Sundin still doesn't know what the !@$% he's doing

As much as I like Mats as a player, I am certainly glad that the Wings didn't waste time for him to make up his friggin' mind.

Part of me almost suspects, however, that he may have really wanted to become a Wing, but got beat to the punch by Hossa, and is now out of luck. Almost, that is.

...well, if he wants to win a Cup I believe Holland has a spare 500,000 to 1,000,000 laying around, but that's about it. The rest belongs to Filpulla. (of course that means McCarty cannot hang around anymore... darn...)

Damn you're obsessed with McCarty. You bring him up in every thread.

...would you not rather have Sundin than McCarty? I would. If Sundin would sign here for McCarty's money, then BYE BYE McCarty...

...oh, and he sucks, he's a waste of roster space and is only here cause he has friends on the team. Downey earned that spot, Downey deserves that spot, NO WAY McCarty should get that spot before Downey. Downey should have played in the playoffs, not some washed up loser who only got back because he knows someone. How fair is that?

...I know Sundin won't come here for 500,000 but if he would and we had to choose between him or McCarty...

...exactly...

We don't need more playmaking centers. We need more tough guys capable of throwing their bodies around and watching the backs of our top players, especially now after a Cup win and with Drake gone. Between having McCarty for when we need him and having Sundin on our team for 1/3 of the season only to be carried off in a stretcher because we don't have anyone looking out for him on the ice, the former seems like less a waste of money.

Sundin is not a "playmaking center" who is likely to end his season "on a stretcher." This isn't Val Filppula we're talking about; Sundin is a reliable, durable, 6'5 goal-scoring machine who works his ass off every shift of every game. McCarty himself would probably laugh at the thought of him "watching Mats' back."

So is Zetterberg, a player who has never once played a full season. Somehow Sundin is miraculously invincible to injury or aggression from opponents, much less if he plays on a team where he's going to have a bulls-eye on his back from start to finish?

If you want to think that the Wings can coast through 2008-09 with virtually no enforcers anywhere on their team, go nuts, but I see a very long version of last March happening if that winds up being the case

Calm your ass down, will ya? I never said Sundin is impervious to wear and tear and injury in general. My point was, in short, that your talk about Sundin needing protection from an enforcer like McCarty (who's not even much of an enforcer at this stage in his career) because he's a fragile playmaking center is laughable. The guy is big (BIG) and tough, and he battles night in and night out. If Corey Perry wants to start s*** with him, fine -- Mats can just sit on him.

w.e why do people care so much what he is doing. let him take his time, he is not obligated to do something within the first few weeks of the free agency.

Sundin will announce his intentions on August 1st.

As in, "I will or will not be playing hockey next year for Toronto or any of the other 29 teams." [/Press Conference]

Honestly, Sundin owes nothing to anyone. He can take as much or as little time as he needs determining what is best for him, his family and his future. The only problem is his window for winning that elusive Cup is shrinking by the day.

August 1st is the date that many Sweden NHL players start training hard for training camp. Mats wanted to start with them if he was going to play. Hence the Aug 1 date.

He has a Fiancee, no kids, no home in Toronto; just has had an apartment all these years. He is reported to have 100million dollars in the bank. How different would it be to have 113 million than 100 million? The way he seems to spend money, probably not that different.

He has stated that he wants to be a difference maker on a cup team, not just tag along for the ride.

The unfortunate part of it all is that, for the money he's apparently looking for (despite having cash in the bank), there don't seem to be any sure-fire Cup contenders that can afford him now. Fringe competitors and teams that may or may not make the postseason, sure. A list of teams that could realistically afford Sundin right now:

Minnesota, St. Louis, Florida, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Carolina, Columbus, Buffalo, Vancouver, Colorado, New York Islanders, Nashville, Phoenix, Atlanta and Los Angeles.

Out of all those teams, Montreal is probably the best bet, but that's not saying much.

Yet his agent said just yesterday that August 1 was not the deadline and that he'll make up his mind sometime this month.

Vancouver Sun

Sundin's so-called "soft deadline" of Aug. 1 is now inoperative. There will be no decision today, according to Barry, and maybe no decision next week either.

"There is no Aug. 1," Barry said. "He set his own kind of deadline to make a decision in August but he's not there yet. There's not much more you can say. He needs more time."

As for this comment, edi basically summed up my thoughts exactly.

Ha, that bit from the Vancouver Sun sounds EXACTLY like what Scotty Needavacation™ was doing.

"His deadline to decide is July 1st. We're not going to have a repeat of last year."

July 1st rolls around...

"Deadline? What deadline? There's no deadline. He can take all the time he wants. We never set a deadline."

From what I heard, he will be deciding in August, because if he is playing, he will be attending training camp for sure.

With the Hawks hiring Bowman I wonder if they'd make a pitch for Sundin?

Sundin would have to pay the 'Hawks if he wanted to play there, considering they're at or over the cap already.

At this point it no longer matters. Either he will go to a crappy team or retire. IMO the contenders are:

Detroit, San Jose, and Dallas

Somebody in the East will make the finals and lose but really will not have a chance - Montreal, Pittsburgh or maybe Philly.

So if he went to the Habs, we may see him in later rounds in the playoffs, otherwise his season will end by the end of April. It's hard to get excited about him playing but not having an impact.

He had his chance to play for a contender and make a difference but he decided to wait and all the contenders moved on....

Detroit has less than a million left under the cap. San Jose has just shy of $1.4M. Dallas is at about $1.7M. Doubt any of those three will contend for Sundin's services (and Detroit's not even interested according to Sundin's agent).

 - didn't realise the Hawks are spending that much.

Yeah they have Huet at 5.625 and Khabi at 6.750 that is 12.375, right there.

A lot of loot tied up in the net!

Un ******* believeable. We won the President's Trophy AND the Cup, added a top-notch back-up goalie then turned around and wrapped up our rental player plus added Marian ******* Hossa and people are still bitching about not enough "enforcers".

Christ, that same tired old argument is getting old.

You miscomprehended his post. He was talking about them being contenders for the cup, not Sundin
