VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted January 9, 2009 I guess they have to protect officials, but a gentle shove to get him out of the way doesn't seem like worthy of real punishment.
edicius 3,269 Report post Posted January 9, 2009 At first, I didn't think there was anything suspendable. But...then came the shove. And like it or not, making contact with the ref like that is a suspendable offense. Stupid technicality, but it's there. Who was it earlier this season that got suspended for touching a ref's arm or shoulder trying to get his attention?
DatsMyWings13 4 Report post Posted January 9, 2009 (edited) The league has to protect their refs and make sure the players know they are off limits. I see no problem with this. Edited January 9, 2009 by DatsMyWings13

And like it or not, making contact with the ref like that is a suspendable offense. Stupid technicality, but it's there. Who was it earlier this season that got suspended for touching a ref's arm or shoulder trying to get his attention? Mike Peca. He tried to turn him around, to get a face-to-face discussion. SweWings 45 Report post Posted January 9, 2009 All I've heard is that Grabovski has quite a quick temper...
Yak19 303 Report post Posted January 9, 2009 They should have let them go, Grabovski is still a kid he is immature, he didnt deal with that too well, the Habs fans were really giving it to him. Its too bad because he has been playing well for the Leafs this season.
jellytoast 1 Report post Posted January 9, 2009 Had to give him the susp. But I love the guy, he'll go ya for a beer
esteef 2,679 Report post Posted January 9, 2009 The league has to protect their refs and make sure the players know they are off limits. I see no problem with this. Agree. If ever there was a time to nip a slippery slope in the bud before it develops, it's with this subject. Refs are not wearing protection like players and shouldn't have to deal with guys trying to manhandle them. They have a hard enough job trying to break up fights and brawls and keeping people safe as it is. esteef
AtomicPunk 296 Report post Posted January 9, 2009 I may be quoting out of context here but didn't Don Cherry say that when he was in Montreal, didn't they cut him loose because he was out of shape? or was that Wellwood?
Datsyerberger 279 Report post Posted January 9, 2009 Didn't they initially give Peca a much bigger suspension for a much lighter touch? Go go gadget consistency!
12Newf 0 Report post Posted January 9, 2009 (edited) they had to suspend him, he even did the dirt kick motion haha. im just curious about what it was he did in montreal and what are these guys saying to create this belarussian rivalry? edit: i found out whats going on http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/2009/01/09/grabovsky_trouble/ "I think he is not Belarussian now, he is French because I never fight with Belarussian guys," Grabovski said. "I don't know why he wants to fight with me. If he wants to fight, we'll go in the street and every minute of every day I'll wait for him and we'll fight." Grabovski, who was born in Potsdam in the former East Germany but raised in Belarus, wouldn't get into details of why there is such bad blood between the two. But the Canadiens winger explained the reasons for the feud. "He talks too much in the Russian papers about me and my brother," Kostitsyn said of his elder brother and teammate Andrei. But Grabovski noted he only has a problem with the younger of the two brothers. "He's not smart, because the older Kostitsyn, Andrei, he never fights with me and he never will fight because he plays hockey, he plays the game," he said. "I think it's stupid." GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted January 9, 2009 He should have bitten the referee instead. Then he would have only been suspended 2 games.

Don Cherry sure looks strange, but I don't know if he's out of shape. Maybe back then. Wellwood got waived from Toronto. He's never played in Montreal. Slippery slope and then it becomes interpretation. Easier just to slam the door on it. And better to, too.
Rivalred 630 Report post Posted January 9, 2009 Got the suspension for that shove eh? Well, have to set an example and protect the ref's like others have said.

Electrophile 3,554 Report post Posted January 10, 2009 You can get suspended in baseball for putting your hands on an ump, so I don't see why people are bothered by a player getting suspened for manhandling a ref in the NHL. There needs to be lines in the sand (or ice, as it were) that players can't cross and this is one of them. You don't go after refs, you don't go after fans and you don't go after opposing coaches.
