Shutemdown 23 Report post Posted October 17, 2008 (edited) Alright... same topic, new thread. Did anyone else think Darren Helm played another amazing game last night? Is it just me or does it seem like something's always happening when he's out on the ice? He's an amazing player... I still can't fathom how he hasn't been granted his shot in the big leagues, especially over Kopecky. He's fast as hell, but his best asset is that he gives 1,000,000% every time he steps on the ice. He's like a young Maltby (when Maltby was young) mixed with Dan Cleary. Fast, aggressive forecheck, in your face, able to throw the body, good offensive skills, takes shots, gets his own rebounds, etc. The kid's always working his ass off. Compared to half of our team, I think Helm deserves a spot. He's f'in awesome... I can understand him getting more minutes in GR, playing top-line minutes as opposed to 4th line minutes in Detroit, etc. Whatever. Just another game where I sit there and shake my head and wonder how he hasn't made the big team yet... Edited October 17, 2008 by Shutemdown
RyanBarnes! 293 Report post Posted October 17, 2008 I agree, Helm should be on the team. He adds much more than Maltby at this point.
Nev 1,085 Report post Posted October 17, 2008 He said it before he was sent down - he is doing everything in his power to stay with the big boys. Now, if the Big Red Machine was rumbling along as normal he wouldn't be missed. But since the team is misfiring, its very hard to send him down given his strong play. Question is, who sits once Z comes back?
taxijim 11 Report post Posted October 17, 2008 First of all I have to say I'm from Helms hometown , so everything I say is biased.....but I have been following his career since Jr.B & I tell you this kid is the real deal. He is not a natural goal scorer, but a tireless worker who will sacrifice his body to keep the puck away from the other team (no matter which end it is in) . I think Babcock should gently work him into the PK as I feel this is his strong point....when he was on the Team Canada Jr. gold medal team, he was a long shot to even make the team....after a few games he worked his way onto the 2nd line & then became their premier guy on the PK. A little work on faceoffs & scoring goals instead of hitting the post & I think he'll be here for a long time.
Mors 201 Report post Posted October 17, 2008 I would dump Maltby or Kopecky in a heartbeat for Helm in the lineup fulltime.
Barrie 900 Report post Posted October 17, 2008 The kid's always working his ass off. Compared to half of our team, I think Helm deserves a spot. 4 games after two straight 100+ game seasons and a Stanley Cup Championship, and I read comments like this. Helm's only 21, he'll be here full time sooner than later.

Helm's only 21, he'll be here full time sooner than later. This post isn't directed at JUST these past 4 games, or the past 2 seasons. Have we already forgotten how well he played in last year's playoffs? He was arguably one of our top 5 players on the ice the whole time. He really did outplay alot of our team. He's earned his spot by now, IMHO, ESPECIALLY when Kopecky STILL fails to show why he's on the team...
dtowndrew 0 Report post Posted October 17, 2008 I give Helm props for his effort last night. He had more jump than most of the guys on the ice. If I don't see more from Kopecky soon, I'd like to see Helm stay up with the Wings.

YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted October 18, 2008 I love the kid, and hes always the guy giving it his all game in and game out, but part of me wonders if things would change once he got a permanent spot on the squad...
Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted October 18, 2008 I like how Maltby is playing his best hockey since the lockout and people still want him gone. As for Helm, I've been excited for him since the Wolrd Juniors where he was a defensive beast, but if I have to wait until the playoffs it's fine. Even though I agree, he's good enough to play right now. Kopecky and Hudler look kinda lost most nights, but it's still early, 10 games or so into the season we'll see if Helm is gonna get his shot. babycks0612 0 Report post Posted October 18, 2008 some of you guys need to take a chill pill. Everyone on our team is a good asset in some way, they might not be perfect the way you would want them but their on the team for a reason. I agree that Helm is a really good player but I dont think we should just get rid of other key players. Someone has one bad night and you say their garbage? come on
swedishseven 9 Report post Posted October 18, 2008 it's just so comforting to know, that if you do have some players go down to injuries etc..this orginization is so deep that we have players like helm waiting in the wings (excuse the pun)..on that note,i would like to see more of him this year for sure... Guest Four Report post Posted October 18, 2008 Helm could really be a boost to our team right now if he starts increasing his vocals on the bench. We need someone like him to pump up our team. He is GREAT.

Only one way to find out But yeah I love watching the kid skate. Seems like every time I see him out on the ice, he is moving his legs and trying his best to make something happen. I think that he would already have a spot on just about any other team. Just so happens we are pretty much loaded with talent. ...although if Kopecky doesnt get his ass in gear I wouldnt mind seeing Helm take his spot.

SFwingsfan 23 Report post Posted October 18, 2008 I second the mancrush. The guy brings insane speed and intensity every single shift. We absolutely need him on the roster and i've been saying it consistently since last season. After every single game he plays there is always heaps of praise from just about everyone on this board. I can't bring myself to say "Maltby sits, Helm plays" but you bet I want this guy on our team.

Guest LivingtheDream Report post Posted October 19, 2008 I'm with you Shutemdown, I like this kid and the way he plays A LOT. Total effort. Total. You know he is putting every other 3rd and 4th line player on their toes with his play.
