4 on 4.

Man. Oh boy. Do we suck the high hard one playing 4 on 4. I've come to the conclusion that the Wings play their 5 on 5 system so well and know that system so inside and out that they are absolutely confounded, bamboozled, dunderflucked and perplexed when it's 4 on 4. They look lost. They start and stop, they point and turn, their eyes look like those of a deer caught in the headlights of a mac truck bearing down on them at 80mph.

Three easy steps to fix this quagmire:

1. ******* practice it Babs.

2. Play sets of guys who know each other real well and can SKATE. Pav with Z, Flip with Hudler, and I guess Mule with Hossa, not so fast Homer, take a seat here. Leave Draper and Maltby on the bench with Homer. We gotta start with Pav and Z, then go to them every other shift and rotate the other guys in-between. Those two have best chemistry since Pinky and the Brain, Whitaker and Trammel, and Hall and Oates. WHY DOES HE HATE PLAYING THEM TOGETHER??????

3. Let the intern print this message off and shove it in Babs' corn flakes tomorrow morning so he knows how pissed we are at losing to the Turdco.

While this may be the the spawn of an overreaction to a mundane season loss, it is a valid point. The Wings are just not good four aside. I don't know what it is that makes their mastery of playing the game at full strength turn around and become ineffective when you subtract a skater, but their system or style or mentality is obviously tailored to having three forwards up and not two.

I can agree that shortening the bench in these situations is probably a step in the right direction. Fourth liners should see zero four on four time, and poor or average skaters like Homer and Sammy should be kept off the ice if possible as well.

I can see a reason for not playing them together on the 5 on 5. They're both great in the face-off circle and having one as a winger would be a bit of a waste.

I'd love to see them together on the 4 on 4 though, and I don't know why Babcock doesn't make that happen.

And it would feel weird to go into the playoffs this year with the HDZ-line broken up.. they were so damn good last year.

Maybe it's all part of his master plan. He wants the other teams to THINK he won't use them together and then come playoff time they're woefully inept to stop the carnage that HDZ or even H-D will wreak upon unprepared defenses and goalies!!!! Muhwahahahaaaa!

Well he is a psychology major for pete's sake, there is a chance he's using some psychoBABle on them right?

psychoBABle? Funny. :D

And I wouldn't fret too much. I understand the frustration of losing a game partially you were dominating early as well as a very entertaining game regardless if you were a fan of either team or neutral, but so little 4 on 4 is played in the playoffs, and not every game is going to go into overtime in the regular season, that this wouldn't be incredibly high up on my radar of worry.

So far, it seems about 1/3 of the games this season have gone into overtime. And with the 4 on 4 play that occurs during a game, it would be nice to have the odds that someone is going to score be in our favor, not the other teams. So yes, it should be addressed.

If they played 5 on 5 for 60 min you wouldn't have to worry about 4 on 4 in OT. I thinnk if the NHL would just go to a 2 points for a win, none for a lose may be teams would play a little harder towards the end of the game.

The 4 on 3 PP to start the overtime didn't look that organized either...I don't know how many shots they had but it didn't look like their scoring oppertunities were equal to the skill and strategy advantage they possess.

At least they are finding these things out in Jan and not May.

True, true... You're not going to win many games when you let the other team pepper your goallie with 49 friggin' shots! They were darn lucky to be winning late in the 3rd last night with those stats.
