Sean Avery and the All-Star Game

This might sound like a pointless question in retrospect, but I was wondering what would have happened if Sean Avery had been voted in as a starter in the ASG?

Could he have played even though he's currently suspended by Dallas? My initial reaction is no, but I wasn't sure.

If so, then he should have been voted in. If the Canadiens' fans can make the league look stupid by voting in Montreal's undeserving players, then I would have loved to see the league look even worse by Avery making it in.

OMFG!!! ANOTHER AVERY THREAD!!!!!~ AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! :battle:

:P

esteef

It was more of a question than an attempt to start a 40 page thread, but if that's how you interpret it, I won't argue with you.

Anyway, thanks for answering my question.

There's not a chance in hell the league would let him play ...

Why not he is not suspended by the league anymore, it is a team suspension. He fulfilled his penalty to the league, he served his time I don't think they should be able to tell him no if he has served his punishment for them. This not playing now is a team decision, which I am surprised the PA hasn't done anything about!

Based on what rule?

How could they not have let him play even though he's not officially suspended by the league? Or am I misinterpreting the rules?

The Avery Rule p2? I don't know, but I'm sure they would find or create some rule that would disqualify him. The league doesn't seem too concerned about having a precedent when it comes to punishing Avery.

On December 14, 2008--only hours after the last game of Avery's suspension--the Stars announced that Avery would not return to the team.

He's not an active player in the NHL. The Stars are still paying him, but he's not playing anymore. So to me, the answer is no. He would not be eligible to play in the ASG and besides if they did let him play, what a collosal ******* joke it would be that Sean Avery would be allowed to play after all this garbage, but someone like Hank is NOT there.

He's still an active player in the league lol. Management just isn't playing him. Just because he is suspended by his own team doesn't mean he isn't a player anymore. It's just like like Stephon Marbury(sp) thing with the Knicks, if management wanted him to play they could let him play because he is still a player, same goes for Sean.

If Sean was voted in to the AS game I don't see how the NHL could stop him by playing if he played by the rules and was voted in, but that said, just like the MTL thing, they (NHL) could probably rig the voting and say there was mass automated voting going on and keep him out of it!

Tell that to Montreal fans. Talent apparently has nothing to do with it.

However, it is a moot point since he wasn't voted in. I was just thinking hypothetically.

I'd like to think that the league wouldn't let someone that has been causing a lot of problems/recently suspended in to the ASG. It's a big media day for the nhl and the last thing the league needs is someone like him giving bad publicity and drawing attention from all the Stars of the game that do things the right way.

But I don't believe there is anything in writing that would prevent him from playing.

I think he could have improved the ASG's pathetic ratings in recent memory.

Something has to improve those ratings.

To me every league should drop the all star games.

They are pointless and more and more players back out of them for rest, family time, nagging injuries, planned vacations.

Just drop it all together and shorten the season by a week!

(By removing all of the down time the ASG takes!)

At least let the NFL keep theirs, it's all Hawaii ever gets! :P

I wish Avery had been voted in. It just might have been the straw that broke the camel's back to show the league what a joke the fan voting is.

To clarify: I don't wish for him to actually play, nor do I think he has the talent. I only wish it had happened to prove that point. Hearing Bettman weasel out of it would have been a bonus.
