lets go pavel 2 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 Too bad they had to be suspended but it is part or their job and like jay said they are not thinking of the fans or their team oh well.... true i hate bettman but you can not blame him for this it is on dats and lids. They are HURT. Maybe not so much that they can't tough it out during a real game (although Pavel missed part of the last one), but certainly enough to warrant skipping a meaningless game. I understand the NHL doesn't want players faking injuries to skip the ASG, hence the miss-one-game rule, but that doesn't take into account players willing to play through injuries for the benefit of their teams (and the NHL). I understand they don't have to play in the ASG, just do the meet-and-greet stuff, but since when is that required of injured players? In years past, have all of the injured players still been required to attend? I've never heard of that before.

They are thinking of their fans and their team. The fans and the team want a Stanley Cup, not an All-Star game appearance. A week off will do them both good and keep them healthier longer for a nice long Cup run. Anyone who would trade an All-Star game appearance for a Stanley Cup is a moron. lets go pavel 2 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 I still don't think they'll be suspended. They just have to play out the injuries, and not play the first game back. Then, no suspension. The whole "not play the first game back" would be the suspension ...

FinRedWing 172 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 (edited) Wow. That's bulls***. Wonder if a suspension will affect Dats and the Lady Byng. Seriously. Just read on TSN, of course, that Crosby's en route to the ASG as we speak, so no suspension for the league's golden boy. The NHLPA's going to have a field day with this. I think Dats' 14 PIM (so far) will affect his Lady Byng chances more than this. And regarding NHLPA... NHLPA executive director Paul Kelly said he expects the league to discipline the two players by having them sit out Tuesday against Columbus. "Yeah, they have the ability to do and they have done it," Kelly said. "They're trying to strike the balance because their view is if you can't skate for a legitimate reason, then you ought to come and participate in all of the events because it's important for the sport." Last season, Kelly said, Martin Brodeur sat out the first game after the break because he missed the All-Star game in Atlanta. As long as the players are still paid, Kelly said, the disciplinary action is allowed. Kelly said Colin Campbell and Detroit GM Ken Holland have had a discussion about Lidstrom and Datsyuk missing All-Star weekend, and the result isn't good for the Red Wings. "There is a strong likelihood they would not be able to play the first game back," Kelly said. Edited January 23, 2009 by FinRedWing

BULLs***!!! Come'on duck guy, players bail on this every year, no one that I have ever heard of got suspended a game because of it. I asked the question earlier, didn't Ralf go last year because of Personnal reasons for another player? How did Neids end up their, because people backed out. Whether the injury is 3 weeks, 3 days, or 3 minutes before the game, these players have a responsibility to their team. If Dats or Lids feel they can not go at 100% and don't want to go to shake a bunch of hands it is their right. What if a guy gets in a car accident on his way to Montreal, the hospital won't let him leave, yet he is cleared to play the next day, is he suspend able after the ASG too? NOWHERE in the CBA does it say attendance is mandatory, Bettman is suspending them based off of an understanding! Lets take a look at Dats, he didn't finish last game due to injury, yet he is suspended for the game he gets back??? What the F**K is that. He missed time in his last game due to injury. It is not like all of the sudden this popped up like Lids.

lets go pavel 2 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 sure they are hurt... but they cant show up for off ice stuff? They did not have to play in the game... Has this always been a rule at the ASG? In years past, have the injured players still been threatened with suspensions if they didn't attend the off-ice stuff? If so, I will agree with you 100%, but I don't remember anything like this in the past.
Bluedevils_13 0 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 Seriously, I have never been so disgusted as a fan. I was traveling all the way from Toledo to Columbus and taking my girflriend to her first wings game, anticipating on showing her players like Lids, and Dats. Now what Gary? You HAD to suspend them huh? Couldn't just give them a fine, but this is what he HAD to do. My ass.

egroen 384 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 At least we have more confirmation Crosby is a saint: http://www.torontosun.com/sports/hockey/20...121281-sun.html January 23, Ottawa Sun: "For any player who is selected to be on the team and can't be here, I know it's disappointing for everybody, particularly the fans," said [NHL commissioner Gary] Bettman. "It's not unusual, if you go back over time, for players to sustain injuries and be unavailable. What we don't expect is injuries just last weekend." After missing last Friday's game with what's believed to be the knee injury, the talk out of Pittsburgh is Crosby was advised to rest this weekend, in preparation for the club's final 34 games. "I know this is disappointing to him, but we would never ask a player to go against doctor's orders," said Penguins GM Ray Shero. But after missing last year's all-star game with a high ankle sprain, Crosby wanted to be here and the word is he couldn't have sustained more damage to the knee. "Probably the guy who would love to be here the most is Crosby," said NHLPA director of player affairs Glenn Healy. "I talked to Crosby a month ago about this breakaway challenge (in the skills competition) and he was working on a move or two. He said to me, 'Do you need my address so you can send the crystal trophy to me.' ... "Physically, if you're banged up, you can't take part," said Healy. "(But) there's nobody more competitive than (Crosby), even in a situation that isn't competitive. He'd want to be to show why he's one of the best in the world." I want to barf. Guest micah Report post Posted January 23, 2009 They should play by the rules - why would we be upset if they have to miss a game for missing the All Star game? The league would look like more of a joke if they opted not to suspend them. If they are hurt, they shouldn't be playing, All Star games or otherwise. If they are healthy, they should be. Playing in the All star game is an unfortunate side affect of being in a carreer where you are among the best at what you do and making Brazilions of dollars. so they have to play in one powderpuff exhibition game a year, is that so bad? Andy Pred 48 337 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 Just when the NHL seems to be getting its act together, along comes the poisoned dwarf to put it down again. If it wasn't bad enough by the way the ASG teams were selected, this rule really does beggar belief. To really piss the dwarf off I wish Babs would 'ring in sick' tonight as well.
