Namingway 146 Report post Posted August 5, 2008 There might've been a topic somewhere along the same lines as the one I'm about to post but I thought I'd mention it since today is exactly two months since we won the Stanley Cup. We've seen big trades and many contracts being signed thus far, we've seen some teams improving their rosters and others decrementing it. So what are your opinions on who will go up and who will go down next season? I have a feeling that the Blackhawks are going to grab the 7th or 8th spot at the end of the season. They have talented young legs and some solid goaltending now. I'll also be expecting a great Winter Classic game from them as well and hopefully a new rivalry since we all know that the Avs haven't been able to fill that role. I think the Ducks are going to run into a little trouble. We all know that they're a playoff team and everything but I just have a feeling they're going to have a harder time next season. I went to this Chinese restaurant I only go to about once a year and that's what I got in my fortune cookie. Just thought I'd share it with you guys. It'd be nice to see a rivalry goin' with them. I wonder how that'll turn out? And dude, that fortune cookie thing is amazing. You should frame the fortune or something. Chunkylover 26 Report post Posted August 5, 2008 Tampa Bay is kind of like the Kool-Aid pick that the Capitals were in the playoffs last year. There's a lot of hype surrounding them, which is good for them. Who knows what the heck will happen in the Southeast Division? All anyone can predict is that one team from that division will make the playoffs. I think Buffalo will get better at the expense of the Ontario teams who got somewhat worse. I don't think the Atlantic will be the Eastern Conference that it was last year. I'm guessing Philly will take it. Phoenix could surprise everyone or they could underperform per usual, which wouldn't be a surprise. I won't rule out Anaheim, but the fight for the Pacific lead will be between Dallas and San Jose. Both teams now have good coaches. Chicago and Edmonton will probably be the 7 and 8 seeds this year, which could suck for us since we had our worst records against them. However as with the Southeast, who knows what will happen in the Northwest division? In summary, my teams to watch out for: Anaheim, Chicago, Dallas, Edmonton, San Jose. CHICAGO especially after what they did to us last year, now with Campbell, and Huet, not to mention what the kicked our aces with... Toews, Sharp, a healty Hav, and Langers. I am not saying we are going to loose the division but this Chicago team is starting to get scary. I think they might go to the second round in the 7th or 8th seat. Or i could be completely wrong, they could pull a tigers season. Either of the two its going to be an interesting season. As for some of what I read; LA - Are you kidding me. They could put 2 bricks in net and do better than LaBarbero. I thought trading Camellero was utterly idiotic. The only upside is the trade to get Johnson will go down as the steal of thepast 10 15 years AND firing crawford is always a good thing. Phoenix - They did and they will ... SUCK. Gretzky is as much a coach as Avery is a lady byng candidate. CBJ - not sold on them doing any better than last season. Blues - As long as Legace is in net, and KaChunk skating around, that team has no future. I like Murray as a coach, but this team needs some really big moves and to dump the old guard. Yeah those have been my exact same thoughts ever since the Hawks got Campbell and huet not to mention how they got Bowman with them to rub it in. I am not saying that they will definitely be making the playoffs but I think they have a good chance. They did get pretty close last year as they tied Edmonton with 88 points for 9th (Nashville was the 8th seed with 91) We should be seeing a better Blackhawks team that we haven't seen in a good while. Chicago has undoubtedly been on the rise for the past couple years, and they've molded themselves into a competitive team, full of young prospects and trusty vets, much like the Red Wings have structured themselves (just not to the same degree). With Toews and Kane, they've got the youth and speed, not to mention skill. With Huet and Khabibulan, they've got solid goaltending. The Stars have slowly been building over the years and are finally looking ready to take a stab at a cup... they're not the biggest, strongest, or best, but they've formed a solid core of players and they all play well together. They made some waves in last year's playoffs. The only other team that I'll be watching (besides my Red Wings) is the Tampa Bay Lightning. They re-signed Lacavalier and Martin St. Louis, Radim Vrbata, Olaf Kolzig in net, Steve Stamkos-- 1st round, 1st picked draft pick this year, Gary Roberts and Mark Recchi, Vaclav Prospal, AND Ryan Malone... they made some big moves this off-season. Screw The Mullet, but the Lightning have made some pretty drastic changes... and their team looks great right now. Other than that, I doubt any other teams will make that big of a splash. The offense looks "great" right now, but they completely neglected their defense. It's gonna be a long season for Ollie and TB's only shot of making the playoffs is to score 7 goals every night, because that defense is gonna give up 6.
