Who will be the most successful when it's all said and done? In terms of most Norris trophies, All Star games, Stanley Cups, and other various awards collectively.

EDIT: Sorry, I hit enter post too early..

It was supposed to be a poll, but it can't be now... So the choices are...

Dion Phaneuf

Drew Doughty

Zach Bogosian

Victor Hedman

Erik Johnson

...and incredibly overrated.

Maybe, but damn is he lethal on the PP. His defensive ability will probably get up into elite level over time (he's certainly not much to write home about defensively, but like I said- his offensive play is fantastic, and his physical play is second to none).

Phaneuf is definitely a damn good defenseman. However, unfortunately for the majority of the Canadian hockey media he's not now, nor will he ever be, Norris Nik.

The poll should look like this.

Dion Phaneuf

Jay Bouwmeester

Duncan Keith

Brent Seabrook

Ryan Suter

Shea Weber

Drew Doughty

Zach Bogosian

Victor Hedman

Erik Johnson

Luke Schenn

In which case I'd say Keith and Doughty. Both of those guys are probably the smartest players in their "class" right now, and I wouldn't be surprised if it has a "Lidstrom-like" affect, and they really get the notice after a few years of being really good.

Great. Hes lethal on the PP, but even Calgary fans complain about his defensive gaffs, which are plenty. He gets a lot of spotlight because he can score goals, put up points, and is a big body that uses it, but there are some pretty decent downfalls to his game. He never struck me (and still doesn't) as a smart player, and thats ultimately what separates the best defenseman from all the rest.

Guest Four

PK Subban will be the next Norris man!

Srsly though, Ellis from Team Canada is looking like a future Norris winner at age 17.

Way to hijack another dudes thread...just answer the question or dont respond at all. As for the original question its hard to tell but I will tell you one thing..after watching Hedman play in the gold medal game tonight I dont see what the big deal is with this guy. Big players show up in big games and he was terrible tonight !!

I would have to go with Shea Weber above Keith. He is looking extremely good in Nashville this year, Keith has been good but certainly not as good as Weber.

I agree on the score of Doughty, he looks fantastic so far.

As far as one "level" down from the most recent draftees, I would say that PK Subban looks like he is going to be a superb defenseman, along with Karlsson from the Sweden juniors. I also have to root for Ryan Ellis, as he grew up within 30 minutes of where I live. f*** yeah.

Quoted for truth.

Phaneuf's defensive game has made no step forwards, and may have even taken a step or two back. He is not even Calgary's #1 or #2 option for the PK or for defending top offensive lines -- that alone disqualifies him from any Norris talk whatsoever, IMO. Is it so much to ask that a Norris caliber defenseman take the toughest defensive assignments? Phaneuf, the way he is playing, would need over 120 points this year to dethrone Lidstrom.

Doughty shows me the most promise out of all of them in the OP.
