uk_redwing 495 Report post Posted October 2, 2008 Apparantly the fights were both hug fests so nothing to get excited about. Downey needs to get in a fight...in a televised game obviously.
FireCaptain 563 Report post Posted October 2, 2008 Except for the shootout, which you could chalk as inexperience, he really brought it last night. What do you folks think, about 45 games for Oz, 35ish for TyCo, 12ish for Howard? I think that's 92 games.
savaking72 0 Report post Posted October 2, 2008 Man, we OWN the Thrashers! Can't wait for the season to start. Not being able to watch games really stinks.

YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted October 2, 2008 Willy was an unrestricted free agent. Did anyone else hear the announcers being stunned by Brad Stuart deciding not to take Kovalchuk's head off in center ice? Was about 5 minutes ago or so. Apparently Ilya had his head down and Stu had him perfectly lined up but made the conscious decision that the trainwreck was unnecessary in preseason. Q or Lilly probably would have felt compelled to take that hit (were they good enough to get in position). I like that Brad had the presence of mind not kill Kovalchuk. Lighting him up doesn't help Stuart or the Wings. Thats a prime example of how much the preseason matters to the underlings. Folks always make light of the fact that bottom-feeders tend to take out big stars in the pre-season, but it is exactly what I'd expect from a guy trying to make the team or trying to build a reputation with his club. I'd have been a little disappointed if Stuart had gone after Kovalchuk - we all know Stuart is capable of 150+ hits in a season, and he knows his #4 spot is solidified. But with guys like Kopecky for example, you can't ask them to do the same. A guy like that is trying to build himself a reputation, and other guys are in a dog fight for a roster spot. Its hypocritical to hear some people say that a youngster taking out somebody in the regular season is "unnecessary" or "doesn't help anyone" when in fact, it could do wonders for how his coach sees him and could have a huge impact on when and where his career begins or carries on. K im done.

Aussie_Wing 354 Report post Posted October 2, 2008 Lilja only played 5:14, I take it that he didn't play after his fight? Anyone know what the problem may be? Quincey played a bit more tonight, obviously due to the fact Lilja went off early. Samuelsson loves scoring in pairs doesn't he? Whenever anyone wants to write him off he delivers. He's not a great player and will go missing for periods but there's no denying he can score and every now and then he'll have a ripper game. Good even spread of minutes tonight, perhaps Lenio should've played a tad more but on the whole everyone saw a decent amount of ice-time, even the youngsters Mursak, Emmerton and Ritola. Vladiator 116 Report post Posted October 2, 2008 Or specifically, Pronger...? Jackman...? LaPerriere...? Still think LaPerriere deserves another introduction from Downey again or DMac if Downey isn't around.
manellis 0 Report post Posted October 2, 2008 (edited) Hey guys, I've been lurking around here for a while. Anyways, I'm from Atlanta and have been watching the Wings for about 10 years now. I went to the game tonight, so I thought I would post some info (not sure how much of this has already been stated tho, so sorry if it has). Lilja did not return after his fight. It basically consisted of a few missed punches, the last of which caused Lilja to lose his footing and fall down on his chest. His arms were still tangled up, so he gashed something on his head. He left the ice with blood running down his face, I think Larson gave him a towel for hit as he walked out the tunnel. McCarty pretty much dominated his fight, I forgot who it was against (but the box score should make that obvious). He got in some strong punches without getting hit at the start before they both went down. Of course, since McCarty ended up under the Thrasher, all the Atlanta fans were going nuts thinking they had won the fight. Overall, we looked pretty good tonight. Wasn't a dominant performance though, there are certainly still some kinks to work out. Not sure if it was because some of these lines haven't played together for that long or what, but sometimes it seemed like there was some miscommunication about who was going where, so some of the passes created some awkward situations. Also, towards the end of the second and for much of the third, the thrashers started to play more physical, getting what few fans were present into the game. They started to put some more pressure on our passing game, so it started to go back and forth a lot. Zetterberg's goal was a mistake by Thrashers goalie Lehtonen. He tried to handle a puck in the corner and pass it to a defender on the other side of the crease. Zetterberg charged down the side, redirecting the puck into the net. I think he expected to have to touch the puck again after he first touched it, but it was right on target. Hope at least some of this was new information for you guys, I just got in and haven't read how people watched/listened to the game. PS I bought a $10 ticket at the door, went down low for practice, and didn't leave row 6 until the game was over. It was definitely nice to see all of the players in person for once, they haven't been to Atlanta in quite a while now. I also touched DMac's glove, I was pretty pumped EDIT: forgot to add that the Thrashers goal was a ghetto version of a Datsyuk dangler. The footwork wasn't as smooth, but Ozzie still bit. Also, Ozzie had one get past his body, but he had his stick up, and the handle (the little stub at then end) was down at ice level and deflected the puck away from the goalline until a defenseman got a stick on it and cleared it.
