MacK_Attack 108 Report post Posted January 17, 2009 TO PIT: Mathieu Garon TO EDM: Dany Sabourin, Ryan Stone, 2011 4th round pick http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/2009/01/17/garon_trade/
cnot19 191 Report post Posted January 17, 2009 Garon is a pretty good goalie and Sabourin hasnt impressed me.
edicius 3,269 Report post Posted January 17, 2009 Hmm. Odd. Their records are almost identical, but Garon's stats are worse than Sabourin's. Doesn't even make sense for the Pens salary-wise either. Garon: 6-8-0, 3.17 GAA, .895 SV% ($1,100,000, pending UFA) Sabourin: 6-8-2, 2.85 GAA, .898 SV% ($512,500, pending UFA)
The Mule 0 Report post Posted January 17, 2009 This trade will not make either team better.
Donaldjr2448 43 Report post Posted January 17, 2009 The only thing I can think of is that Edmonton got a 4th round pick! Other wise this is a nothing move for either team.
Ms_Hockey 0 Report post Posted January 17, 2009 What happened to the Pens this season? I'm kind of surprised at their current standings.
akustyk 84 Report post Posted January 17, 2009 I happen to think Garon is an average goalie but with big upside. and for some reason I can imagine him pulling a Roloson this year and playing outstanding playoffs. all in all this isn't a very important trade
MacK_Attack 108 Report post Posted January 17, 2009 What happened to the Pens this season? I'm kind of surprised at their current standings. They lost Hossa, Malone, Roberts, Conklin, Laraque & Ruutu. Not to mention Whitney missing nearly half the season and Gonchar still not back. Hard to recoup that kind of depth when you have cap issues.
therock48880 14 Report post Posted January 17, 2009 (edited) What a year for Shero. He loses guys like Laraque, Ruutu, Roberts, Malone, Hossa, and Conklin and replaces them with guys like Satan, Fedotenko, Cooke, and Goddard. Since Conklin wasn't needed there, they now have to trade two prospects and a pick for a 3-5 month rental of a backup goalie who makes more money. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that they are also capped out. Edited January 17, 2009 by therock48880
YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted January 17, 2009 I'm betting Shero thinks hes got another Conklin in Garon, which he very well might. But this isn't going to help them substantially in any way. And if Edmonton isn't gunning for the playoffs, why not grab a 4th round pick?

Ms_Hockey 0 Report post Posted January 18, 2009 They lost Hossa, Malone, Roberts, Conklin, Laraque & Ruutu. Not to mention Whitney missing nearly half the season and Gonchar still not back. Hard to recoup that kind of depth when you have cap issues. I wouldn't think Conklin would make that much of an impact on their standings. Roberts, yes. Ruutu, yes. Hossa, definitely. I realized they would fall, I guess I didn't realize how much.

dat's sick 1,002 Report post Posted January 18, 2009 The band on deck keeps playing as this ship keeps sinking. I can't wait for the glorious day I read the headline "Therrien Fired". There is not a coach in the league that I despise more than Therrien. Even when the Pens win it feels like he does nothing but whine and moan. I don't blame the players for not listening to him anymore. If the Pens hadn't just recently signed him to a new contract he'd probably be gone already. Hockeytown0001 7,652 Report post Posted January 19, 2009 That pretty much sums up what the Pen's board is thinking right now.

I'll be quite happy for the Pens and their fans the day that happens. But only if Yeo goes with him.

Also I have a good friend who is a Pens fan (I know , I know.. dropped on his head as a child I assume) and he says that even the biggest Therrien supporters are ready for him to get the axe asap. I am thinking more than a few of the players are feeling the same way.
cusimano_brothers 1,655 Report post Posted January 22, 2009 From January 20, 2009: "Newly-acquired goaltender Dany Sabourin was placed on waivers today". Something to do with his big salary. I don't see anything about him being claimed from Edmonton.
