The Detroit Red Wings' 6-4 win over the Chicago Blackhawks at Wrigley Field on New Year's Day attracted an average of 4.4 million U.S. viewers on NBC, the network said Monday. That's the most since a Philadelphia-New York Rangers game on Feb. 23, 1975, according to Nielsen Media Research.

BigTex 1 Report post Posted January 13, 2009 It was pure joy to watch the Wings play in the Winter Classic this year. Living in Austin and not even having cable it was a dream come true. Only other time I've seen them was driving up to Dallas last month. We definately need more hockey on broadcast TV.

stlwing14 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2009 Bettman's reaction to this piece of news: Wings vs Hawks sure do a lot better on TV than twelve games in a row of the Sabres and Pens playing a 2-1 game. Who knew? Answer: Everyone but NHL offices.
JayUp88 1 Report post Posted January 13, 2009 Bettman's reaction to this piece of news: For one I am pretty sure Bettman wasn't pissed that the winter classic drew great ratings. I know being on this board means I should hate "most" everything but sorry no I don't. If Bettman hated us we wouldn't have been in the winter classic., we wouldn't be starting the league over sea's next year, etc.

Yep, too bad that the NHL isn't likely to look at these numbers and realize that Cindy & Co. wasn't the reason that the 2008 SCF rating were the highest since 2002 (gee, what team was in it that year?!?!?). I think he'd be frustrated because despiet all hsi efforts to make the sunbelt the face of the NHL, it's still the tried and true old school teams that keep the league afloat and it makes him look like an ass. So yeah, he's happy it did well from a business standpoint, but personally it's egg on his face.

If Bettman hated us we wouldn't have been in the winter classic., we wouldn't be starting the league over sea's next year, etc. Dude, it has nothing to do with Bettman and the Wings. It has everything to do with it being Bettman and NOT Pittsburgh. And its true. Bettman probably did shake his head at the news that this game outdrew the game featuring the NHL's pet franchise. Just another indicator that all the time and effort that goes into marketing Crosby and the Pens would be better spent disrupted amongst key teams. The Chicago Blackhawks being one of them. cusimano_brothers 1,655 Report post Posted January 14, 2009 I'm not sure where the figures are buried, but after every bill was paid after last season's WC in Buffalo, the League made off with a load of cash (not the League needs it). The ratings-increase news is better off for the League; a staffer may have to explain to Bettman that this "tradeoff" is good.
