I think we all know Val is a very good young player, and i'm sure all of us would like to retain him if another team sends him an offersheet. However lets say someone has a case of the Kevin Lowe's and decides to offer Val an outrageous contract say 3.5 million plus. Now I like filppula, and think when hes in his prime he will easily be worth that as a solid second liner with defensive awarness capable of putting up 20g 40a numbers, however at this stage of his carrear if he was being offered that type of money id let him walk at just over 3.5 mill and take the 1st the 2nd and the 3rd. Would you? where would you cut the line in paying him and take the draft pick compensation?

Draft Pick Compensation

REVISED NUMBERS COURTSEY OF NORRISNICK

$863,156 or less None

$863,156 - $1,307,811 3rd round pick

$1,307,881 - $2,615,623 2nd round pick

$2,615,623 - $3,923,434 1st and 3rd round pick

$3,923,434 - $5,231,246 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round pick

$5,231,246 - $6,539,061 Two 1st's, one 2nd, one 3rd round pick

$6,539,061 or more Four 1st round picks

Draft Pick Compensation

_,773,442 or less ......... none

_,773,443 - 1,171,882 ..... 3rd round pick

1,171,882 - 2,343,764 ..... 2nd round pick

2,343,764 - 3,515,645 ..... 1st and 3rd etc.

3,515,645 - 4,687,527 ..... 1st, 2nd and 3rd

4,687,527 - 5,859,412 ..... 1st x2, 2nd & 3rd

5,859,412 or more ......... 1st x4

He's too young, has too much potential, and we're too good at drafting late to let him walk now for early draft picks.

This coming year and some of the young talent reminds me of players that were on the team awhile back....

Names such as Tim Taylor and Mike Knuble ring a bell...

Would be nice to get him locked up for a fair price right now and if he reaches certain expectations, bonuses kick in...

I do not see a team offering 3.5 million dollars for him as he played well, but not that well...

is it a crap team going after him if it was a team who's odds are that they will finish in the bottom 5 next year I might be inclined, next years top 2 guys are going to be big name players going one two.

That's the old table. Here is an estimate from one of the better capologists/cba specialists on another forum.

$863,156 or less None

$863,156 - $1,307,811 3rd round pick

$1,307,881 - $2,615,623 2nd round pick

$2,615,623 - $3,923,434 1st and 3rd round pick

$3,923,434 - $5,231,246 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round pick

$5,231,246 - $6,539,061 Two 1st's, one 2nd, one 3rd round pick

$6,539,061 or more Four 1st round picks

I guess I never really thought about the RFA and how it works. So help me out. Lets say Edm does offer him 3.5 million. Why does he HAVE to take it? Let's say the wings think he's worth 2 mil, he thinks he's worth 2.5. Does he HAVE to sign with Edm for 3.5? Doesn't seem fair that he would have to sign with a team he doesn't want too.

He dosent have to accept the contract offered... just hypothetically if Val was to accept the most money

Well, a lot of lower tier or younger players are signed with agents where they have no say in where they sign, just go out to the highest bidder (thus making the agent AND player the max money possible). For instance, Matt Cullen, when he 'signed' with the Rangers after Carolina won The Cup, he found out about the agreement (between NYR and his agent) when he was on his boat and described it as "I just found out i was traded".

Just an FYI since I didn't know it worked like that for a lot of the players til I met some 'inside' type people.

Personally, I don't think Val is leaving no matter what the offer. Realistically, the most he would be offered is 3-3.5 and that seems high for a 2 or 3 year contract. Kenny would be willing to offer that kind of money, maybe more to sign him to a 4 or 5 year deal (Kronner like). I'm sure a long term higher paying contract thats back weighted would be what holland is looking for.

Honestly, I'm not even worried about this. Penner got signed because there was reason for the Oilers to believe he would become a franchise scorer - he was just that in the AHL and had a really good rookie season. I don't think anyone's looking at Flip as a potential franchise player.

I heard something about this on NHL live yesterday - that agents can make all the calls for some players. I am curious is this just the contract some have signed with specific agents? It seems like each player would get the final say in whether they accept an offer or not - I guess in the case of RFAs they have to stay with their current team if an offer is matched, but in general this kind of baffles me.

IMO, most agents suck....

I really dont understand why everyone is so worried about Flip getting an offersheet. Hes not in the same group as Meszaros (although he had an off year this year), Perry, and Bouwmeester, among others.

By the way, all the Wings have to do is take him to arbitration if they cant get him signed by July 1st. Last time I checked, he was arbitration eligible. And players cant recieve offersheets if theyre slated for arbitration. Not to mention that gives the Wings extra time to sign him.

A little off topic, but I loved the way he finished in the finals. When the playoffs started I was not happy and thought he was a no show with all those missed opportunities, some open nets almost. However, he kicked ass starting in Dallas and played his ass off with the Pens. I thought he was fantastic. And that "Bobby Orr" goal - man, that was one of the best SCF highlights ever.
