It's just i don't think it's smart by the GM to just throw money at the guy... in this cap era you have to be thinking like ken holland... but i guess we can assume canes isnt a contender for the cup anyways.

He kinda is thinking like Ken Holland. Eric Staal is the Hurricanes top player by far, he's the face of the franchise. The 'Canes have a decent salary structure and they need to have Eric Staal locked up to be competitive for the foreseeable future.

So what they should've done was let him walk because guys like Eric Staal come around all the time?

Doesn't 6.0-7.0M$ sound better for a player like Staal?

Of course, but with the way salaries are going up, getting a guy like him locked up on a deal like that for seven years will likely end up being a smart move.

He's a guy that can score 100 points. They don't grow on trees.

More than Iginla and Thornton? Yikes.

He's 23. This is his 3rd contract and he's giving up years and years of free agency. Staal would've gotten more than Hossa on the open market.

Its too much for being 10 months before his contract expires. I could see 8.25 if this was June 30 and wanted to keep him but giving him what he wanted really shows that management was worried he wanted out. Hope for there sake the cap doesnt drop in the next few years.

Boom. Thats the kicker here. 8.25 is Crosby/Malkin territory. I like Staal much more than I like Crosby and Malkin, but its easy to say that Staal isn't in the same realm as those two guys are. Like you said, I could see Staal signing this contract if July 1st was fast approaching, but there is PLENTY of time for JR to play a little hard ball and shave a little bit of the cream off the top of that fat contract.

Would 7.75M not have been enough for Staal on a 7 year contract? That 500k could be the difference between retaining another player, or signing a key player off the market. Its not a bad deal per se, but one would think you'd get a better deal for both sides if youre signing that early.

Eric Staal is definately better then Malkin, if the Canes stay healthy they'll make the post season and Staal will easily score 100 points. He's very underated as far as stars go, and that much money is a fair deal.

When people bring up Iginla and Thornton, these guys are veterans who took less to help there teams get better.

That Datsyuk deal is looking better and better now. Remember a couple seasons back how everyone thought Holland overpaid?

TBQH, I never thought the deal was a bad deal. I knew Datsyuk would break out of his playoff slump. Now, I just hope we can lock up Z for $8 mil or less. per year.

Not everybody! I didn't.

I think this is going to be a great deal down the road. Staal should only get better with experience.

I don't know, I really don't see Staal as a special player... I mean he's good and all, but I really don't see him being an elite player even 5 years from now when he is in his prime. By elite player, I'm talking top 20 forward... Yes, I don't think he'll be a top 20 forward in 13/14, that's just me. He isn't a top 20 forward now either the way I see it, if he is, he just cracks the list.
