DaWingsin071 4 Report post Posted June 26, 2008 Well apprently Mr. Bouwmeester is not happy in Flordia according to thefourthperiod.com. WHat do you think of him? I think he would be a great pick up to put with Kronner if Stewie leaves. His price is at 2.25 Mil. And again he is young. Give him 3 Mill. Thoughts?
skacore 2 Report post Posted June 26, 2008 I'm not really good at putting prices on players but from what I've seen of Bouwmeester he is really, really good. Incredible speed, contributes offensively but still so solid defensively, not overly physical but is great at playing the body to break up a play. I'd think he's a 4.5-5 million dollar player. Really quiet guy you don't hear much about and in my opinion so underrated.

Wings_Dynasty 267 Report post Posted June 26, 2008 If he leaves they might as well move the franchise. They will be in last place by a LOT. I wouldn't mind seeing him on the Wings. He is a smart player and good with the puck. He would be a good replacement for Stu if he leaves. But he will want good money, probably more than what Stu will want. Doggy 130 Report post Posted June 26, 2008 Dion Phaneuf recently signed a 6 year $6.5M/yr extension. Jay Bouwmeester is the better defenseman of the two. I'm a big fan of Bouwmeester and hate Phaneuf but no. Dion is the better Dman. No question.
norrisnick 1 Report post Posted June 26, 2008 Don't get blinded by the big hits and big goals. Jay is significantly better defensively. He's been stuck in a hockey abyss for his entire career thus far, but Bouwmeester is elite. He had an off year this past season, but if given a choice between the two it's Jay without a hint of doubt in my mind.

egroen 384 Report post Posted June 26, 2008 (edited) Not as flashy as Phaneuf, but better defensively, and will be in the norriss running once Lidstrom retires. I'm thinking he will pull in $5 million right now. Maybe as much as $6 million. Love to have him, just not very realistic. Isn't that the standard trade proposal for any elite player the Wings don't have?
stud_defenseman 1 Report post Posted June 26, 2008 (edited) I would seriously make a move for him if we weren't already one of the best defensive teams in the league. Bringing him in would give us 4 defensemen who could possibly be a number 1 or number 2 on every team in the league. There will be another team who will pay him the big bucks though, so oh well. edit: so why does he want to leave anyways, is this at all a credible source, or is the writer just guessing? It wouldn't surprise me, especially if the writer is Canadian. A lot of Canadian writers are very naive to think that it is the dream of eveyr young player to come play for one of their beloved Canadian teams. p.s I am Canadian myself and a lot of the biased writing still seriously annoys me. Hank 0 Report post Posted June 26, 2008 He is due for a big raise, he will get much much more that 3 million. What he said. There'll be a lot of teams willing to throw a grosse amount of money at this kid. Defenseman take longer to develop than forwards and I think Bowemeester could end up being a Norris candidate before his days are done. The thing about him is, he could be so much better offensively if he played in a system where they let him take some chances. If he were a Wing, I'm sure he'd double his point production in a year or two. But someone will give him a deal for around $5M/year or more. Think 5 years, $27M. Reds4Life 51 Report post Posted June 26, 2008 Long term, I would rather have him than Hossa -- but I still think neither is very realistic. I agree. Bouwmeester has star potential, he could become elite defenceman in Detroit. It would be awesome to see him play for the Red Wings.
Glubki 17 Report post Posted June 26, 2008 Bouwmeester @ 4-5 years for 20-25 million vs. Brad Stuart for 3 years @ 9.75 million.... That is a no brainer... Bouwmeester would leapfrog Kronwall into the number 3 spot. It will never happen but this makes 10 times more sense to me than Hossa or Rolston...
Andy Pred 48 337 Report post Posted June 26, 2008 If this is true about Jay, then this is an opportunity that the Wings must take a look at. He could well be the guy we need to take over from The Capt on a long term basis. Yes we are loaded on D but we could off load 2-3 guys in the deal. Panthers will want top $ for Jay so the usual crap on here about what we offer isn't gunna work. We need to offer some serious talent to land him if the Wings are looking at the option. So who do you look at? Holmstrom, Lebda and Kopecky ? Cleary, Meech and Ritola ? Many will baulk at the thought of losing Hommer or Cleary but your gunna have to lose a main guy as well as other assets to get someone like Bouwmeester into the fold. Cap space will need to be made as well, both of these combo's will free up $3m+. Jay will want more than that, and the Wings could offer more down the line. Lids may well retire in 2 years, the Wings will have his salary cap to then play with. Offer Jay a 5 year deal, 2 years at $4m and then 3years at $6m, he may see the benefits of it long term. The biggest problem would be what the Panthers want for him. Still we can dream, if we kept hold of Brad too, the D would be sick. Lids & Raffi Kronner & Brad Jay & Big E'son Lilja & Cheli Won't happen but the thought is mouthwatering..

I find that many here have unrealistic expectations as to the Wings` ability to utterly build a dream team. Bouwmeester is a great defenseman. He led all defensemen---and all players in general---in ice time last season, and he's a great two-way player. He is a #1 defenseman. Given the dearth of good blueliners available this summer, he will get $4-5m minimum.

egroen 384 Report post Posted June 26, 2008 If Stuart walks, and Holland is able to get one or two free agents on one-year deals, I would hope he makes a strong push for Bouwmeester when he becomes a free agent next year. Cheaper than Hossa, and more valuable, IMO. I would consider trading for him this year, as well. Filppula + Kindl + picks, prospects? What do you want? That is the guy you want firmly in place here when Lidstrom retires.

Teams are going to be trying to mimick the Red Wings' strategy this year. Hopefully it backfires on all of them. Could a team like LA or Phoenix afford him? I can see them creating a pretty good defense with Stuart-Bow or Jovo-Bow. And picking up Bow would probably be the final piece to a puzzle in making them 8-spot challengers.
