I only caught the trail end of this, but the panel was talking about what the Wings are going to have to pay Hank next year. I didn't hear the figure at first, but Pierre Lebrun was talking about the unwritten rule in Detroit, how no one make more than Lidstrom and how the Wings might have to bend that rule for Hank (which I completely agree with). I was looking at Kukla's Korner this morning and they mentioned this. Pierre LeBrun stated the starting point for signing Zetterberg will be $8.25 million per year. That's actually a bit more than I was thinking. I'd like to get Hank locked up for 10 years, between $70-75 million. $.8.25 million is a lot, especially when the cap is projected to be going down next year. It's likely going to take some real creativity on Holland's part to get the pieces to fit next year.

I think Hank will take a discount and make righta round what Datsyuk is making.

I wouldn't count on that, Z is a little bit more accomplished than Datsyuk was when Datsyuk signed his contract. I could see Z signing for around 7.6m but not more than 8.

Not likely. If they are willing to pay Hossa 7.45 mil, they aren't going to ask Z to take 6.7 mil. Hank will go somewhere in the neighborhood of $8mil and that will be with Lidstrom's blessing. Mule will go for about $4-5 mil depending on what he does this season. Rex will get 2-3 again depending on what he does this year. Sammy about the same, Kopy $1.5 and Hossa will be the odd man out.

Cheli, DMac and Conklin will not be back.

The only way this doesn't happen is if the Salary Cap soars or (God forbid) there is a significant injury to somebody.

Didn't he say he would take a discount, Z is good and all and since he is going to be the captain eventually I would say he should get 7-7.5 max, Datsyuk is better then he is or at least on par so he shouldn't make that much more then him.

I've always said his new contract will be $7.45M for the first 2 years (same as remainder of Nicks contract), then $8M per year for the rest of the deal, however long that is.

8 Mil IS a discount. I am sure that there are several teams that would pay him the league maximum which is 20% of the salary cap or about $11 mil +.

If Vancouver is willing to drop $10 mil a year on a 38 year old Sundin, don't you think that they would offer Z at least that much?

There are discounts and then there are discounts.

Dats signed his contract a couple of years ago, since then values have risen. If Dats were on the open market today he would go for at LEAST $8mil.

I think that that is a very real possibility especially if Nick lets Holland know that he is done after this contract. At that point Nick's $7.45 mil goes away and they can pay Z more.

Massive overpayment for Kopecky and Sam. I think at least one of these two won't be on the team next year.

You missed the point. It's not what I am on, it's what the GM's of teams like Edmonton and Vacnouver are on.

Z is undoubtably one of the best players in the game (certainly in the top 5) and he's in the prime of his career. If you don't think that somebody would offer him $10 mil a year, then you haven't been following the free agent frenzy every year.

Excellent point. Holland promised Lids that no one would make more than him when signing the extension. So, they structure the contract to escalate. Then, if Lids re-signs after next season you almost have to think that it will be one year deals and at some dollar amount that is cap friendly.

I tend to think Hank will not sign for anywhere close to ten years due to his health issues in the past. I think the only way that the wings would do this is if the cap hit was around Pav's contract. It would give Hank the long-term security he would desire, and the wings the flexibility they would desire. I just am not sold it will happen though. Hank may be a team guy, but he is not stupid either. Look at the contract that Kopitar just inked. I believe it was for 6.8 per year. That is only 100k more than Pav per year. Pav's deal is going to be considerably under market value unless the salary cap drops drastically. If the cap does drop, the only good side effect is that it lowers the max contract that a team is allowed to give a player based on the 20% rule.

It has been mentioned before, but at the end of the day with all of the free agents, the major decision of the summer could be Mule vs. Hossa; who do they re-sign?

Does anybody else think the wings may shop Hudler? He is a RFA next summer, which would allow them compensation if they lose him. But, it could allow them the flexibility to call up Leino if they desire. I think most would rather see Sammy traded, but all you could get for him most likely is a bag of pucks.

Whew...that should be about all for now.

If push comes to shove, Hossa is gone.

are you talking about in terms of keeping hossa or zetterberg? if so, then of course i agree with you.

but i think there is going to be a way to keep them both.

i thought next off season a decision is going to have to be made in deciding to keep:

hossa

huder

franzen

samuelsson

notice of course im assuming zetterberg is going to be resigned during the season no matter what. i let sammy walk, and work on signing 2 of the 3 plays left. my choices as of right now are hossa and franzen. i just dont see how it'd be possible to retain hossa, hudler and franzen

The real question is, what happened to the Link to Satellite Hotstove on CBC.CA.

Cannot find the footage and that depresses me, thats the best way to learn about what is going on in the league.

BTW, if they keep Hossa and lose Franzen I will be pissed. If they lose Hossa and keep Franzen I will be fine. If they keep both I will be stunned.

Hudler I don't think we will worry about now because of Leino. I think we will wait and see. I bet things will work out fine. If we are smart Sammy and Lilja will disapear and we will pick up a couple of million to play with.

Plus I kinda think Howard will disappear now as well.

Lots of options.

Now were did they move hotstove to???

I agree. Hank will realize that we have other guys like franzen who we are trying to fit in our long-term cap as well. i think he will sign long term for somewhere between 4 and 6 million a year.

hank will make at least 7m per year.

my guess would be that he will sign for the same amount as lids (7.45m) for around 5-6 years.

Kopitar signed extension for 7 years ($6.8M per season) and you think that Zetterberg will sign for $7.6M - good luck with that!!!

Just goes to show how crazy salaries have become in the 3 years since the end of the lockout...why did they cancel the season anyway? Oh yeah, cost certainty and to keep salaries low...how's that working out for your Gary?

Is there a better example anywhere than Jeff Finger and his cool $3.5 million a year deal?

Yeah I wish Mike Milbury isn't there....

If the cap doesnt change much 8.25 seems plausable. The thought however that he will take Pav's contract is very comforting, but doesn't seem to have any thing to make it likely outside of my greatest hopes.

I still stand by the fact that out of all our UFA's we need to keep Zetter and Johan. I would also like to keep Jiri because he seems to be important to the lockeroom. He is a charecter all the guys love.
