Downey cleared waivers

Recommended Posts

Good afternoon. Yes, my first post, but I had to register on this board as a long time Wing's fan. I think some posters clearly are missing the point of having Downey or such a player on the roster.

I have been following the Wings for almost 30 years, season ticket holder for 12 years, and my family has been attending Wings games since early days at the Olympia.

However, these posts that it's a 'good move' to send Downey to GR is simply hogwash. When your own Captain says they appreciate having Downey on the bench, it's silly to me that he gets ignored. This year more than ANY other year the Wings will have huge targets on their backs from opposing teams. They'll look to crush the Wings physically and impose a gameplan to throw their finesse system off-track.

Will it take Holland and Babcock to have a key player injured from a Cam Janssen style hit until the Wings then realize they made a mistake sending Downey to GR?

Silly...

Me2 30 years and counting. On this board you have to back up your mouth, there are some people here who know the game really well. No matter what the Wings are always the big target. The game has changed so much that the enforcers role has diminished in my opinion. and we lilly, and Dats likes to scrap too. hehe

it's officially embarrassing to be a red wings fan again

Well the world needs ditch diggers too. Have a nice day and don't let the door hit you on the ass on the way out. They've replaced Drake with Hossa (oh God the humanity) and almost have the same roster that won the cup. So some of your "favs" aren't here. I'll let Kenny know and may be he can save your face value and bring some of the guys up soon.

Why the hell is Downey on waivers? What is this?! Are they just hoping he clears and gets sent down?

Just no room for him right now. He signed a two-way contract so he can go down. If no one was to claim him. They did this last year as well.

He will clear and he will get sent down. He had to be waived to get sent down. He needs to be sent down to make us fit under the cap since we have 3 players on either IR or LTIR. Once they heal up and can be assigned to GR, Downey will be recalled.

There, fixed it for yah.

...ok, well, as much as I hate McCarty,I do understand that he cannot be sent down while injured, so unfortunately Downey had to go, but what gives me comfort is that I know as soon as McCarty is healthy, he will be in GRR for conditioning and at least Downey will be getting ice time down there to prepare for the call up! I am sure he doesn't mind playing in GRR if it means another 50 games in Detroit and another Stanley Cup! As far as McCarty is concerned I hope he finds his niche' in GRR and stays there, for he has lost a LOT in his tank and is pretty much just a waste of a roster position!

...so with Downey, well, Down and McCarty injured does that give Lieno the final roster spot for the opener? Speaking of the opener, anyone going to the Fox for the Def Leppard gig? I wanted to but wife has school and no one else wants to go! I'd take my boys, but they cannot sit still long enough at home to watch a hockey game, I doubt they'd be on their best behaviour at the Fox, let alone for Def Leppard! Oh well! If anyone goes, please post a thread about it, we'd love to read about it!

LETS GO WINGS!

How many players don't make it through waviers that teams are worried about? Besides anyone Burke has under him. I mean generally enforcers aren't really stolen from other teams, so Downey and Mac probably won't be stolen.

...ok, so, didn't want to start another thread, but do we know the opening day roster?

technically yes

FWs are Hossa, Homer, Zata, Dats, Flip, Cleary, Huds, Franz, Sammy, Kope, Draper, Maltby (12)

DFs are Lids, Rafs, Stuart, Kron, Lils, Lebda, Meech, Quincey (8)

Gs are Osgood, Conklin (2)

IR/LTIR are D-Mac, J-Ho, Cheli (3)

There is your 23 man roster for opening day as of now, obviously if/when Quincey is traded it'll be a 22 man roster on opening day

Most teams have a tough guy or two so it's not like Downey is a sure fire thing to be claimed off waivers.

Yes, I'm annoyed by this move. I'm not going to argue with anyone here about it anymore, though. If you don't think having Downey benefited the team during the 82 game grind last year, okay. I disagree.

It would be hard not to disagree with the fact that the Wings benefited from Downey in the lineup, however limited his time on the ice/bench was.

He better not be claimed. All Downey talks about is how much he loves being on this team, and that he would defend them to know end, and he HAS. He's absolutely needed. I don't care that he isn't skilled like the rest, he doesn't need to be. His job is to protect our boys and stir some things out there and he does just that and it pisses me the hell off that once again they decide to waive him. I'll be crossing my fingers....

There's zero chance Downey gets claimed, there's better enforcers that got waived despite Downey's claim that he's a top 5 enforcer in the game. It's fine to be annoyed by the move but I know you're smart enough, BlueMonk, to realize that just because player A isn't on the roster to start the season doesn't mean player A won't be there at some point. This had more to do with cap issues and the "problem" of having too many good players and not enough roster slots. For some reason people see a player getting waived and they view it as a death sentence and he's gone forever. Downey knew the deal and everyone else should've as well when he signed a two-way deal.

It's either start trading or losing players now or KEEP EVERYONE and have some NHL players start in the minors. Big friggin' deal.

The only option the team had really, with Mac being injured he is in the same boat as Howard you can not send an injured player down. Downey had to go, if they were both healthy the same move may have been made but one never knows. If D-mac is healthy again and stays up one can assume that was going to be the move all along, but as soon as Mac is healthy he could switch with Downey, who really knows.

Edit:

A decent player that I have got to think will be back on another team soon.

Howard and Mac only account for a small cap hit since they only played a handful of games last year for the wings (pro-rated)

I think this shows that Mac has apparently won the enforcer/13 forward job from downey. I dont think Mac is seriously injured, because then he'd be like chelios and be on IR.

Not an argument, just a simple question. How did the Wings survive the 82 game grind in '06 and '07 without a fighter?
