SFwingsfan 23 Report post Posted December 31, 2008 Ok people we've seen about 30 minutes of Chris Chelios on the ice so far this season, has he really been that terrible? I thought he looked pretty decent last night. I love how he antagonizes and mixes it up with the other team, we are missing that element sometimes on this team. I know he should retire, but has he really been that bad so far, discuss....
chelios4eva 0 Report post Posted December 31, 2008 I think he's playing ok but then again... i'm a homer, and proud of it
RedArmy 4 Report post Posted December 31, 2008 its been only 3 games no complaints... if anything they used some Chelios leadership with lidstrom out...
Zion 93 Report post Posted December 31, 2008 His passes are crisp and on the tape. However, he is getting out-skated, and took a terrible hooking penalty late in the game last night. He needs to play positionally sound, and not chase, because he will lose. His strengths are winning puck battles along the boards, penalty killing and first-passes out of the zone, and the only one of those three I've seen were some pretty good passes. Very noticeable due to the number of failed clearing attempts and lack of tape-to-tape passing by our blue line. I still don't know if I'd play him tomorrow, with the exception of him being a native Chicagoan. Lillypads has been solid and I'd let Meech and Lameda fight for that sixth spot of Norris Nick can play tomorrow. Can't wait!
Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted December 31, 2008 I certainly think he's played well enough to put him on the ice for the Winter Classic... but it looks like he probably won't play He practiced on the 4th pairing with Meech today... I think that's pretty crappy considering this is a famous ex-Blackhawk that could be playing in the Marquee game between the Hawks and Wings. I dunno- I just don't see why he wouldn't be just as good as putting Lebda out there with Lilja, even if Lebda's also a Chicago boy (and thus should get some consideration too). Chelios is a hockey icon in Chicago, let the man play his 12 mins.
YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted December 31, 2008 I thought he looked solid. Absolutely no complaints. Sure he gets out-skated here and there but it rarely leads to anything. Still one of the best #6/7 guys in the league from the looks of it. I also thought he added a cagey element on the back-end that we'd been lacking. Chelios is really the only chippy bastard we have on this team.

I would suggest that's more because of giving Meech time with an experienced d-man (that is, after all, the primary purpose of Cheli's contract) than demonstrative of the actual pairings tomorrow. XxGoWingsxX 0 Report post Posted December 31, 2008 I'll be the first to start the chant....Let cheli play! Let Cheli Play!...and honestly, i bet there's even some old school hawks fans who'd love to see him out on the ice as a nostalgia thing....and also a few who think that if we put him out it gives them an advantage...hahaha, but i saw we let cheli play...with his loose skin and his old.....balls! I'm sure he's got a five year plan
Anomalously 0 Report post Posted December 31, 2008 However, he is getting out-skated, and took a terrible hooking penalty late in the game last night. He needs to play positionally sound, and not chase, because he will lose. You mean the one he took because his defensive partner missed the assignment and so Cheli had to skate east-west and then keep up with the guy? He's not Lidstrom, he's not going to be able to cover the entire ice. That wasn't his fault.
Heroes of Hockeytown 694 Report post Posted December 31, 2008 Cheli has played well in limited time. The good thing about Cheli is that he always makes the simple play. He's obviously not fleet of foot anymore but he'll get the puck out and he won't get caught pinching at a bad time.
Zune 0 Report post Posted January 1, 2009 Hes no better than he was in the Dallas series, where he got benched for being mediocre. I mean hes 46 and its a great story but if we werent up against the cap, Quincey, Kindl or Ericsson would be playing ahead of Chelios. I can't see him making it to 50, at least not on this team. TheOwl 77 Report post Posted January 1, 2009 As far as I know he's had no points and hasn't allowed a goal while he's been on the ice (so +/- is 0). Seems just fine, doesn't really matter if he can score goals, as long as he doesn't let any in when he's on the ice They should keep him until he decides to retire. He was benched beacause he got injured. There is a pretty good reason Chelios is still in Detroit, if he was not good enough he would not play, simple as that. VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted January 1, 2009 All I've noticed since Chelios got back is our defense stabilizing somewhat and him making far less mistakes than our other defenseman have. Hasn't looked too old or slow at all. Only 3 games in, and I'm a Chelios fan, but I think he's a valuable asset.
