NHL vs. The Rangers

Rate this topic

Why should we, the fans, care about this? The Rangers management wants to keep more of their profits in-house, and the league wants to share in those profits like with all the other teams. Who cares how the money gets divvied up, besides the owners?

There are several key elements in play here...

1. Both parties should have handled this behind closed doors in order to minimize the damages to the leagues already fragile image.

2. How long will the upper echelon teams continue to maximize profit margins only to see their $$$ divied up in a league mandated welfare system. I give credit to MSG for attempting to minimize the damages. People forget that many of the large market ownership groups get sandwiched by the NHLPA and the league itself.

3. While this may not seem to be an important issue on the surface - it is actually a large indicator of discontent within the ranks and makes one wonder whether or not the Ranger's have support from any of the other owners.

oh thats right, its the CBA, communist basturd agreement. the one where popular teams and well run teams cant really prosper and reinvest like to make an even better product for their fans to watch. what were we thinking....what is this the land of the free or something? is this a free market? well not anymore...BOO@bettman and this dayamn CBA .let make sure we dont let the supported teams prosper according to their fanbase's interest, and lets make sure all the empty expansion arenas DONT shut down or move to better cities

too bad hte automotive industry doesnt operate under a CBA, maybe we'd still have the edsel, AMC and others rolling around even if noone wanted them bahhh, or how about when burger kings sales go down, WHO CARES LETS MAKE MCDONALDS pay for them to stay open and be just as profitible, even if the demand isnt there, nor is the same quality product theoretically of course...fast food gag lol......socialism makes me sick. living in canada i see it all the time...and now its ruining hockey

Actually, revenue sharing is NOT a part of the CBA and is not really related to it.

The NHL is not based on any kind of a free market in the first place. It is essentially a trust (as in violating the anti-trust laws) that can operate only under the "sports league" exception to those laws. The NHL restricts competition, restricts free movement of labor etc.

So why would the redistributing of the profits earned in that cooperative arrangement be out of line?

So there's a provision that says that teams can't legally challenge any NHL rule? Stupid, just stupid.

What in the world would make the NHL think they can do a better job with promotions than people who are actually involved day-to-day with the team.

This whole situation is a piece of s***, just like Bettman.

Has Bettman been reading "How to Make Enemies and Alienate People" again? I would've thought the owners would be the only people in the world who wouldn't boo the man... until now.

"At the end of his letter, Bettman noted that the NHL constitution also prohibits league members from resisting or trying to prevent termination in the league through the courts."

Wrong gary..............They do have the right. Under normal business law, Whoever owns the Team. it's logos and it's copyrights owns the show. I'd like to see him win a court battle on that.

Ya think the owners are gonna rally around that ****** now?

This is fantastic!!!!!!! Bettman's "employers" are the oweras group. If he is successful at upsetting the owners he will be loking at a pink slip. Personally, I can see the owners rallying around MSG just to protect their own interests. This is gunna be good.

I tend to think that Bettman is unfairly blamed for a LOT of things and tend to defend him from a lot of the "thanks a lot Buttman, you $&!@" kind of stuff that's almost Pavlovian in response to anything negative surrounding the NHL or the Wings.

That said, this is absolutely beyond defense. Not so much the league's original position, which I happen to agree with, but their heavy-handed response now. Acting irrationally with an owner/ownership group isn't really the best thing for his job security either.

If you had to make a list of all the people in the history of the world who were horrible, dastardly and despicable.......Bettman would be below Hitler.

Perhaps a tad overly dramatic here don't you think? Or does this demonstrate the average American's perception of world history? No no, if taken in a more balanced historical context of Evil, Bettman ranks well above Hitler, and ranked just below Caligula. Come on people, get it right! :-)

Comparing bettman to Napoleon is unfair...Napoleon was a charismatic inspiration leader that managed to get the cheese eating surrender monkeys to conquer most of europe....Betmann reminds me much more of oswald cobblepot - aka Danny Devito's take on the Penguin....
