FinRedWing 172 Report post Posted October 7, 2008 (edited) Well I guess this is perfectly understandable since Howard and D-Mac can't be sent down at the moment. Edited October 7, 2008 by FinRedWing

clutchngrab 12 Report post Posted October 7, 2008 Thats too bad. Leino belongs in the NHL based on his skill level. Helm belongs based on his speed.

When you are the GM, please feel free to get rid of all of our veterans in favor of whoever you feel skates fast and is the new flavor of the month. Until then, quit your crying. If you really want something to ***** about, start rooting for the Blue Jackets or the Blues.

Opie 308 Report post Posted October 7, 2008 (edited) Yeah that's exactly what I wrote. Man you are so fookin' annoying it's not even funny. So aren't the posts about how to run the team, considering the people that are doing it do a damn fine job. But oh well you are not the first and certainly won't be the last to call me annoying. Oh and another thing you forgot in your so eloquently worded Maltby and Kopecky comparison to Leino is money, Leino will make 375,000 more than Kopecky and as we all know when healthy the Wings are over the cap, but you thought about that I am sure. It is just that your like or dislike of certain players must have more weight in your mind! Edited October 7, 2008 by Opie
Mickeyisms Rule! 0 Report post Posted October 7, 2008 (edited) haha yeah sorry I think Helm and Leino are better players than Maltby and Kopecky. You're allowed to be wrong. As it stands now you are looking at their potential and saying that it has come to fruition. While they stand the chance of being better hockey players than the 2 you mentioned, they aren't there yet. They'll both get called up before the end of the season. Maybe just for injury stints or after the roster limit changes towards the end of the season. They're not going to rot and go bad playing in GR. They might even get better. Helm needs to work on keeping possession of the puck when he is skating and Leino needs to work on protecting himself and the puck. Especially in Leino's case, learning how to protect himself in the corners and near the wall may be more important to the longevity of his career in the NHL then making the big team right out of his first camp. Mors 201 Report post Posted October 7, 2008 I don't really understand why Kopecky has earned an automatic spot on the roster...must be his epic toughness and huge 12 points in 77 games last season.
KrazyGangsta 79 Report post Posted October 7, 2008 Leino did play amazing ... but it is only pre-season, there probably going to make him play some games in GR then middle of year bring him up for a couple of games ... and eventually make the team at the end of season ... knowing kopecky he will be injured in january

(edited for typo) agreed, plus Leino and Helm aren't the types of players to replace Maltby and Kopecky(who actually played fine until his injury). Helm you MAY say he is close but still is more like Draper, and Leino I suppose would be more like a Sammy. You replace players of certain positions with the same type of player; in a successful organization, not just replace checkers with shooters. We all want to see them up, we all know Chelios, and Maltby need to retire but it's not happening this year.

Konnan511 1,736 Report post Posted October 7, 2008 Hopefully once everyone is healthy and able to be re-assigned to the right places, leino will get activity duty on the WIngs roster, or at least i suspect so will be the case.
Opie 308 Report post Posted October 7, 2008 (edited) I don't really understand why Kopecky has earned an automatic spot on the roster...must be his epic toughness and huge 12 points in 77 games last season. While I agree one of the words from the bolded sentence happened, both couldn't. Either he earned his spot or was automatically given one. Either way that means in the mind of his Stanley cup winning coach, who posted back to back to back 50 win seasons, he was worth the roster spot. He was the Wings leading hitter last year, maybe, just maybe, Babs is thinking that while Hossa replaced Drake's spot on the roster he didn't take his role and Babs wants a forward to chase down D-men like Drake did. Instead of a Draper clone (compliment to Helm) or Leino who for all intents and purposes seems to be Sammy's replacement next year. Babs has come out and publicly said that Leino needs to work on using his body and going to the net, Leino admitted that going to the net in the NA rink is very different and much more important than in the Euro rink. A skill Flip had trouble with until last season (not a shot against him just stating it). But you are right the spot was just handed to him because hey why not, it isn't like they are trying to win or anything! Guest E_S_A_D Report post Posted October 7, 2008 Fantastic news and yes I am serious. Leino has no business being with the Red Wings right now. Yes, he can skate pretty and do cute moves. However, you're forgetting one key thing... IT WAS PRESEASON HOCKEY- he wasn't being pressed defensively like he will be. I think he WILL be a 20+ NHL Goal Scorer, but he needs some real North American conditioning in the AHL First. Also, this clears up a much needed roster spot for Downey after he clears waivers. Downey > Leino, McCarty, Ericsson combined as far as the 2008 Detroit Red Wings TEAM is concerned.

Downey > Leino, McCarty, Ericsson combined as far as the 2008 Detroit Red Wings TEAM is concerned. I have to agree with you. Leino said he is commited to playing in North America and learning the game. I became a fan of him this preseason, but give him some time hell be needed next year. Downey brings an element that is needed. How much will a guy like leino add on the ofurth line? I d rather see him and helm log serious mins in GR. Ericcson also can stay another season in GR even though I think he's ready, but once again hes another player wel need next year. As far as this year there is no question downey is the one most needed. Edited October 7, 2008 by cnot19

Heaton 1 Report post Posted October 7, 2008 Mike Babcock raved about Leino's skill, and there's no question he'll be with the Wings sooner or later this season. "This is the best player I’ve been involved in sending to the minors, I can tell you that," Babcock said. "He’s got a nose for the net, goes to the net, dominant on the cycle, makes great passes. He’s a Red Wings type player. Leino, I think he's going to be a scoring machine."
