tweekvp 0 Report post Posted January 24, 2009 NPR audio Most people will not agree with everything said but it is nice to hear for hockey fans. The commentator basically describes how hockey has come back from the lockout to be a top 4 sport again. I guess I did not realize this years winter classic had higher ratings than any of the bowl games that day.

LeftWinger 5,153 Report post Posted January 24, 2009 (edited) ...maybe if the NHL rid itself of Bettman, it could break into the top 3! I suppose the Wings had nothing to do with the ratings did they? Now next year they'll have Columbus play Minnesota or Phoenix play St. Louis in Fargo, ND. That'll beat the Rose Bowl! The Winter Classic was held in a city where there was a "home team". The Wings playing surely boosted the ratings.

I guess I did not realize this years winter classic had higher ratings than any of the bowl games that day. As much as we complain here about the state of hockey, generally speaking, it isn't going away any time soon. It's never going to come close to being as popular as baseball or football here, but I'm fine with that. It's not my job to promote the NHL to people and convert them down here where it is especially less popular. And I'm not comparing it or trying to make it as popular or "good" as baseball or basketball or football in terms of general popularity. There's little/no point to that. The sport isn't going away soon, I enjoy watching it even if I don't live in an area where it is as popular, that's more than fine for me.

tweekvp 0 Report post Posted January 24, 2009 I think it was a combination of good ratings for the game and some very lopsided bowl games that day. Either way I was happy to hear it.
Ms_Hockey 0 Report post Posted January 25, 2009 (edited) Wait... were the ratings THAT good? The ratings increased by 12% from last year. It was the best overnight regular season rating in almost 13 years. Edited January 25, 2009 by Ms_Hockey
Guest Shoreline Report post Posted January 25, 2009 I'll just comment directly on the things said in the audio piece. The couple comments the guy made about "strike" (nope) and never becoming a more watched league than the NBA made me cringe, as it's already been there before. However, it's good to hear about the NHL doing better financially and popularity-wise. I'm sure a few folks would hate how they pointed out that Sidney and Alex are the two more/most marketable NHL players especially since coming from the lockout. b.shanafan14 733 Report post Posted January 25, 2009 I knew the ratings were good, but I didn't know they were that good. I stand corrected on thinking that the Winter Classic couldn't compete with college bowl games.
softshoes 83 Report post Posted January 25, 2009 The Winter Classic is great but c'mon folks this is Bettman were talking about here. The mere fact that having the Rose Bowl for a venue even made into print proves that he will screw it up....somehow....he will figure out a way to kill it. Bettman will probably move the game to Europe. That way it can air at 2 a.m on a Monday morning or something here in the United States.

ShanahanMan 473 Report post Posted January 25, 2009 Don't worry, just wait until the league bans fighting, then the ratings will drop again.
