Luongo named Canucks Captain

Luongo is their best player, leads by example and is vocal. Unconventional but the correct choice.

Ohlund has already said he expects to be traded.

Of all the individuals on that team he's definitely the "best choice", but people (not you Heaton--I'm fairly confident you know this already) need to realize that he's not going to have the "C" on his jersey due to the rule. The problem though lies in what will Luongo be able to contribute to the team outside of TV Timeout and locker room speeches?

This is stupid. They're still going to have Mitchell do all the work such as dealing with the officials and ceremonies and what not?

Rather disrespectful to Mitchell IMO.

I understand that Roberto can't and whatever because of the restrictions or whatever...but if they're going to part out the duties of captain why not just make Mitchell captain and then just give the "locker room duties" to Luongo.

It just shows how poorly their organization is run... It's obvious that he's their star player, but how is he going to be a shining example for all the forwards and d-men? Is he planning on playing out of net more often?

Pardon me, but what does Luongo know about the skaters' roles? Is he going to yell from across the ice to motivate his teammates?

Maybe they figure that they're backchecking most of the time anyway... <_<

ridiculous. mike gillis is already a big enough disgrace to their organization and he's only been behind the wheel a few months. the canucks are boring as hell to watch and are quickly becoming one of my least liked franchises.

Who cares?

No Crawford, Quinn or Burke - yet I still hate the Canucks. And Mitchell's an a-hole anyways. Jump on a plane for Motown, Roberto [i told ya before you signed there to come play for God's team]!!!!

*insert my obligatory Kenny shoulda went after him here* :)

So my exposure to hockey may be somewhat limited compared to some, but what the hell? I've never heard of a goalie as a captain before.

From the article....

Only six goaltenders have served as team captains in NHL history. The Montreal Canadiens' Bill Durnan was the last goaltender to serve as captain in the 1947-'48 season.

Prior to 1948-'49, the NHL passed a rule prohibiting goalies to act as captain or assistants in what could be called the 'Durnan Rule.'

The Canadiens keeper left his crease so much to argue calls that opponents protested saying that Durnan's actions gave the Canadiens unscheduled timeouts during strategic points in games.

In case anyone is interested, this is covered under Rule 14d in the NHL Rule Book. No playing Coach or playing Manager or goalkeeper shall be permitted to act as Captain or Alternate Captain.

Thanks for the info. Interesting stuff. But yeah, I started following hockey back in '93. haha. So are the Cannucks just saying "screw Rule 14d"?? They are "mavericks" just like McCain :P

Now that would be cool :D

I think they're saying that they're technically following the rule, Luongo will not wear the C or 'act' as captain as it pertains to on ice play..... But he is officially their captain...

I say since they have apparently found a loophole and have him as their official captain.....why not let him wear the 'C' on his jersey but still restrict his ability to talk to the refs

Just to clarify everything -

Luongo is the C, but he won't wear it. Ohlund, Kesler and Mitchell are all assistant captains this year so no one will officially wear the "C".

I don't think it's a bad idea, they are obviously trying to cement the future of Luongo in Vancouver so when he's a FA he wont dip out on them leaving the team with no good players at all.

Any explanation as to why the rule excludes goaltenders? I get the playing coaches or managers part but why goaltenders? They are players like everyone else...

I just find this ridiculous because who is suppose to rally the team on the bench and what not. Give advice to the forwards and defense and motivate them. How valid are Luongo's suggestions going to be as he will only be able to when he rushes to the bench (if he even does) during TV Timeouts and in the locker room. Also, what if he has to take a dump like in the past :P. Based on that, he is a s***ty example :)

For what it's worth, Brodeur is basically the captain in NJ, but Lou isn't stupid enough to actually name a goalie captain. What a dumb move by a dumbass GM. Vancouver are in for a long, hard to bear season. Looks good on them for firing a good guy like Nonis who only made that team better, whereas Gillis has made them worse.
