eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted August 13, 2008 This seems like a good set of parameters. And I agree with the list. To which I will add: Markov I don't know if I can agree with Markov...simply because a lot of defensemen who made the kind of money he was looking for last season are not better than him. While he wasn't worth it from the Wings, it's hard to say it's not fair value given that guys like Brewer who are no better make more. Bertuzzi Bertuzzi left because he wanted length to his deal; he would have signed the $2m deal Holland offered if it included a second year. Schneider Schneider was a UFA and took the best offer on the first day; it came from the defending champs. That's not greediness. Paul Coffey Coffey was traded away, but didn't have a bad attitude and was never really selfish. He made some bad defensive plays but that's not the same thing. Bob Essensa He was shipped out for sucking, but doesn't qualify under the paramaters I laid out.

Shockwave180 0 Report post Posted August 13, 2008 Ill still never understand the schneider hatred here... The dude had one last run at cash before hangin em up. He didnt piss on Yzerman's shoe or anything. If anything if you dislike Schneids you should dislike Hossa for a few of the same reasons. Yeah, yeah... Hossa wasnt there very long but the idea remains the same. Loose the cup to a team, then sign with said team for the next seaon. Apples, I'd like you to meet Apples. If you like the Hossa pick up, then let Schnieder be. He didnt disgrace the team, or say anything bad about us. He just had bigger fish to fry. You going to hang Assistant Coaches for the same reasons too? /Baffled This. I'm a little biased, I guess, because I met Schneider before Game 6 of the Conference Finals last year. He was incredibly nice and gracious, and posed for multiple photes (with his red cast on his wrist). I do think we were slightly better off without him, as things turned out. But let him be. donfishmaster 62 Report post Posted August 13, 2008 J Will Markov Manny I don't get the Legace hate. Yeah, he choked, but I don't think anyone was more pissed at him than he was himself. He had a very, very good career with the Wings and I would have loved to have had him playing top-form with Osgood this year. I don't think his leaving was a slight by any stretch of the imagination. dobbles 252 Report post Posted August 13, 2008 i don't see why people keep justifying why certain players left. i don't see that being mutually exclusive with why anyone is glad they didn't win a cup with the wings. i can be glad that schneider never won a cup with us while still understanding that he was trying to get one last big payday. Slave 31 Report post Posted August 13, 2008 any of the people named i would have been happy for if they were on our team and we won, but i guess you are saying players you are glad were not on the team this year that were in previous years. Hatcher.. never liked him big slow lumbering neanderthal, when he got schooled by iginla i couldn't wait for him to be gone. Sopel.. was kinda looking forward to him the red jersey but the class he didn't exhibet when just not showing up and then signing with the hawks i hope he never gets a cup. Guys i kinda wish were still here for this run: Matt Ellis And guys i am glad won the cup this season...obviously the entire team but mostly Lidstrom, Z, Huds, Cleary and Lilja...Lilja you ask? yup just glad he in a roundabout way got redemption for last year

Icer 0 Report post Posted August 13, 2008 Bob Probert, Petr Klima, John Chabot, Joe Kocur, Darren Veitch and Darren Eliot. The team was in the Conference Finals for the second time in two seasons and these idiots had to go out drinking the night before game 5 in Edmonton. The team fell apart after the incident and it took the Red Wings almost a decade to make it back on top. I seriously think the team could've contended for a couple of Cups in the early 90s if they had their priorities straight. Kocur redeemed himself during his second stint with the Red Wings but I was happy to see the rest of those idiots go.
StevieY9802 6 Report post Posted August 13, 2008 How so? I really fail to see how there was any discontent or bitterness from either him or managment in him leaving. He felt it was time to move on and was part of the Wings past and not their future, both the Red Wings and Shanahan are for the better for him moving on and establishing a few decent years in a new place in New York. This is how I feel. And people need to remember that Shanny would have tied the Wings down with $4mil per for a couple years if he would have stayed and maybe handcuffed them in making some of the moves they made. He did a good job when he was here but it was time to move on. I was glad he left because like he said he wasn't part of the future and it was time to give the kids a chance. And he scored a whopping 3 goals from 03-06, not exactly someone I was ready to throw 4mil at just from what he had done before that. I also had no problem with Schneider when he was here or how he left. I think you saw how important he was when he was out in round 3 in 07. 0 for 7 on the PP in game #5 I think. And him leaving was good because they got Rafalski for what $250k more than what Schneider got with the Ducks? Good trade off if you ask me. I have no problem with anyone that didn't win the cup. If Lang or Bert or anyone would have won it I would have said thanks for helping out.

Chunkylover 26 Report post Posted August 13, 2008 This is a pretty negative topic. Almost too negative for me to participate in. I guess maybe Calder since he was kind of a chump last year. On the flip side I'm happy that guys like Cleary, Lebda, Lilja, and Samuelsson will get their names on the Cup for the first time considering they'd be marginal NHLers if not for Detroit and the lockout. I'm happy to see Mac and Cheli win it again just because.

Also, Cleary could be a top 6 forward for several teams. That's not a marginal player if you ask me.

octopusonice 0 Report post Posted August 13, 2008 I don't get the Shanahan bitterness either. It was a good move for both the Red Wings organization and Shanny. The Red Wings went in another direction, and Shanny got another opportunity to play in a place that he wanted. There was not, nor should there be, any resentment about moving on. Be thankful for everything Shanny did for the Red Wings during his time here. Changing uniforms doesn't automatically make a player greedy or useless. Coz i never saw him in a Wing jersey but he ll play for my hometown swiss team this year! Mowers scored one of the most beautiful goals in the regular season a few years ago against Calgary. I think it was even more spectacular coming from Mowers. Other than that goal, I really have no other memories of Mowers with the Red Wings.
Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted August 14, 2008 The 4 year/40 million deal wasn't the only deal the Wings gave him. They also gave him a 5 year/50, which he waited on, then rejected, which he dragged things along, then they tried the 4 year deal. This was all Feds doing, dragging it along so the Wings couldn't sign another player, because they were trying to sign him above everything else, therefore Feds is now on my list. Burn baby. Oh no you diiiiidaaannn't. They pulled that 5 year deal at the last minute and threw the 4 year at him. From what I read he didn't reject the 5 year at all- he asked for more time because of the divorce and losing his agent (a tough thing during negotiations, even if he was the one who released him- he released him for a reason). PLUS- Feds left for business reasons in the end. That diminishes none of his huge contribution to this team through the nineties and early 2000's.
