Wings Petitioning to Have Meech's Name on the Cup

He'd never seen the Stanley Cup before it was presented to the triumphant Red Wings this spring in Pittsburgh, he said.

Meech wasn't in uniform that night, though he was on the roster. In fact, he did not dress for any playoff games, which means the National Hockey League will not inscribe Meech's name on the cup.

The Red Wings are petitioning the NHL to add Derek's name, said Dennis Meech: "All the guys came to him after they won the cup," he said.

I think he deserves it he was a big part of the team when they went through all the injuries not only playing defense but forward as well here's hoping that he gets his name on the cup :beerbuddy:

I think the regular season requirement for getting your name on the Cup is being in the lineup half the season.

Some people on here had the impression that it was 40 games since one of the sportscasters during the finals stated they needed one game in the finals or 40 regular season games, but that in fact is incorrect. It is 41, as that is half the regular season.

Yep, basically, if a team can prove that a player made a valuable contribution to the Stanley Cup winning team he is allowed to have his name put on the cup. Jason Williams had his named added in 2002 after the Wings won, last year Parros and Hartigan had their names added.

Wow, people's hate for a select few (Lilja, Hudler, Samuelsson, Lebda) is mind boggling. It's like you just want to complain about something. Lebda played extremely well, especially for a #6 defenseman, in the Conference Finals and the Stanley Cup Finals. He was late on a change once or twice, but overall, he made good decisions and good passes. His speed played a big factor as well. People need to stop hating. Yeah, the guy isn't the greatest defenseman in the world. He's a #6 guy who plays his role, IMO, very well.

Now, I can understand the people who want Lebda gone, because they like the potential of a Meech or Quincey. That's different.

I guess Jason Williams name on the SC in 2002 for playing 9 games in the playoffs but none in the finals (and not enough in the regular season) just magically appeared then.

Good that they are making this gesture. Meech played a very important part of keeping the defense honest and respectable with more responsibility/playing time when there were all these injuries in February.

Lebda played OK in the Cup finals, because Lids Rafi Stewie and Kronner were whoring the d-minutes, anyone can look ok when they are only getting 8minutes a game.

Honestly the only player I really dislike on the team is Lilja. But I will jump on any opportunity to make fun of anyone. They're pro hockey players, I'm sure they can handle it. Besides, it makes the forums a more entertaining place to visit.

As for Meech, honestly I don't see why he should get his name on the cup. He didn't meet the quota, and the games he did play, personally, I didn't see him as a significant driving force for the outcome of those games. He played well, yes, but we still would've won the cup if he hadn't played a single game. Don't get me wrong, I love this kid and he has tons of potential, but looking at it as objectively as possible, i just don't see any real argument for his name to be on the cup.

No. All of our defensemen need to be so good that they'd be in the top two of most teams. We will not tolerate imperfect players.
