Octopi Flinging @ The Joe

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

My brother and I are attending quite a few Red Wings games the remander of the season, and he wants to take an Octopus to the San Jose game and throw it on the ice with less than 5 minutes left. He works at a meat market and can get one for cheap

He was wondering however what the ramifications were for those of you that have thrown one before at the Joe?

Obviously if he gets thrown out with less than 5 minutes left he isn't concerned...but has anyone ever been given a ticket or banned or anything like that?

Please share your stories you Octopi flingers so he knows what to do.

Thanks!

Can I give you a piece of advice??? Save it for the Finals, when Gary Buttman has to deliver the Cup into the hands of Captain Nick. Then you throw it and hit that douchebag in the side of the head. You will be the hero of every Wings fan in that arena.

If he absolutely must do it at this game, get the crowd around you in on it. They can't kick you out, if you're not caught. This is why most octopi are flung after a goal. 1. Stoppage in play. 2. Everyone is up and cheering, they won't be able to spot who threw it.

But i do like Kira's idea better. Save up and save it for the finals when we are handed the cup again, then take your best shot at the idiot on the ice.

It's a playoffs tradition. It loses its aura if it's thrown in the middle of the regular season. I say you buy yourself some tickets to the first round.

Agreed!

It doesn't really have the impact during the season that it does in the playoffs. I still say save it for the finals, and then hit Buttman with it. That would be a pretty awesome sight in high def.

i understand the playoff tradition trust me.

we don't get to go to many games but we were able to get the 9 dollar tickets to this game (we are both in college so we're not made of money and going to any playoff games)

he just has the opportunity to get one cheap from his work...and figured he'd run down the stairs with under 5 to go during a stoppage and play and give it a hurl.

hes not concerned about getting thrown out...no big deal...but he doesnt want to get a ticket or be put in the Det jail for a night

I seriously doubt you'll get thrown in jail for it, but you will most likely be escorted out of the arena.

If you insist on throwing it at the San Jose game, would you do me a favor??? Throw it at Joe Thornton and don't miss. You'll earn the eternal gratitude of one of my best friends, who hates him with a purple passion and has since his days in Boston.

Better yet, if Roenick is back, heave it at him and be accurate.

It is considered proper octiquette to aim for a part of the ice where there are no players. It is done as a show of support for the Wings, not as a weapon of messy destruction. Don't aim it at people. Turtles and lawyers are fine.

I never liked him...ever. It's a personal thing.

"Turtles and lawyers", eh? Well, Lemieux would qualify as a turtle in my book. Look out, Claude!

It is considered bad luck to do this in the regular season. Now if you're going to do it in the playoffs this is how it should be done. My brother and I both did it in kast years playoffs a couple times. The rule at the Joe is that they have to kick you out, but they dont, depending on what section you throw it from. The corner to the right of where karen Newman sings is a good spot....the Other end of the ice isnt a good idea because most of the wings alumni and what not have seats in these areas and security is very strict. We just put the octopi in a large freezer ziplock bag and stuffed it in our pockets while coming into the Joe. They dont even say anything if you have it. My brother got searched, took out the opctopus and they let him through anyways. You cannot throw it during play, or they will throw you out. The best bet is to chat it up with one of the ushers, get to know them, and then pick your time of glory. Not going to lie, its pretty fun. I threw mine right after the big scrum in game 2 of the Cup finals last year and it was AWESOME

It's just a personal thing, I never liked him. I never liked Gretzky or Roy either. I also hate Claude Lemieux and Chris Pronger. It's just a personal thing, don't take it so seriously. It's not like I said I hated you, you know?

I threw an octopus at the end of the National Anthem in games 2 and 5 of the Finals in '08. I didn't get tossed out of either game, as I was lucky enough to be standing next to John Ogrodnick in the standing room area as I waited for my opportunity to run down the stairs and deposit my octopus onto the ice. Good old Johnny told me that if I had any problems with security, to just tell them I was with him...what a laugh!

One thing I might suggest....as has already been mentioned above....the octopus is NOT for the regular season. This is a playoff tradition, and in my opinion, it's kind of bad luck to be tossing octopi on the ice during the regular season. If there's any time where you might get kicked out of the Joe, the regular season might be it.

If you absolutely feel the need to do it though, try to keep a couple things in mind.

-WASH IT, THOROUGHLY!!! If you don't, it's a ***** for them to clean up off of the ice. Either way, Al's not going to swing it during the regular season, so that doesn't apply, but if it's wet and sloppy, you're going to give everyone around you a nice sloppy mess in their hair when you throw it, and that's not going to help your chances of staying in the arena.

-Throw it during a stoppage in play, preferrably after a goal....but the best time is at the end of the anthem.

-Throw it away from any players, refs of staff on the ice. If you throw it near anyone, you're getting tossed.

Hope this helps. Like I said, I wouldn't bother throwing one if I was you....but if you feel the need, I wish you well!

Go Wings!
