the buy-out, there were four years remaining on the deal worth $26 million.

Yashin, who is close with Islanders' owner Charles Wang, skated with Yaroslavl of the Russian League last season, scoring 16 goals and 27 assists for 43 points. In the playoffs, he added eight goals and six assists in 16 games and was named the best player of the postseason.

Yashin has an offer to re-sign with Yaroslavl so Gandler would like a decision from the Islanders before July 1.

"If we can't get anything soon, we're going to take the offer with Yaroslavl," Gandler told Newsday. "I think they're interested, but I'm not sure they're comfortable with the amount."

Heh.

They clearly missed his leadership last year.

They didn't even come close to making the playoffs last year, which as I remember they made two years ago when he was there.

I absolutely agree they are missing something, but Yashin is not the answer. They are already taking a cap hit on him, then to take another? That would be ridiculous. They should go after Hossa like every other team that is wanting. Besides that, they should go for young players like Vrbata, Huselius or even Malone.

Spectors - a prett reliable source - suggests that Yashin still wants what he wanted last year: 4 million.

Im sorry but thats just disgusting. For the mediocre player that he is today (all things considered), fleecing the Islanders for 6.2 million per year would be downright theft.

If he wants 4, they should give him 1.8.

They're already paying him 2.2 per year for nothing, what does he expect?

Well if he's such a pathetic player now why is he voted best player in the postseason in Russia? There's really no reason to hate this guy as much as people think it's cool to. It's not like he's twisting anyone's arm either, teams can pay guys whatever they want, if they didn't want to pay Yashin $10 million a season, they shouldn't have offered it. They know the rules, the players all take the money. And now again, people slagging Yashin because the Islanders are interested again...Alex sounds happy to stay in Russia, but also up for a return to the Isles. What's so wrong with that, huh?

They made the playoffs last season. Bashin` Yashin sucked so badly in that series that Nolan demoted him to the fourth line.

By last season, I meant the season that just expired, hence they didn't make the playoffs.

At least with Yashin, you know the team will make the playoffs, and he'll suck. Now without him, they can't even get that far.

And Nolan had to demote everybody last year, and likely will up until the time when he gets inevitably fired like every coach will.
