Sundin Update

He is apparently going to wait-and-see until November or December. If the Leafs are in last place, he'll retire, but if they're in the playoff race, he'll likely come back. (So basically, he's going to retire)

In the end, it looks like he will only play for the Leafs. He hasn't been able to get past his loyalty and has told his friends that he just can't play for another team.

This is all according to Darren Dreger.

Sounds like he's pulling a Forsberg, except he's healthy.

I think it's pretty pathetic he'd let the rest of the team play a grueling season while he sits from the sidelines and either retires or reaps their rewards.

I seriously could not care any less. Claude Lemieux's return interests me more than this circus Sundin's dragged the media through all summer long.

I am totally over this topic. I am not sure who is more frustrating, him or the media. I think he needs to sign or retire,so the league, and these teams that have wasted their summer can go on about trying to pick up whats left and set their rosters. I guess thats just mainly Vancouver though right?

Actually to be fair to Sundin I feel this retirement fiasco has mostly been the media's fault. I even remember seeing "Sundin to Canucks" as a front page headline on yahoo.ca, no the sports section but the main front page.

i thought for sundin the mindset was "i dont want to be a rental player and only play half the season. i would never join a team partway through a season because i want to be there from beginning to end."

If he waits long enough wouldn't a contender be able to fit him in under the salary cup if he does decide to come back?

If he is truly intent on winning a Cup, then any team that has a roster spot for him can fit him in if he is willing to sign for the necessary amount of money.

The Wings could waive Tomas Kopecky or Aaron Downey and sign Sundin at their salary right now if Sundin were willing. He could sign for the league minimum with any team of his choice if he wanted to.

This is strange to me. I remember last season a lot of the fuss about Sundin not waving his no-trade clause, on top of not wanting to leave the Leafs, was that he wouldn't want to join a team set up for a cup at the end of the season he would want to be a part of the whole thing. Now, if this is true, and it could be speculation, that would be a pretty lame move ala Forberg, Neidermeyer, etc. I personally think he is done, but is stuck not wanting to play or announce his retirement, so instead of burning out so-to-speak, he is just kinda fading away.

another Niedermayer/Forsberg like player?

I lost a lot respect for him.

EDIT: Leafs and the playoffs... ? you're sure we're refering to the right Toronto team? wasn't it supposed to be Marlies?

I respect his loyalty but if he wants to play for the Leafs just start from the beginning of the season dont be a part-timer, finish your career and go out in a respectable way, full season, win or lose.
