Mike 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2009 Babcock represents our team, but that doesn't really count. This is really good news. Right now the best thing for the Wings is rest, not some meaningless all-star game.

Kira 451 Report post Posted January 21, 2009 Good. Now I can do something else on Sunday afternoon. Like read, walk my dogs, take a nap, cook a nice dinner...my hubby won't know what to do with me not watching hockey for a week.
VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted January 21, 2009 I'm glad they can get their rest, and I don't really care about the ASG, but damn, the Stanley Cup winning team, one of the most dominant teams in recent pro sports, doesn't have a single player going? Laughable.

Kira 451 Report post Posted January 21, 2009 I would say it's perfect that the guys are skipping this farce in favor of time to be with their families. Good on you both! It just shows how much of a joke this whole thing is. How much do you want to bet that if they asked any of the other Wings to go, they said no?
puckloo39 5,686 Report post Posted January 21, 2009 This is great. Sadly, there are plenty of fans who won't get the message -- the Cup champions have no interest in attending this farce Bettman passes off as an all-star showing of talent. Works for me. Have a nice break, guys!!

Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted January 21, 2009 Lidstrom not in the all star game seems weird, but I'm glad there staying home. It's just a big joke, Babcock should tell the league his back is sore or something and get to stay home
Yzersyukstromberg 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2009 According to an article posted on NHL.com today, both Pavel Datsyuk and Nicklas Lidstrom of our Red Wings will miss this weekend's All Star Game in Montreal, due to injuries. We all know about Datsyuk's injury (hip flexor) that occured last night in Phoenix, but Lidstrom's injury is something I didn't expect. Personally, I'm glad to see that our players will be making the smart choice and taking a week's rest at the mid-season break, rather than participating the Ducks/Hawks vs. Habs/Pens 'All Star' Game. Neither of these players has anything to prove, and considering the fact that priority #1 remains a Stanley Cup repeat, the rest will do them some good. Their replacements are Patrick Marleau (SJ) and Stephane Robidas (DAL).

Never_Retire_Steve 35 Report post Posted January 21, 2009 Just reading the responses of this thread make me sad at how poor the all-star game is viewed and how mad I am at the NHL brass and how they run the league. /mini rant
Zion 93 Report post Posted January 21, 2009 wow that sucks.. really wanted to see them in it. You're kidding, right? The All-Star Game is absolute s***e, and (as mentioned before) the SuperSkills Competition has been watered down to pure idiocy. This is the BEST thing that could have happened... I remember Malts saying he took his family to the Caribbean one year during the All-Star break. I love that Nick and Pavel will get rest along with the rest of the team. I was watching a stat the other night, and I had forgotten how badly the Cup champs (and SCF loser) had fared the year after, and this is a good thing that Detroit is not represented. When the ratings come out, Bettman might (keyword: might) get a clue.
GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted January 21, 2009 I don't know what the hell everyone is so excited about? The All-Star game has become a joke, but I'd still love to see Wings players in it, because I think that would make it more entertaining for me as a fan and for the league in general. Also, Montreal is a better place to have the ASG than in some s***ty Southern city where they can't even spell hockey. How this is good for the Wings or for anyone on LGW is beyond me. wingfan1991 221 Report post Posted January 21, 2009 how is the all star game s***? its the best players getting together and having fun for a day or two. whats the big deal.. like they strain themselves playing in it? if they are "healthy" they should GO.. f*** the time off and s***. its a fun time nuff said. the cup aint going nowhere, you guys and this rest crap kill me! Zion 93 Report post Posted January 21, 2009 Rest = good. Stanley Cup hangover = bad. Any time off is GOOD time off. The Stanley Cup is the only thing that matters, and it's a LONG season. Instead of flying from Phoenix to Montreal and dealing with the press, NHL brass and the public, each and every Detroit Red Wing is flying to Detroit and going HOME. A week off. How you fail to see that this is good for the team is beyond ME.
Guest mindfly Report post Posted January 21, 2009 Maltby will go to bahamas, homer and friends will go to vegas, meech back to his house outside of winnipeg and osgood will be home.. it's unknown what the rest will do
Never_Retire_Steve 35 Report post Posted January 21, 2009 The problem with this game is that it's NOT the best players in the league. If it was, I would have way more interest in watching it. Although, I will admit that it does suck not having your team represented.
Yak19 303 Report post Posted January 21, 2009 (edited) Awesome News! Rest Up and enjoy the well deserved time off boys. Lol at Robidas as the replacement, um Rafalski, Zata, Hossa? If they did get picked i wouldn't want them to go but this just further proves the NHL/Bettman biased against the Red Wings. The All-Star game can best be summed up by an old Simpson's quote: "SEND IN THE CLOWWWWNS" Edited January 21, 2009 by Yak19
96warrior 11 Report post Posted January 21, 2009 Elbow? Posted by George James Malik January 21, 2009 16:17PM From the Free Press's Helene St. James: January 21, Detroit Free Press: I just now got home from Phoenix, so let me clarify what's going on regarding the Red Wings and Sunday's All-Star Game: Neither Pavel Datsyuk nor Nicklas Lidstrom are going. Datsyuk is nursing a hip flexor. As of last night after the game, Mike Babcock said he didn't know whether it would prevent Datsyuk from appearing in his third All-Star Game, but by this morning, Datsyuk had cancelled. Datsyuk left midway through the third period of Tuesday's 6-3 loss at Phoenix. Lidstrom's injury is, per spokesman John Hahn, "suffering from elbow problems." Lidstrom finished last night's game. toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted January 21, 2009 I didn't think you were able to skip the game due to injury unless you actually miss time before or after the game (i.e. Lidstrom did not and pressumably he won't after either).

Anyway, Rafalski is one of the league leaders in points for defensemen, and he wasn't picked. That was more bizzarre than Hossa or Hank not making it in. Never_Retire_Steve 35 Report post Posted January 21, 2009 I find it really bizarre that they need representation from every team but when two guys can't go then they replace them with guys from other teams! LOL
akustyk 84 Report post Posted January 21, 2009 just who the * will notice. all the broadcast will be anyway focused on showing Sindy Crosby and no one will ever care. Stanley Cup champions? oh yeah... just as casual dump fan knew anyone outside Gary's blessed Penguins I mean... honestly... it's great news that our players have some rest instead of participating in this meaningless game. and the only player NHL and TV care is Sindy so nobody will really cry after Dats or Nick. they still have their candy poster boy to kiss ass...
