marcaractac 3,963 Report post Posted June 25, 2008 Awesome. Good to see he is sticking around. Perfect role for him to be a part time player. Sure he didn't look so good in the playoffs, but I bet anything he wasn't fully recovered from his leg injury. Either way, he will continue to be an excellent mentor for the kids we got coming up this season. Our D remains in good hands!!

This is so stupid to bring a 'has been' back into the fold. You've got young legs in the system, they should be on the team. Chelios should retire he is just taking up a roster spot at this point in his career. What a F_ _ _ ing joke!!!

NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted June 25, 2008 NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! Meaning a discount seeing as that it'll be a two-year deal, for a solid depth bottom pairing Dman that can fill in for injuries and block shots. Not bad if the price is right. Not bad if the price is right. Thinking the same thing, 2 years around a mil a year, not too bad for a defenseman who while does make his fair share of mistakes (what 4-6 dman doesn't) blocks shots, can hit, played well in the SCF. If the price is right, very good depth signing. Listen we are all hoping Ericsson and Kindl will be the BOMB, however they are not guaranteed, yes Babs said Ericsson was ready last year and I trust his opinion but having guys like Lilja and Cheli around proved useful last year when the top pairing was Lilja and Lebda for a stretch. The way this team is coached and set up, defenseman are like Starting pitchers in baseball, just when you think you have too many, you don't have enough. You bring them in one, two at a time. I'd like to see Helm up here next season, but who knows if that'll happen. Leino, Abdelkader, allt he other forwards can wait. Howard should be brought up by sheer necessity. As for defense, we've got Meech, Quincey, and Ericcson. I think Ericcson stays down another year, and it'll be Meech being called up, with Quincey being traded. Balance, people. Teams would kill to have a player like Chelios mentoring their kids. Not bad if the price is right. I totally agree. There is no reason to not sign him. He is an excellent fill in for an injured D-man. This will be a good deal to get done. People fail to realize that this a solid locker room veteran, that is willing to take a backseat to some young talent, and play a limited schedule. Some on here are way to critical about small pieces of this giant puzzle. Edit: clarity Edited June 25, 2008 by miller76
DatsMyWings13 4 Report post Posted June 25, 2008 I have mixed feelings about Chelios returning. His experience and knowledge is great but his play has started diminish and I think he is taking up a roster spot that someone else deserves. If we didn't have a such a log jam at the position I would be very happy to have him back but at this point I would rather see him retire.
Dabura 12,232 Report post Posted June 25, 2008 He still has value as a third-pairing guy or reserve. And mentor.

They just assume that he's too old, and therefore is lazy and sucks. I wish we could have seen just how much better Jiri Fischer would have improved, because I loved watching him pair with Chelios in 2002. That said, I absolutely love the rare occasions where Chelios and Lidstrom are paired together.

Chelios should retire he is just taking up a roster spot at this point in his career. What a F_ _ _ ing joke!!! Chelios works out like a freak. Sure he's not like he was in his 20s and not as fast, nobody was. But him in his mid-40s is a lot like veterans in their mid/late 30s. He hasn't got top line minutes in forever and shouldn't, he'll be in a reserve role. There is no harm in this, he can mentor one or two of the younger guys into more of a full time role like has been suggested already.

Dabura 12,232 Report post Posted June 25, 2008 (edited) We have plenty of "solid locker room vets" Not along the blue line. Without Chelios, our only veterans on the back end would be Lidstrom and Rafalski, neither of whom plays the kind of game Cheli plays, and neither of whom could offer the kind of insight and lessons Cheli can offer. And a lot of that stuff is stuff you have to see put in action (i.e., done in games, not drawn on a clipboard). I have no problem with this signing. If he falters, his playing time can be given to Meech or Quincey or Ericsson. Edited June 25, 2008 by Dabura
